Chapter 36 THE FIRE THAT REMEMBERS
Chapter 36 THE FIRE THAT REMEMBERS
The valley did not stop shaking.
Even after Draxen’s shadow dissolved, the tremors crawled beneath the earth like worms searching for a way out. Taren staggered, clutching his burned hand against his chest. Arinya reached him before he fell.
“Taren let me see.”
“I’m fine,” he said through clenched teeth.
He wasn’t. The mark the crown left wasn’t a burn it moved, the dark shape pulsing beneath his skin like something alive. The blackened lines curled outward from the center, spreading veins of shadow up his wrist and toward his elbow.
“Taren, this isn’t just an injury,” Arinya whispered. “The crown tried to bind to you.”
He gave a rough, humorless laugh. “Then it has terrible taste.”
Arinya glared. “This is not the time to joke.”
“Then stop looking at me like I’m dying.” His voice softened. “I’m still here.”
She swallowed hard, nodding once. “We need to get you back. Veyra might know how to slow the spread.”
He shook his head. “Arinya. Look.”
She followed his gaze.
The Wraith Crown floated several feet above the ground, turning in slow, unnatural circles. The violet cracks across its surface widened like fractures in bone. Shadows seeped from within the mask, rising into the air and converging at the center of the Sanctum, forming a swirling tear in reality.
A rift.
“What… what is it doing?” Arinya whispered.
Taren’s jaw tightened. “Opening something.”
No awakening something.
Inside her own chest, the dragon’s heartbeat thundered hard enough to steal her breath.
Thump.
Thump.
THUMP.
The crown was calling to it.
Calling to him.
Arinya staggered. Pain lanced through her ribs like claws scraping her from inside.
Taren gripped her arm, holding her upright. “Arinya what’s happening?”
“It wants out,” she gasped. “The dragon. Draxen’s right the seal is breaking.”
She fell to her knees, clutching her chest.
Flames burst from her palms uncontrollably bright, white-hot, spiraling upward like shards of sunlight. The magic tore through the hall, scorching stone and rattling the ruins.
Taren knelt instantly beside her. “Breathe. Stay with me.”
But she couldn’t. Not while the dragon pushed against her bones.
Its voice raw and ancient echoed inside her mind.
Release me…
“No,” she hissed. “I am not your vessel. You don’t control me.”
The voice rumbled low.
You belong to me.
“No,” she screamed, sparks tearing at her skin. “I don’t”
The rift widened.
A gust of shadow-wind rushed through the hall, nearly knocking Taren back. The crown stopped spinning, turning toward Arinya like a predator scenting prey.
Taren pushed in front of her, sword raised even though his injured hand trembled violently.
“Stay back!” he shouted at the floating mask.
It didn’t listen.
It rushed toward him.
Arinya threw out her hands emberfire erupted in a massive explosion, slamming into the crown midair. The mask shrieked, spinning chaotically before slamming into a stone pillar and cracking it in half.
But the emberfire didn’t stop.
It kept pouring from her, raw and unshaped fire that felt too big for her human form.
Taren shielded his eyes. “Arinya control it!”
“I can’t!” she screamed. “It’s taking over”
Her voice broke as the flames coiled around her, spiraling up her arms like living serpents. The heat seared the air, melting the frost on the stones, burning away the shadows.
But the shadows fought back.
Streams of void magic poured from the rift, clashing with Arinya’s fire in a violent dance of dark and light. The force of it sent cracks racing across the floor.
The Sanctum trembled.
Taren grabbed her shoulders, pulling her back from the stream of power. “You need to close it! Before it pulls the dragon free!”
“I’m trying!” she cried.
But the dragon wasn’t listening.
It clawed inside her chest, trying to tear through her ribs, trying to burst out of the prison of her flesh.
Let me out, Sovereign.
The title cut through her like a blade.
“No!” she snarled. “I am not your puppet!”
The rift flared brighter, vomiting a wave of shadow so strong it slammed both of them into a wall. Taren’s head hit stone he collapsed, dazed.
Arinya forced herself to her feet.
The Wraith Crown lifted again.
It aimed for her.
It flew like a weapon.
She barely had time to react she threw up a shield of emberfire. The mask smashed into it, screaming in an unholy voice. The shield flickered, barely holding.
Arinya gritted her teeth. “Not today.”
She pushed back, fire surging from her hands in a violent burst. The crown was blasted across the room, crashing through another pillar and skidding along the cracked floor.
Silence fell.
Except for the heartbeat inside her.
And the heartbeat inside the rift.
A deeper one. A heavier one.
Boom.
Boom.
BOOM.
Taren staggered to his feet, leaning heavily on his sword. “Arinya… look.”
She did.
And she felt her blood freeze.
Inside the rift through the swirling shadow she saw a silhouette.
Massive. Winged. Bound in chains forged of ancient light.
The dragon.
Her dragon.
Its eyes opened blinding gold burning through the darkness.
And it saw her.
Arinya stumbled backward. “No. No. This isn’t this can’t be”
Taren reached for her, his voice raw and shaking. “Arinya listen to me whatever you do don’t answer it.”
The dragon’s voice thundered into her skull.
Sovereign…
Come to me.
Her fire pulsed.
The rift widened again.
The dragon strained against its chains, the sound a horrifying crack of metal and bone.
“You have to close it!” Taren shouted.
“If I get closer, it will break free,” she cried.
“If you don’t,” he countered, “Draxen will use whatever comes out of that rift to destroy the world.”
Arinya looked at him.
He was in pain his hand nearly blackened from the crown’s corruption, shadows crawling across his veins. And yet he stood between her and the dragon. Between her and danger.
He still chose her.
A tremor shook the Sanctum. Debris rained from the ceiling. The rift flickered.
If she hesitated another moment, the dragon would pull itself through.
Arinya took a step forward.
Taren grabbed her hand. “Arinya"
“I have to face it,” she whispered. “This is my burden.”
His grip tightened. “Not alone.”
She looked down at his injured hand.
The mark pulsed. A dark echo of her own fire.
Their powers. Opposites. But connected.
Maybe…
“Give me your hand,” she said.
“Arinya”
“Trust me.”
He did.
She intertwined her fingers with his. Fire and shadow touched. Pain seared through both of them but it didn’t destroy them.
It stabilized them.
Arinya raised her free hand toward the rift.
The dragon roared, shaking the valley.
“Listen to me,” Arinya whispered, voice trembling with fury and fear. “I am Arinya of the Ember Line. I am the Sovereign. And I command you”
She pressed her palm against the rift.
“Stay.”
A violent shockwave blasted outward, throwing rubble into the air. Arinya screamed as pure magic tore through her fire and void clashing inside her veins.
The dragon shrieked in rage.
Taren held her tighter, pulling her back from the brink.
The rift began to shrink.
Slowly.
Painfully.
The light dimmed.
The shadows recoiled.
The heartbeat faded.
The dragon was dragged down, back into its prison.
The last thing Arinya heard was its voice furious and echoing with betrayal.
This is not over.
The rift snapped shut.
Silence slammed into the hall.
Arinya collapsed. Taren caught her before she hit the floor, gathering her against him as embers fizzled across her skin.
He whispered her name like a prayer. “Arinya…”
She lifted her head weakly. “It’s done.”
But Taren didn’t look relieved.
He looked horrified.
“Arinya your eyes.”
Her breath hitched. “What about them?”
“They’re not ember-gold anymore,” he whispered.
She blinked hard. The world blurred… tinged with violet.
Violet.
Void-touched.
She touched her cheek and felt a burn beneath her skin.
A new mark.
A mark shaped l
ike a dragon’s chain.
The dragon had touched her back.
Not fully but enough.
“I’m so sorry,” Taren whispered, voice breaking.
Arinya stared at him, her voice trembling.
“Taren… something’s wrong. I can still hear him.”
She pressed a shaking hand to her chest.
“He’s awake.”
