Chapter 323 Damon's Experiments
Chapter 323 Damon's Experiments
The estate was transformed. Huge bonfires roared in the stone pits outside, casting flickering orange light against the ancient trees, while the great hall was filled with the low, thunderous rumble of Alpha voices. The fifteen Alphas who had stood by the Blackwoods during the crisis had returned, not as soldiers this time, but as kin, bringing gifts of furs, carved wood, and silver to honor the birth of Zephyr.
The celebration was loud and defiant. They knew that a gathering of this many Alphas was like a beacon to the High Council. The Council’s "observers" would see the spike in power on their sensors and come sniffing around, likely using the birth of an elemental heir as a polite guise to scout the estate.
They were counting on it.
Fennigan stood at the head of the hall with Zephyr cradled in his arm, the tiny babe sleeping soundly despite the noise. Leela sat beside him, looking every bit the Luna Queen, her eyes sharp and watchful.
The heavy oak doors groaned open, and a hush rippled through the room. Three Council representatives stepped in, dressed in their sterile, high-collared greys that looked like a stain against the warmth of the pack house.
"We heard a new life had joined the Blackwood line," the lead Councilor said, his voice smooth and cold. "The High Council sends its—"
He stopped mid-sentence. His eyes drifted to the side of the room where Jax stood protectively in front of a woman nursing a glass of cider.
It was Ginny. She wasn't pale, she wasn't dying, and she certainly wasn't a "failed experiment." She looked radiant, her skin glowing with health and her eyes reflecting a sharp, predatory spark that hadn't been there before. The Councilors looked absolutely buffaloed, their mouths tightening as they realized their "specimen" hadn't just survived—she had thrived and integrated.
But the real shock hit them like a physical blow when they looked toward the infirmary wing’s entrance.
Elias stood there, leaning casually against the doorframe, his arm draped comfortably around Sloane.
"Councilors," Fennigan rumbled, his voice vibrating through the floorboards. "You're just in time. We were just discussing the strength of family. I believe you recognize our lead medic and his wife?"
The lead Councilor’s face turned a sickly shade of grey. They had come to see a baby, but they found a fortress of people they thought they had broken.
"Damon's experiment's can't be allowed to remain out here. We have no idea what can happen..." the Councilor whispered, his eyes darting back to Ginny.
"My mate," Jax corrected, his voice a low, dangerous snarl as he stepped forward, his hand resting on Ginny’s waist. "Is home. And she’s a big part of this family. I’d suggest you take a very good look, so you can tell the rest of your Council exactly what happens when you try to take what belongs to a Blackwood."
Elias didn't look like a ghost. He looked like a man who had finally stopped running. He stood tall, his fingers laced with Sloane's, a glass of dark ale in his hand. He watched the Councilors with a cold, clinical detachment that made them visibly shiver.
"Elias?" Valerius gasped, his voice thin and reedy. "That's impossible. The report... the vehicle was incinerated. There were no survivors in the crash."
"Funny thing about reports, Valerius," Elias said, his voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel. "They’re only as accurate as the person writing them. And as it turns out, I’m much better at faking a death than you are at causing one."
The room grew heavy as the fifteen Alphas shifted closer, a wall of pure, muscle-bound power forming a semi-circle behind the Blackwood family. The Councilors were suddenly very aware that they were surrounded by the very "animals" they had tried to manipulate, led by a doctor they thought they had erased.
"You reported a car crash to the Board," Jax growled, stepping into the light, his hand resting firmly on Ginny’s shoulder. "You told the world he was gone so you could wash your hands of the 'mess' he left behind. But the Blackwoods don't leave their own in burning cars."
Ginny looked Valerius straight in the eye, her new wolf-glow flickering dangerously. "You tried to bury us both," she said, her voice steady and resonant. "But you forgot that we're seeds. We don't die in the dark; we grow."
Fennigan stood, the infant Zephyr shifted to his shoulder. The tiny baby let out a soft, huffing breath—a sound that, in the silence of the hall, sounded like a challenge.
"You came to see the 'specimen' and the 'heir'?" Fennigan rumbled, the floorboards vibrating with his Alpha command. "Well, take a good look. You see a doctor you thought you killed. You see a girl you thought you broke. And you see a new generation that will never know your name. Now, take your 'condolences' and get off my land before I decide that three dead Councilors make for a better report than one fake car crash."
The Councilors’ voices scraped against the stone walls of the Great Hall, their thin authority evaporating in the heat of fifteen Alphas' collective gaze. They tried to posture, clutching their high-collared robes as if they were armor.
"This is an affront to the Accords!" Valerius shrieked, his voice cracking. "Elias is a fugitive of a state-reported death! That girl is a biological asset! You cannot simply decide to ignore the laws of the High Council because you’ve had a child!"
Fennigan stepped forward, a mountain of dark, protective fury. He stood between the Councilors and everyone he loved, his shadow stretching long across the floor. "You dare try to intimidate me or anyone else I have invited into my home? After everything you’ve done? Haven't we shown you people what happens when you cross a Blackwood?"
Just then, the heavy side doors opened, and Veda, Thorpe, and Horne walked in. The three Elders moved with an ancient, terrifying grace.
"And you still have this laughable 'Elder Council' here," the oldest Councilor sneered, gesturing toward Veda. "They can offer you nothing when it comes to the law, Alpha Fennigan. They are relics."
