Chapter 123 Uncovering the Conspiracy
Elara's POV
"Lily?" I stared at her name on the list, my world shattering. "No. There's been a mistake. Lily would never..."
"Search her room," Drakon ordered guards, his voice hollow. "Now."
"Wait!" I grabbed his arm. "She's my sister! She loves us! This has to be a forgery!"
But doubt crept in. The dark magic inside Lily. The Eternal King's influence. What if he'd corrupted her completely? What if my sweet sister had been working against us all along?
Guards returned quickly, carrying a locked box from under Lily's bed. Inside, maps of the castle with assassination routes marked. Poison vials. Letters discussing the conspiracy.
All in Lily's handwriting.
"No." The word came out broken. "She's twelve years old. She wouldn't..."
"She has the Eternal King's power inside her," Drakon said gently. "Maybe it took control. Maybe she's not even aware of what she's doing."
We ran to Lily's chambers. Found her sleeping peacefully, looking innocent and young.
I shook her awake. "Lily! Wake up!"
Her eyes opened. Normal at first. Then they flickered dark. The Eternal King's presence.
"Finally figured it out?" The voice from her mouth wasn't hers. "I've been using your sister for weeks. Every secret meeting she attended. Every strategy session. All reported directly to me."
"Get out of her!" I summoned ice magic. "Leave my sister alone!"
"Make me." The Eternal King laughed through Lily's voice. "Oh wait, you can't. Because hurting me means hurting her."
"We'll find a way to free her," Drakon snarled.
"Maybe. But not before tomorrow's battle. She'll be my eyes and ears during the fight. My saboteur inside your defenses." The dark presence faded, leaving Lily confused and disoriented.
"Elara? What's happening? Why are you looking at me like that?"
She genuinely didn't know. The possession happened while she slept, using her body without her awareness.
"We need to secure her," Thorne said quietly. "For everyone's safety."
"She's a victim!" I protested. "Not a criminal!"
"A victim who could kill someone while possessed," Drakon said. "Elara, I know this hurts. But we have to protect people."
With tears streaming, I helped lock my sister in a protected room. Magical wards to prevent the Eternal King from using her.
Lily cried, not understanding why we were imprisoning her. Each sob broke my heart.
But we had other conspirators to deal with.
Over the next hours, Thorne arrested everyone on the list. Fifteen nobles total. Some went quietly. Others fought.
The interrogations revealed the full scope. Some conspirators were true believers in the old prejudices. Others were just greedy for power. A few were genuinely scared of change and thought they were protecting their way of life.
"What do we do with them?" Thorne asked as dawn approached. "Execute them? Exile them? The Eternal King's army arrives in hours and we're dealing with this mess!"
"We hold trials," I said firmly. "Fair trials. Even for traitors."
"We don't have time!" Drakon protested.
"We make time." I stood firm. "If we execute people without trial, we're no better than Morgana. We claim to believe in justice. Prove it."
So we held the fastest trials in history. Each conspirator got to speak. Explain their actions. Defend themselves.
Some defenses were weak. "I wanted power" didn't earn sympathy.
But others were heartbreaking. One old noble cried as she explained, "My grandfather was killed by a magical creature. I was taught to fear them. I thought I was protecting my grandchildren from the same fate."
"Your fear doesn't justify murder," I said. "But I understand it. You'll be exiled, not executed. Use your exile to unlearn the hate you were taught."
We separated conspirators into three groups. The genuinely dangerous executed, the power-hungry exiled, the fearful re-educated and given a second chance.
"You showed wisdom today," Drakon's mother told me afterward. "Mercy and firmness in equal measure. You're becoming a great queen."
But I felt empty. My sister was possessed. Four ambassadors were dead. And in one hour, the Eternal King's army would arrive.
"Is everyone ready?" I asked as we assembled our forces.
"As ready as we can be," Thorne reported. "Though we're still outnumbered three to one."
The Eternal King's army appeared on the horizon. Thousands of resurrected enemies. Led by the Eternal King himself.
But something was wrong. The army stopped. Didn't attack. Just... waited.
Then the Eternal King's voice boomed across the battlefield. "BEFORE WE FIGHT, I HAVE A PROPOSAL! ELARA MOONSTONE! I'LL RELEASE YOUR SISTER! CURE HER COMPLETELY! IF YOU AGREE TO ONE SIMPLE CONDITION!"
"What condition?" I shouted back.
"COME TO ME! ALONE! UNARMED! LET ME REMOVE THE CRYSTAL FROM YOUR CHEST! DO THIS, AND LILY GOES FREE! YOUR FAMILY LIVES! REFUSE, AND I KILL HER FIRST! THEN EVERYONE ELSE!"
Drakon grabbed my arm. "It's a trap. You know it's a trap."
"Of course it is." I looked at my husband. "But it's also a chance to save Lily. And I can't pass that up."
"You'll die," he said. "The moment he has that crystal, he'll kill you."
"Probably." I touched the pendant he'd given me, his dragon scale. "But I have to try. She's my sister."
Before Drakon could stop me, I walked toward the Eternal King's army. Alone. Unarmed. Heading straight into death's embrace.
Behind me, I heard Drakon scream my name. Heard Thorne ordering troops to hold position. Heard the entire kingdom collectively hold its breath.
I walked forward anyway. Because saving Lily was worth any cost. Even my life.
The Eternal King smiled as I approached. "EXCELLENT CHOICE! NOW KNEEL BEFORE ME! AND I'LL MAKE YOUR SISTER'S FREEDOM... RELATIVELY QUICK!"
