Chapter 55: His own blood

The night sky was heavy with dark clouds, the faint glow of the moon barely visible through the thick mist that clung to the air. Kaelen sat on the edge of his bed, his hand clutching a small, worn piece of parchment. The words written on it burned into his mind: Darius moves against you. Lyra is in danger.

His heart pounded in his chest as he read the message again. His brother and his own blood was behind the chaos that threatened not just the kingdoms but the woman Kaelen had vowed to protect. The realization left a bitter taste in his mouth. Darius was never one to play fair, but this... this was treachery beyond anything Kaelen could have imagined.

He crushed the parchment in his hand, rising to his feet. The room felt too small, the walls closing in on him as his thoughts spiraled.

“Darius,” he muttered, his voice low and filled with anger. “What have you done?”

A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. It was Thane, his trusted friend, his face pale with worry.

“You called for me?” Thane asked, stepping inside.

Kaelen nodded, his jaw tight. “Darius is stoking the flames of war. He’s using the tension between the kingdoms to make his move for the throne.”

Thane’s eyes widened. “That’s a bold claim. Do you have proof?”

Kaelen handed him the crumpled parchment. “This was sent to me anonymously, but it matches everything we’ve seen. Darius has been positioning himself for months planting spies, spreading rumors, and now... targeting Lyra.”

Thane’s brow furrowed as he read the message. “If this is true, then he’s not just after the throne. He’s after her because of the prophecy.”

Kaelen’s heart clenched at the mention of the prophecy. He had tried to ignore it, to pretend it didn’t matter. But deep down, he knew it was unavoidable. The union of fire and shadow will bring peace or destruction. Lyra, with her fiery spirit and her dragon, Ashfire, was half of that prophecy. And Kaelen, cursed by shadows that whispered in his mind, was the other.

“She doesn’t know,” Kaelen said quietly, pacing the room. “Lyra doesn’t understand what she means to this kingdom or to me. And now she’s in the middle of Darius’s schemes.”

Thane hesitated before speaking. “If she’s the key to peace, Kaelen, then she’s also the biggest threat to both worlds. That’s why Darius is targeting her. If he can control her or worse, destroy her he wins.”

Kaelen stopped, his fists clenching. The thought of Lyra in Darius’s hands made his blood run cold. “I won’t let that happen,” he said firmly.

Meanwhile, Lyra stood in the center of the training grounds, her dragon, Ashfire, towering behind her. The creature’s scales glimmered like molten gold, its fiery eyes locked onto Lyra as if sensing her turmoil.

“I don’t trust this, Ashfire,” Lyra said, her voice steady despite the storm brewing in her chest. “Darius doesn’t just show up without a reason. He’s planning something, and I need to be ready.”

The dragon let out a low growl, its breath hot against her skin.

Lyra smiled faintly, resting a hand on its massive snout. “I know. You’ll always protect me. But this isn’t just about us. This is bigger than we realize.”

Re appeared from the shadows, her expression unreadable. “Lyra,” she said softly, “the Council is calling for you. They want to discuss the upcoming battle.”

Lyra frowned. “The Council? Why now? They’ve ignored me for weeks.”

“Because they know you’re important,” Re replied, her tone sharp. “You’re the only one who can face Darius without fear. They need you, Lyra. Whether they admit it or not.”

Lyra sighed, her hand falling from Ashfire’s snout. “Fine. I’ll go. But I don’t trust them, Re. Not for a second.”

Back at his estate, Kaelen prepared to leave. He couldn’t sit idly by while Lyra was thrown into danger. Thane stood by the door, watching as Kaelen strapped on his armor.

“You’re going after her, aren’t you?” Thane asked.

Kaelen nodded. “She’s walking into a trap. I can’t let her face Darius alone.”

Thane hesitated. “Kaelen... What if the prophecy is true? What if your union with Lyra brings more harm than good?”

Kaelen froze, his hands tightening on the straps of his armor. “I don’t care about the prophecy,” he said quietly. “All I care about is her. If the world wants to tear itself apart because of us, so be it. But I won’t lose her, not to Darius, not to anyone.”

Thane sighed, a hint of a smile on his lips. “You’ve always been stubborn. Just... be careful. Darius is dangerous, and the Council isn’t far behind.”

Kaelen nodded, his eyes blazing with determination. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. Even if it means facing Darius myself.”

At the battlefield, Elric stood at the edge of the camp, his gaze fixed on the front field. The tension in the air was seen, the soldiers around him preparing for the inevitable clash.

“Darius is close,” one of his scouts reported.

Elric’s jaw tightened. “And Lyra?”

“She’s heading toward him,” the scout replied. “She doesn’t know it’s a trap.”

Elric cursed under his breath. “She’s brave, but reckless. We need to intercept her before it’s too late.”

The scout hesitated. “What about Kaelen? He’s been spotted heading in the same direction.”

Elric’s eyes narrowed. “Kaelen won’t let her fight alone. But if he confronts Darius, this could escalate into something much worse.”

Lyra arrived at the Council chambers, her steps echoing in the grand hall. The members were seated in a semicircle, their faces blank masks of indifference.

“You summoned me,” Lyra said, her voice firm.

One of the elders, a man with cold eyes, spoke first. “We’ve received word that Darius is advancing toward our lands. We need you to lead the charge against him.”

Lyra crossed her arms, suspicion flickering in her eyes. “Why me? You’ve never trusted me before. What’s changed?”

The elder hesitated before answering. “You’re the only one who can stop him. Your bond with Ashfire gives you an advantage no one else has.”

Lyra’s jaw tightened. She didn’t believe them, but she couldn’t afford to back down. “Fine,” she said. “But if this goes wrong, the blood is on your hands.”

As she left the chambers, her mind raced. Something about this felt wrong, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it. Darius was out there, and she needed to stop him.

Kaelen rode through the night, his dragon flying low above him. His heart pounded as he neared the battlefield. He could feel Lyra’s presence, a pull that was impossible to ignore.

“Hold on, Lyra,” he muttered. “I’m coming.”

Lyra, Kaelen, and Darius were on a collision course, their fates intertwined. The prophecy loomed over them, its shadow stretching across their every move. And as the night deepened, the lines between love, loyalty, and betrayal blurred, setting the stage for a battle that would change everything.
