Chapter 34
Grace
“I feel like I’m on an adventure with my big sister.” Wyn beamed.
I smiled at her gently. “Technically, you’re my niece.”
We both shared a little giggle.
We hit up Donut Dunkers on the way here, and I wore a black dress that went to my knees, along with a light grey cardigan par Wyn’s request. She had on a suit, like my tiny security. Not even a human would take her miniature frame seriously, but I allowed it. At my left was Sainevvi, someone others Would respect, being at least 6’5 and 220 pounds. The purple dragon held no words or smiles. He took his post…. Very seriously.
I went upstairs, and Terra was on the phone. She put them on hold. “Thank the Light. Mr Fibi is already downstairs.” She whisper-yelled as if he’d hear. “Where’s Mr. Midas?”
“He’s with another client.” I lied on the spot… it felt weird to do so… She also seemed to have questions on who was with me, but she assumed they were security by their matching suits and earpieces.
“Alright…. I’ll cancel.” She said worriedly, but I stopped her.
“I got it. Tell him Mrs. Midas is coming down.” I said with a smile.
“Yes ma’am.” She said respectfully. I could hear her try to console the nearly growling client. When I got down there, I’d give him a piece of my mind.
I silently rode the elevator, and I was kind of surprised at the supernatural creature that was down there. It was a feathered serpent, a quezoquatal…. He sat tall and proud, but his scowl turned into a smile when he saw me enter.
“Finally.” He got up, shaking my wrist… His grip was firm iron. “You’re late.” He said neither rude nor loud… He was a cold blooded creature… They did not think the same way.
His human formed hair held the coloration of a red macaw… bright red down the middle of his long ponytail, but down the sides were long braids of blues and gold… He held a gold nose ring, and looked as if he were from South America. His eyes were completely black…. Though I could tell he was able to judge souls with a glare like that.
I’d never seen one in person… even with Supernatural creatures, they were kind of a myth since they lived such solitary lives…
“What business do you seek?” I asked shaking his wrist….
“Our territory overlaps.” He said firmly. “A single mortal has summoned me. That single mortal holds my brand across the back of their nek. I had to kill one of yours. I brought his body.” He motioned the Rogue smelling corpse of a dragon in human form…. How did I not notice that?
“That’s a Rogue.” I said firmly. “That one is not claimed by our people.”
“Oh? This does not exist with my kind.” He said firmly. “The one warning still stands. I would rather not fight a Dragon Lord about this, but she is the last of her kin… and as far as I know, I am the only feathered serpent permitted dual citizenship from the spirit world.”
“Does the mortal have a job?” I said as a proverbial lightbulb went off….
“She does, but she does not like it. I am her guardian. Since she is not to know of us, her protection is my only duty.” He said firmly.
“Her scent would be in here, and when she leaves, the scent of Golden Financial will be on her clothes… a Rogue would not come after her.”
“I would find this acceptable, though I give no direct contact with Yazmina Gonzalez.” He said staring me in the eyes. There was no emotion to them… nor in his voice. It was cold as ice.
“If you have her information, I can arrange her to be scouted in person.” I said thinking out loud.
“She may not go for that, and assume you are spam, as she says.” He mumbled.
“Where does she work??” I asked.
“At the goblin run restaurant, the Shattered Dish.” He said with a growl. “I have been tempted to curse that place, but I will hold off until she is gone.”
“We could all go there for lunch. I could call the staff and make sure that I get her as a server.” I said seeing his face light up.
“I cannot be seen by her, but if you leave this on the table, she will listen.” He said cutting off one of his small blue braids, and it became a long blue parrot feather.
… I could feel the luck radiate off it…
“Wow. Alright. Do you mind waiting here?” I asked.
“I am a spirit beast. I have eternity.” He said simply.
His aura felt… like one of safety… He did this out of kindness and concern for the human, being her guardian protector.
I pressed the button under the table. “Terra I’ll be right back. Send some restaurant staff to attend Mr. Fibi.”
“Of course ma’am.” She said calmed down. I think she thought he was an angry investor.
“I do not need food, but I would gladly take some hot cocoa with chili. I know your people may not know what xocōlātl is.” He said with a small smile.
“I can stay and serve him my lady.” Said Wyn.
“I do not mind, small dragon.” He said with a nod.
“Go ahead.” I said being escorted now by Sainevvi. He said nothing, being my shadow.
We rode the elevator, and he had his car downstairs. I could have used a company car, but I also didn’t mind riding in the Nissan he drove. I half expected him to have a muscle car, but it couldn’t be denied that non-sports cars were Much roomier.
“You can talk, you know.” I said as he silently put the address of the restaurant in his GPS.
“Then I will say this; you handled the spirit beast well. She must be of royal blood to summon a spirit so strong. One that holds a mortal shape, and can eat and drink mortal food….” He said a little frustrated.
“Yeah, and he doesn’t care if it’s a Rogue or not… We don’t need them starting a war with something that isn’t’ killable.” I grumbled.
“But he Can be banished…. Maybe.” He mumbled. “I already texted his majesty a transcript of our meeting. It’s literally what I used to do with father.” He said rolling his eyes.
“Sounds like You attended meetings, and he enjoyed being king.” I said with a smile.
“Yup.” He popped the p… he reminded me of Aureus. “Sainevvi do this or that while he was out whoring. Don’t tell Silver’s mother… she foolishly thought she was his last.” He chuckled. “He didn’t stop with her… He just started wearing condoms.”
I put my hand to my mouth… the Scandal. Not a super Surprising scandal, but if it got out, it would make Drama….
“I’ve also texted the owner. He’s going to fire her this afternoon, and all we have to do is leave the card and the feather.” He said like an assistant would to their boss.
“Simple enough.” I said with a nod. We were here so fast.
The restaurant was upscale, and I could tell who we were looking for. She was a very petite older woman… Her white hair and bent over stance wasn’t expected. I thought we would be coming to ‘save’ a young maiden, but for her to be so aged, the spirit did his job well.
“Welcome. I have your reservation Mrs. Midas.” She said with a warm smile. Her hair was in a bun, and she wore a suit. This restaurant made me feel almost underdressed, even though we both were in business attire.
Once we sat, she already had water to pour, and a special bread dish for the table. It was honey buttered croissants, six in total. She left us with the menu, and I didn’t care what I got to be honest.
“…. If not for her age, I would want her for my court.” Said Sainevvi.
“She scents about 90… Oh here she comes.” I said on a hushed whisper.
“Now that you’ve been seated a moment. Is there anything else I can get you?” She asked like grandma, the Wolf Queen does… We were her babies… it does not matter how old you get… you are a pup to her.
“I would like the beef stew.” I said not really wanting to eat, but being served gives me a chance to think.
“I will have the mutton sliders.” Said Sainevvi.
“Would you like to try our select Rouge in Blu? The grapes from Tuscany are red, but their secret process makes the wine blue.” She smiled.
We both nodded, and she left again.
Me and Sainevvi ate our bread in silence. We didn’t have anything in common that I knew of, and if we did, he didn’t want to talk to me too much. I could only assume he didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.
“She smells delicious.” He mumbled. “I bet she tastes like nobility…. That’s a Rare flavor you don’t get often.” He said lowly.
“I get that, but scenting like Golden Financial will save her life.” I said as she came back. The food and wine were done so fast… The kitchen Knew who we were and made us the priority, but her service did make the dining experience very pleasant.
She had no idea about anything going on, and part of the mission was to keep it that way…. I wonder did she even know she came from royalty….
We ate, and when we got the bill, I put the card in her hand. “Your skills aren’t appreciated here. If you Ever want to get paid a salary, contact me directly.” I said with a smile. I also gave her a nice tip.
“Thank you.” She beamed.
“It’s no problem. Please don’t forget to call. We have a restaurant that’s short staffed.” I said shaking her hand and leaving…. That was likely the most stressful thing I’d done, since humans are so fragile….
I saw her look… surprised and knowing once she rubbed the feather across her thumb. I left it on the table as we exited the building… but I heard her mumbling as she cleaned the table.
“I must be about to lose my job today…. He is looking out for me again.” She said looking up.
“Sounds like a mission accomplished.” Said the Second Seat. He opened the car door for me.
“It does… He must make sure her life is comfortable.” I said seeing Sainevvi nod.
“I hope this is enough to prevent a war with the spirit world.” He said driving back to Golden Financial.
