Chapter 241 Didn't You Know That
When the frantic, consuming rush finally broke, Fennigan let out a long, heavy exhale, pulling her flush against his side.
They lay there in a warm, tangled heap of heavy limbs and slowing breaths, the absolute chaos of their desperate need settling into a profound, grounding peace. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the heavy curtains, painting the messy, ruined bedsheets in a soft, golden glow.
For a long time, the only sound in the Alpha suite was the steady, synchronized rhythm of their breathing.
"Ugh," Leela finally murmured, her voice thick and gravelly with contentment as she buried her face in the warm crook of his neck. "We should probably get up."
She didn't move an inch, but a lazy, brilliant smile pressed against his collarbone. "Sarah and Toby are probably ready for a nap by now."
Fennigan let out a deep, booming laugh that vibrated straight through her chest. He tightened his massive arm around her bare waist, keeping her anchored exactly where she was.
"There might not be anything left of Sarah and Toby when we get down there," Fennigan warned, his silver eyes gleaming with pure, unabashed amusement as he looked up at the ceiling. "The twins were giving them an absolute devil of a time when I came upstairs. Toby looked like he was regretting his Gamma promotion."
Leela propped herself up on one elbow, the sheets slipping down to pool around her waist. She looked down at her towering, lethal Alpha with a perfectly arched eyebrow.
"Are you saying my sweet, innocent little babies are a birth control poster for those two?" Leela teased, feigning a look of absolute, maternal scandal.
Fennigan smirked, reaching up to gently tuck a tangled curl behind her ear.
"I'm saying," the Alpha rumbled playfully, "that if Sarah and Toby survive babysitting Caspian and Briar for two hours without calling in backup, they deserve a raise."
Leela laughed, the bright, musical sound completely filling the bedroom. The horrific weight of Damon’s ledgers and the looming threat of the High Council felt a million miles away. Here, locked in their suite, they were just parents, completely and entirely in love, laughing at the sheer, unstoppable force of their own children.
With a soft sigh, Leela finally pushed herself up, reaching for the discarded t-shirt Fennigan had thrown across the room. It was time to go rescue their guards and get back to their pack.
Leela stepped out of the Alpha suite, the heavy oak door clicking gently shut behind them. But instead of turning toward the staircase to head down to the main floor, she stopped in the middle of the shadowed hallway. She reached out, her fingers wrapping firmly around Fennigan’s massive hand, and pulled him to a halt.
Fennigan paused, turning back to look down at his mate. One thick, dark eyebrow cocked upward in a silent, affectionate question.
"I felt nostalgic, Alpha Blackwood," Leela murmured, her silver eyes looking up into his, soft and completely open. A small, self-deprecating smile played on her lips as she looked around the quiet corridor. "I was just remembering the first time I kissed you. Right here in this hallway."
Fennigan’s quiet amusement melted instantly into something profoundly deep and reverent. He stepped closer, the comforting heat of his large body radiating against hers in the dim light.
"I was so scared," Leela confessed quietly, her thumb lightly brushing over his thick knuckles. She let out a soft, breathy laugh at the sheer absurdity of the memory. "And here we are... literally preparing to fight a war together. Facing down the High Council and Damon's horrific legacy. And I really think I was more afraid back then."
Fennigan’s expression softened completely. He remembered that moment with crystal clarity—the way she had hesitated, the electric tension crackling in the air between them before she finally gave in to the absolute, undeniable pull of their bond. He brought his free hand up, gently cupping her jaw, his thumb tracing the delicate line of her cheekbone.
"You weren't afraid of a physical war back then," Fennigan rumbled, his deep voice a velvet caress in the empty hallway. "You were afraid of falling. You were afraid of letting your walls down and seeing what it actually meant to be mine."
He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead, and then down to her lips. It wasn't the frantic, desperate heat of the bedroom, but a slow, unshakeable promise of absolute devotion.
"But you aren't falling anymore, Leela," he whispered against her mouth, his glowing silver eyes entirely fixed on hers with fierce pride. "You're leading. You're a Matriarch now. And I pity any Council member who tries to stand in your way."
Leela smiled against his lips, the last lingering ounce of her anxiety completely evaporating into the ether. She squeezed his hand one more time, feeling fiercely, incredibly invincible with him by her side.
"Come on," Leela said, her tone brightening as she finally tugged him toward the top of the stairs. "Let's go save our guards before Caspian and Briar make them officially surrender."
Leela and Fennigan padded softly down the remaining stairs, following the bright, echoing sound of toddler giggles drifting from the main living room.
Fennigan had promised absolute chaos, but as Leela stepped into the doorway, the scene that greeted her wasn't a battlefield at all. It was achingly sweet.
Sarah, a fiercely trained, lethal pack warrior, was sitting comfortably on the plush couch with Briar nestled snugly in her lap. The little girl was happily munching on a sticky half of a peanut butter sandwich, her feet kicking contentedly. Right beside them, Toby, the massive, heavily muscled Gamma guard, had Caspian situated firmly on his knee, the toddler enthusiastically devouring the other half of the sandwich.
Spread wide across the guards' laps, bridging the space between them, was a massive, brightly colored picture book.
Sarah leaned forward, tapping a gentle finger on the page. Caspian and Briar immediately paused their chewing. A chubby, peanut-butter-covered finger from each twin shot out, slapping the page as they both proudly babbled out the name of the animal in absolute unison. Toby let out a booming chuckle, clearly delighted by their brilliance.
Sarah looked up, her sharp guard instincts catching the movement in the doorway. When she saw Leela and Fennigan standing there, the tension in her shoulders completely melted into a tired, profoundly fond smile. She reached up to casually wipe a stray smudge of peanut butter off her own cheek.
"I still don't know how you do it, Leela," Sarah breathed, shaking her head in awe at the sheer, boundless energy of the Alpha pups.
Leela felt a warm swell of affection expand in her chest. She leaned back comfortably against Fennigan, sighing happily as his massive arms instinctively wrapped around her waist to anchor her against his chest.
"It takes the whole pack," Leela smiled, her silver eyes crinkling with amusement and deep, genuine gratitude for the warriors who guarded her family so fiercely. "That's exactly why you're here. Didn't you know that?"
Her bright, melodic laugh echoed through the room, mingling perfectly with the happy babbles of her babies and the deep, rumbling chuckle of her Alpha. The heavy, dark weight of the incoming war felt miles away, held entirely at bay by the unbreakable, loving walls of their pack.
