Chapter 42 The Dream Guardian
Under the stone, beneath the swirling nebula of light, burnt raw emotion. It was a fire like Leela had never felt before—not when she shifted, not when she silenced the storm. This was human. This was wolf. This was them.
She reached for Fennigan, her hands trembling not with fear, but with need.
He met her halfway, crushing her mouth to his. This time, it wasn't just a kiss. It was pure energy transferring between two poles. The air in the room seemed to vanish, replaced by the crushing weight of the bond demanding to be sealed.
Fennigan lifted her easily, carrying her the few steps to the bed. He laid her down amidst the pillows, his body covering hers, shielding her, claiming her
.
When they finally came together, making love for the first time, it didn't feel like two separate people touching. It felt like the barriers of skin and bone had simply ceased to exist. It was one fluid connection, a circuit closing.
The swirling colors in her chest pulsed in time with their movements—pearl, emerald, sapphire, ruby—casting dancing lights across the ceiling. Every touch sent sparks through her nerves; every breath was shared. It was a fusion of souls that left them both shattered and rebuilt in the same moment.
Long after the fire in the hearth had died down to glowing embers, Leela lay tangled in the sheets, clinging to him. Her head rested on his chest, listening to the slow, powerful rhythm of his heart, which now beat in perfect sync with her own.
Fennigan’s arm was draped over her, holding her close, as if he were afraid she might turn back into mist. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the scent of wildflowers and clover.
"I have never," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion, "felt more complete."
Leela traced the line of his jaw with her finger, feeling the vibration of his voice. She thought back to the hammock, to the realization that he had been her shadow guardian all those years.
"It’s different now, isn't it?" she whispered. "No more glass walls. No more dreamwalking."
Fennigan tightened his hold on her, kissing her temple.
"No more distance," he agreed softly. "God, Leela... do you know how hard it was? Watching you in those dreams, protecting you from the dark, but never being able to touch you? Never being able to pull you out?"
He ran his hand down her arm, marveling at the solid, warm reality of her.
"The Moon Goddess kept assuring me. 'Wait for the fog,' she said. 'Wait until the mist rolls in, and you will find her in the physical world.'"
He rested his chin on the top of her head, letting out a long, contented sigh.
"I waited a lifetime for that fog," he whispered into her hair. "And she was right. I found you. Just like she promised I would."
"I'm glad I had to stop because of the fog," she snuggled in close.
"I'm glad I listened," Fennigan said, as he kissed her softly.
Leela closed her eyes, letting the swirling light of her stone warm them both. The nightmare was over. The Wolf who had protected her sleep was finally holding her while she was awake.
