Not tonight
Not tonight
Solan’s POV
“Do you think Dad has been odd lately?” Amari mutters, putting her hair up in a bun.
My curtains dance as cool breeze blows in through the open windows.
“I don't think so, they're just trying to remain strong and fit so they can protect the pack.” Jace mutters, throwing a tiny ball against the wall and catching it when it bounces back.
I wonder if his back doesn't hurt from lying so long on the hard floor.
Amari shakes her head. “Dad's not been at breakfast for a week. That's unusual.” She says.
“You think there's a problem?” I ask.
Jace shoots up in an instant. “Like a rogue attack?” He asks, his eyes wide in amazement.
“I'd never understand why the thought of fighting gets you excited.” Amari snorts, heading to my wardrobe.
I don't stop her when she pulls out my T-shirt.
“That's when all the cool stuff happens.” Jace says, rising to his feet and joining me on the bed.
“You think people dying is cool?” I ask, with a frown.
“Of course not. You know that's not what I meant!” He yells, throwing his ball at me.
Just to piss him off, I catch it in one arm before squeezing down until it bursts.
“Solan!” Jace screams, his eyes widening in shock as he snatches it from my hand.
My brows furrow when his furious gaze turns to sorrow as he glances at the ruined toy in his hands.
“Why did you do that?” He whispers brokenly. “Why'd you crush it?!” He yells, throwing a punch at my chest.
I stare at him, wondering if I should feign pain just so he won't feel too bad.
“Can you stop that?” I snap, hitting his hand off when he starts throwing stuff at me.
“You are so impossible. Always acting like you’re the king of the world?”
My jaw tightens as I notice actual pain in his tone.
“It's just a ball. I'll get you another one.” I say, not understanding why he's being so emotional.
“You can keep your fu…”
“Language, Jace.” Amari sharply cuts in. “Both of you need to chill, it’s too late for this.”
“He thinks he’s already Alpha,” Jace mutters.
“I don’t think that,” I growl. “I already told you I'll get you another one. It's not my fault you chose to be a pup about it.”
“You can't get me another one.” He hisses.
“Of course I can.”
“No you can't because Alpha Aul got that for me before he left for Darkwaters. And I've had it for years.”
“Well, I guess you just have to suck it up then.” I say with a frown.
“You're a jerk. The worst friend ever.” He grumbles jumping off the bed.
“Please guys,” Amari groans. “Not tonight.”
I rise to my feet. “You need to learn not to say a lot of crap when you're upset.” I seethe, feeling upset that his words actually hurt me.
“It's only crap if I don't mean it. Tell me, what day has gone by without you trying to lord it over everyone else? I was only voicing out my opinion but no, you'd rather ruin my mood.”
“You should never have tossed the ball at me.”
“You're really a sadist like the boys say.”
“Don't say that!” I growl, my voice sounding rougher. Jace steps back, his breathing growing heavy as his gaze flickers between my eyes.
At first the heat is just in my heart but in the blink of an eye it spreads through my veins, filling me completely with boiling anger.
The urge to see Jace crumble suddenly grows strong.
His eyes widen as my aura flares. With tears in his eyes, he tries to resist but fails, his legs wobbling a few seconds before he falls on his knees, panting.
“Solan!” Amari hisses, and dear goddess I know I'm hurting my friend but I suddenly forget how to be calm.
“Stop it!” She yells, grabbing my arm.
Your wolf is subject to you.
I close my fists, mentally begging my wolf to stop.
The moment my aura retreats, I gasp, my chest heaving from the strain of holding back.
Jace stares at the floor, his face completely red as his shoulders fall in shame.
“I didn't mean it,” I whisper.
“You didn’t have to,” he snaps, his voice shaking as he shoves past Amari and storms toward the door.
“Jace…” she calls, but he ignores her, slamming the door behind him.
I rake a hand through my hair. “He’s overreacting.”
Amari crosses her arms. “No, you knew exactly what you were doing. You shouldn't use your aura on your friend. That's humiliating… reminding him of his weaker wolf.”
“Why are you being so serious about it. It's Jace. He'll get over it.” I mutter, falling back in bed.
“Even if he will, I'm only saying you should show him some level of respect.” She says.
“He pushed me to it.” I grit out.
Amari shakes her head, rubbing my shirt on her neck, as she refuses to argue further.
“With how long you've had that shirt on, I'm pretty sure my scent will stick for days.” I say to Amari.
“A few more minutes and I'll be good.” She says.
“You know dad and mom don't care about how you scent right. Even if you don't smell like us, they'll still cherish you.”
Amari sighs, “Yes but I need to smell like you guys if I want to avoid silly questions from the pack.“
An hour crawls by and I run a hand through my hair, pacing the room. My eyes drift to the door again.
“He's not going to make up first this time.” She mumbles, giving me a side glance.
Unable to hold back longer, I grab my jacket.
“Where are you going?” She asks, though she knows the answer.
“To get him.” I say, marching out of my room and heading to the one place I know he'll be at.
The woods are cold and dark and Jace is really stupid.
I move fast, following the secret trail only the three of us know.
“Jace!” I call, careful not to be too loud so as not to alert any guard. “Come on, you've been out here forever.”
I'm greeted with silence so I move further down, my face pulling into a frown cause this is way too close to the border already.
“Jace!” I shout again, sharper this time.
Still nothing.
But just then, I see him, sitting on a large rock.
“It’s been over an hour,” I say quietly.
Jace looks away.
I step closer. “And you’re freaking close to the border. Did dad's warning go over your head?”
He still doesn't respond.
“Your dad will start looking for you soon,” I add. “So get up, let’s go back.”
He finally glances at me. His eyes are so red, his cheeks wet with tears.
I sigh, rubbing the back of my neck. “If I have to, I’ll carry you. Don’t test me.”
“Leave me alone.” His mutters angrily.
“Jace…” I frown.
“I said leave me alone!”
