He expected to run into her, but she wasn’t there. Standing in the center of the dark, crumbling mental landscape was a creature.
It was immense, its body covered in a dense coat of brilliant, sky-blue plumage that shimmered even in the dark. It possessed the sleek, predatory musculature of a dragon, complete with sleek, obsidian talons and a heavy, sweeping tail on which each father shimmered with golden light, but its upper torso split into the magnificent, terrifying form of a two-headed bird. As Ruhkaal approached, both heads snapped toward him. Four reptilian, ruby-red eyes locked onto his soul, burning with a fierce, ancient intelligence.
This had to be her shifter form, Ruhkaal realized, awe striking through his panic.
She was beautiful, and he had no idea what she was.
The creature let out a low, dual-toned trill that sounded like a mourning song. Wreathed around its massive wings were the remnants of the fire he had given her during the ritual, but the flames were dying, reduced to low, smoldering embers of gray ash. The blue feathers were losing their luster, turning a brittle, deathly gray.
The creature was freezing to death from the inside out.
"I've got you," Ruhkaal whispered, his astral form stepping forward into the path of those crimson eyes. "I'm not letting you fade."
He gathered the absolute purest essence of his elemental fire and molded the flame, shaping it into a thick, glowing torc of braided, white-hot gold light.
With a steady hand, he reached out and placed the fiery collar around the base of the creature's twin necks.
The moment the elemental fire touched the beast's skin, a seismic shift rocked her subconscious.
The dual heads threw themselves back, letting out a piercing, triumphant shriek that shattered the surrounding darkness. The dying embers around its wings violently reignited, exploding into a roaring inferno. The dull, sky-blue plumage flashed into a blinding, crystalline sapphire. The feathers hardened into iridescent scales of pure, translucent gemstone, catching the light of his fire and refracting it into a breathtaking kaleidoscope of rainbow light. The fire itself changed, burning with a cool, stellar radiance that danced across the sapphire facets of her new form.
The well was no longer dry. The fire was alive.
He just hoped that meant she would wake up soon.

Isorai blinked against a sudden, serene brilliance.
The pain of her shattering armor, the agonizing chill of her empty veins, and the roaring voice she’d used to run the ritual were entirely gone. She was no longer falling through the branches of the Great Tree. Instead, she found herself seated at an immense, polished round table carved from a single piece of reflective moonstone.
Sitting around the table were seven women, each draped in gossamer robes the color of the first morning light. Their faces were terrifyingly beautiful, etched with an ancient, timeless wisdom. A soft, genuine smile broke across Isorai’s face as a profound sense of peace washed over her. She knew these faces, though she had never really seen them.
"The Dawncallers," she whispered. She let out a soft breath, leaning back in her seat. "I died. I actually did it. I’m joining your ranks?" She sniffled. “I… I think I can make peace with that, given everything.”
To her surprise, a melodious, echoing ripple of laughter answered her.
The woman seated directly opposite her, whose hair looked like spun starlight, shook her head, her eyes crinkling with warmth.
"Oh, child, you are far from dead. Do not underestimate the resilience of the blood you carry."
"You are not joining us," another dawncaller added, her voice like the chime of silver bells. "This is a welcome. A formal acknowledgment of what you have fought for, bled for, and achieved. Your ascension is complete, High Matron Isorai."
Simultaneously, the seven women stood. As they rose, seven magnificent spears materialized in their hands, their shafts forged from starlight and darkness. Their blades gleamed with solar fire. Across the shaft of each spear sat thirteen intricate metal rings, chiming and glowing softly, vibrating with an unsung song.
Together, the Dawncallers raised their spears and struck the moonstone floor in perfect unison.
A sharp, beautiful crack echoed through the dreamscape. The space behind them fractured. White light parted to reveal a long, winding pathway that glowed with an inviting blue light.
"Walk the path, High Matron," the first Dawncaller said, bowing her head, making Isorai’s throat tighten. "We expect truly great things from you."
Isorai stood, the phantom weight of her mortal exhaustion completely gone. She stepped away from the table and followed the glowing path as it wound deeper into the subconscious architecture of her new existence.
The air grew cool and sweet, vibrating with a familiar, rhythmic rushing sound. The path terminated at the base of a colossal, breathtaking waterfall. It was a roaring torrent of liquid opal cascading from an unseen height, swirling in a mesmerizing display of iridescent pinks, blues, and golds. It reminded her of the Laeryos Fountain. But was this place actually inside her? She watched the tun off and wondered where it all went to.
Without hesitation, Isorai stepped forward, walking directly through the opalescent veil. The liquid fire  washed over her soul like a balm, scrubbing away the residual soot of the fight, the trauma of her fall, and the lingering chill of the underworld.
On the other side of the waterfall stood an immense, monumental doorway made of dark stone and iron like the door to a vault. It was shut by thirteen massive deadbolts.
Isorai placed her hand against the stone. The locks tumbled in a rapid, musical cascade. The deadbolts slid back one by one, and the vault door swung inward without a whisper of welcome.
She stepped through, and her breath vanished into  a gasp of awe.
Spread out before her was a vast, untouched, and utterly beatific forest. It was a pristine, primordial paradise, untouched. At the center of this paradise loomed a giant tree, its canopy so vast it seemed to touch the edge of infinity. Surrounding this sanctuary were thirteen distinct, roaring rivers of crystal-clear water, their currents humming in a flawless harmonic chord.
Understanding hit her with the force of a tidal wave.
This wasn't an outer realm. This was her magical core. It was the source of her power, a boundless, immortal reservoir that she now realized she shared with the collective consciousness of every High Matron Moongrove who had ever preceded her in the long history of their people. She was no longer a solitary witch pulling power from the dirt; she was the living anchor of an eternal line.
As she wandered into the forest, the sky above underwent a magnificent transformation, turning into a shifting dome of crystal fire that cast beautiful, dancing geometric shadows across the emerald grass.
She walked for what felt like hours, soaking in the absolute peace of her own soul, until she reached a quiet, sun-drenched clearing near the roots of the central tree.
Slowly, another presence registered.
How was there anyone else here?
