Chapter 27 The Dragon's Form
Elara's POV
Drakon led me to the largest balcony in the castle. Cold night air hit my face. Stars filled the sky above us.
"Are you certain you want to see?" Drakon asked. His golden eyes searched mine. "My true form is... big. Some people find it frightening."
"I need to see something real," I whispered. "Something honest."
The irony of those words stabbed my heart. I was the biggest liar here.
"Step back then," Drakon said gently. "Give me space."
I moved to the edge of the balcony. My hands gripped the stone railing.
Drakon walked to the center. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
Then he began to change.
His body stretched upward. His arms lengthened. Scales rippled across his skin like black diamonds spreading everywhere. His face pushed forward into a long snout. Massive wings burst from his back with a sound like thunder.
Within seconds, a huge dragon stood before me.
He was beautiful. Terrifying and beautiful at the same time.
Black scales covered his entire body, gleaming in the moonlight. His wings spread so wide they could cover half the castle. His tail was longer than three horses. Golden eyes, still his eyes looked down at me from a face full of sharp teeth.
"Oh," I breathed. My fear melted away. "You're magnificent."
Drakon lowered his enormous head closer to me. Steam puffed from his nostrils. When he spoke, his voice was deeper, rumbling like distant thunder.
"You're not afraid?"
"No." I stepped forward without thinking. "I'm amazed."
Something in my chest pulled me toward him. Like invisible strings tugged at my heart.
I reached out my hand slowly. My fingers trembled.
"May I touch you?"
Drakon nodded his massive head. "Yes."
My palm pressed against the scales on his snout. They felt warm. Smooth but hard, like touching polished stone heated by the sun.
The moment my skin touched his scales, everything changed.
Light exploded between us.
Golden light, bright as the sun, burst from where my hand met his face. It spread up my arm, across my chest, wrapping around my whole body. The same light covered Drakon, making his black scales glow.
Power surged through me. Not painful, but overwhelming. Like lightning and music and warmth all mixed together. I felt Drakon's heartbeat in my own chest. Felt his surprise matching mine. Felt his emotions flooding into me; wonder, joy, confusion, and something deeper. Something that felt like coming home.
The light faded as quickly as it appeared.
I stumbled backward, gasping. My hand tingled where I'd touched him.
Drakon's eyes were huge. "Did you feel that?"
"Yes." My voice shook. "What was it?"
Drakon transformed back to human form in seconds. He grabbed my shoulders gently, staring at my face like he was seeing me for the first time.
"That shouldn't be possible," he said. His voice was filled with shock. "That light, that connection, it only happens with true mates."
"True mates?"
"Dragons have one perfect match in the entire world. One person whose soul fits with ours like two pieces of a puzzle." Drakon's hands trembled on my shoulders. "When true mates touch for the first time, there's always a golden light. Always that connection. But it's incredibly rare. I never thought I'd find mine."
My heart soared and crashed at the same time. This was wonderful. This was terrible.
"Maybe it was a mistake," I said weakly. "Maybe the light meant something else."
"It wasn't a mistake." Drakon pulled me closer. "I felt your emotions, Elara. For just a moment, I felt everything you were feeling. That only happens between true mates."
Guilt crushed my chest. "Drakon, I..."
"I know you're scared. I know this is overwhelming." He touched my cheek so gently. "But this explains so much. Why I felt drawn to you from the moment we met. Why every moment with you feels right. Why I love you so deeply already."
Tears burned my eyes. "You love me?"
"Yes." He smiled. "I think I loved you before I even knew your real name. My soul recognized yours."
This was the cruelest twist yet. We were true mates. Destined for each other. And I was lying to him about everything.
"We need to tell someone," Drakon said excitedly. "Thorne should know. And Faye, she studies dragon magic. She can explain what happens next with the mating bond."
"Next?" My voice came out small.
"The bond grows stronger over time. Eventually, we'll be able to sense each other's emotions always. Share thoughts. Feel when the other is in danger." Drakon's smile was so happy it broke my heart. "True mates are connected forever, Elara. Nothing can break that bond."
Except lies, I thought. Except betrayal.
"Let's find Faye now," Drakon said, taking my hand. "She'll be so excited!"
We walked through the castle corridors. Guards bowed as we passed. Drakon couldn't stop smiling. He kept squeezing my hand like he was afraid I'd disappear.
We found Faye in the library, reading by candlelight. She looked up as we entered, and her face went pale.
"What's wrong?" she asked immediately. "You both look strange."
"Something wonderful happened," Drakon announced. "Elara and I, we're true mates! We felt the connection when she touched my dragon form. The golden light appeared and everything."
Faye dropped her book. Her mouth fell open.
"You're certain?" she whispered. "The golden light? The emotional connection?"
"Yes!" Drakon laughed. "Isn't it amazing?"
But Faye wasn't smiling. She looked at me with growing horror in her eyes.
"Oh no," she breathed. "Oh no, no, no."
"What's wrong?" Drakon's smile faded. "This is a good thing, isn't it?"
Faye stood up slowly. Her hands shook. "Drakon, true mate bonds are wonderful. They're the most powerful magic in existence. But..."
"But what?" I asked, though part of me already knew.
Faye's eyes filled with tears. "True mate bonds can't form based on lies. They require complete honesty between both people. If either person is hiding something major, something that would break trust, the bond becomes unstable."
My blood turned to ice.
"What do you mean, unstable?" Drakon asked.
Faye looked directly at me. Her expression said she understood everything. She knew I was hiding terrible secrets.
"If a true mate bond forms and then one person's lies are revealed, the bond doesn't just break," Faye said quietly. "It shatters violently. Like glass exploding. The magical backlash is devastating."
"How devastating?" Drakon's voice was careful now.
Faye's next words destroyed me.
"But there's a problem," she said, her voice shaking with fear. "True mate bonds can't form based on lies. If either person is hiding something major, the bond will break violently when the truth comes out. It could kill you both."
