MIRABEL’S PARANOIA AND EUDORA’S CONTROL
The moon hung high and full, casting an eerie glow over the towering fortress that housed the rulers of the Northern Pack. Inside Mirabel’s private chambers, the air was thick with the scent of burning incense, a desperate attempt to calm the storm raging within her.
The room was lavishly adorned with velvet drapes, golden candelabras, and an intricately woven rug beneath her feet, a reflection of Mirabel’s desperate grip on power. The massive four-poster bed, draped in crimson silk, stood untouched, proof of her sleepless nights. And yet, Mirabel wasn’t in bed.
She stood before a large, gilded mirror; her gaze was sharp, almost wild, as she studied her own reflection. Dark circles rimmed her usually striking golden eyes, a stark contrast to the porcelain perfection of her face. Her long, dark curls, which she normally wore in intricate braids adorned with silver pins, were now loose and tangled, spilling over her shoulders like an unruly storm.
She was unravelling. She wore a flowing midnight-blue gown with silver embroidery that clung to her, but no amount of luxury could mask the unease that had settled in her bones. Someone was working against her.
She paced across the room, the soft padding of her bare feet against the cold marble floor the only sound aside from her ragged breathing. She could feel the whispers in the halls, the shadows lurking in corners. Her people feared her, yet fear alone wasn’t enough to keep them loyal and then there was Kaelen, the man who married her yet lurks after the mate he once rejected.
The very thought of him sent a violent shudder down her spine. He was planning something, she could feel it in her blood. She needed to act fast before he did. But just as she was about to call for her guards, the door creaked open.
A figure glided in, her movements were poised and deliberate. It was her mother, Eudora.
Mirabel’s mother was the epitome of grace and power; her every step was measured, and her every word sharpened like a dagger. Her long silver hair was styled into an intricate bun, not a strand out of place, unlike Mirabel’s dishevelled appearance. She was dressed in a deep burgundy robe lined with fur, she looked like the queen she had never been, yet had always been controlled from the shadows.
Eudora’s expression was unreadable, but Mirabel knew that look. The calculating gaze of a woman who always played the long game.
"You’re restless," Eudora murmured, shutting the door behind her with an almost delicate motion. Mirabel didn’t turn. "Something is happening." Her voice was tight and restrained, but Eudora heard the paranoia lurking beneath it.
Eudora approached with slow, measured steps. "You’re imagining things, don't you think so?"
Mirabel’s head snapped toward her, eyes blazing. "Don’t patronize me, mother." Eudora arched a brow, unbothered. "Then speak plainly." Mirabel’s fingers curled into fists at her sides. "Kaelen is moving. I don’t have proof yet, but I know he is."
Eudora let out a long, exasperated sigh, moving toward the small table where a bottle of spiced wine sat untouched. She poured herself a glass, her movements elegant, deliberate. "You’ve already won, Mirabel. You have the throne, the pack belongs to you. Why do you let the ghost of your weak husband haunt you?"
Mirabel’s lips curled into a snarl. "Because I know him, he won’t stop until he has what he believes is his."
Eudora took a slow sip of wine before setting the glass down with a soft clink. She studied her daughter, eyes sharp were unreadable. "Then crush him before he becomes a real threat. Keep ruling as you have, with an iron fist."
Mirabel laughed bitterly, pacing again. "And look where that has gotten me, my warriors are starving. My people whisper behind my back, they’re waiting for me to fail, Mother."
Eudora’s lips pressed into a thin line. "Fear is power, Mirabel. If they tremble in your presence, they will obey." Mirabel’s eyes flashed dangerously. "They don’t just fear me, Mother. They hate me now."
Eudora’s expression tightened, but Mirabel didn’t stop.
"I followed your advice and ruled exactly as you wanted me to." Her voice trembled, frustration spilling into every syllable. "And now, we are on the brink of collapse."
Eudora’s gaze darkened. "Then you have to be stronger, show them why you are the queen." Mirabel stepped closer, her heart pounding. "What if you were wrong?"
The words hung heavy in the air, thick with accusation. For the first time, Eudora stiffened. A flicker of uncertainty, maybe even guilt flashed in her cold silver eyes. Mirabel saw it and she pounced.
"You said this would work, that I needed to be ruthless and they would fall in line." She let out a harsh breath. "But they’re breaking, and I am losing them." Eudora’s jaw clenched. "You listen to me, girl. You are the Luna of this pack only because of me. Do not forget that."
Mirabel scoffed. "Believe me, Mother, I can never forget how you struggled to get me to this position, but I'm losing it, can't you see? I just feel we should go easy on them, a bit."
If only they knew that they weren’t alone, in the far corner of the chamber, hidden behind the heavy drapes, Selene remained still like a ghost, her breathing was shallow.
Her presence had gone unnoticed the moment Eudora entered, just as planned. She was dressed in a servant’s garb, her long raven-black hair tied back in a simple braid, she looked exactly like a maid, another shadow in the grand palace. But she was more than that. She was a spy and she was listening.
Every word, every crack in the alliance between mother and daughter, she absorbed it all, knowing that Daric and Kaelen would find this information invaluable. And then, without listening to her mother, Mirabel made her move.
She turned away, her breathing was heavy as she muttered. "I’m ordering an investigation." Eudora froze. Mirabel didn’t see it, but Selene did. The subtle tightening of Eudora’s fingers around the wine glass, the barely perceptible shift in her stance.
"An investigation?" Eudora’s voice was carefully controlled, but Mirabel wasn’t looking at her mother’s face to notice the flicker of alarm.
"Someone is stealing supplies from the pack; it isn't Daric because he is not here," Mirabel continued, voice sharp. "And I will not stop until I find out who." Selene bit the inside of her cheek to keep her breathing steady. This was it.
She had suspected someone within the palace was behind the missing resources. But now, watching Eudora’s barely concealed reaction, she knew the Queen Mother was involved. And if Mirabel found out…
Eudora’s mind raced, she had orchestrated the supply thefts to weaken Mirabel’s control, to hasten her inevitable downfall so she could take power for herself. But now her daughter was digging, she had to act quickly.
Eudora forced a smile, stepping closer. "You’re right, my dear." She reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of Mirabel’s hair behind her ear. "Do what you must."
Mirabel nodded, missing the way her mother’s eyes darkened.
Selene, however, saw everything, and as she silently slipped away, she knew one thing for certain: this war wasn’t just between Mirabel and Kaelen anymore. It was mother against daughter and perhaps, only one of them would survive.
