Chapter 15 The Trial Of Regret

Chapter 15 The Trial Of Regret

The staircase wound higher, narrowing as it spiraled into an ever-brighter light. The silver glow from the third trial faded, replaced by a deep crimson aura that seemed to pulse in rhythm with Rin’s heartbeat. Her wings of fire quivered slightly, coiling tightly around her arms as if sensing the danger that awaited.

Ahead, the platform opened into a chamber unlike any she had seen before. The walls were mirror-like, reflecting not her current self, but her past memories she had tried to bury, moments of failure, loss, and regret. Every reflection shimmered with molten red light, as though alive.

Rin stepped forward cautiously. Her palms were hot, wings flaring instinctively, fire coiling along her veins like serpents ready to strike. She could feel the Spire probing her mind, seeking the pain she carried, testing her strength to endure it.

A voice whispered from the mirrored walls, soft but cutting: “You failed them. You left them to die. You could have done more.”

Rin froze. Her chest tightened. The reflection shifted, forming a scene from her past the factory collapse that had claimed her parents. She was there, powerless, wings unformed, unable to save them. The fire in her veins surged violently, reacting to her grief and guilt.

“No… it wasn’t my fault!” she shouted. The flames around her coiled wildly, licking the mirrored walls, leaving trails of molten heat. “I… I did everything I could!”

The reflections shimmered and multiplied, forming countless versions of herself, each accusing, each sorrowful, each angry. They reached for her, their eyes burning with judgment.

This is your trial, a voice rumbled through her mind the Sovereign, present and alive. You must face your regret, not flee from it. Only by confronting it can you transform it into power.

Rin’s hands shook. She could feel the fire in her veins responding to her inner turmoil, threatening to spiral out of control. She spread her wings fully, letting the flames coil and twist, and took a deep breath.

I am not my past, she whispered. I am Rin Astra. I am fire. I am control.

With that thought, the flames along her arms and wings stabilized, reshaping into precise, flowing forms. The reflections of herself lunged, but Rin did not strike to destroy. She let the fire flow over them, embracing the scenes instead of rejecting them. The molten light illuminated each memory, transforming anguish into warmth, failure into lesson, loss into strength.

The shadows of regret resisted at first, writhing, screaming, trying to consume her. But Rin held firm, fire dancing at her fingertips, flowing from her chest like molten rivers. She reached outward with both hands, coiling flames around the mirrored images, not to obliterate, but to integrate. Slowly, the countless versions of herself merged into one a single reflection that smiled faintly, eyes glowing gold, serene yet powerful.

Rin exhaled, wings folding slightly. The chamber pulsed with approval, the red glow shifting to a softer crimson. She felt the fire in her veins synchronize with her heartbeat, her mind, her body, and her soul. She had faced the regret that had haunted her and transformed it into strength.

Well done, the Sovereign’s voice rumbled, deeper and warmer now. You have embraced your past and transformed it into power. But mastery requires more than strength it requires understanding, discipline, and foresight.

The floor of the chamber began to shift. Black and red molten paths formed, creating intricate patterns. Each step carried not just danger but a test of precision. Rin realized the chamber was now shaping itself to the next phase of the trial: movement, focus, and control while under pressure.

From the far end of the chamber, a new shadow emerged—this one larger than any she had faced, a Nullbeast infused with anti-fire energy. Its aura shimmered blue-black, cold and lethal. It lunged forward, massive claws slicing the air, aiming to overwhelm her.

Rin reacted instantly. Flames coiled around her, forming wings, shields, and molten blades. She leapt into the air, twisting to avoid the strike, and released a controlled burst of fire toward the Nullbeast. Sparks exploded, filling the chamber with light, but the creature recovered immediately, undeterred.

The floor beneath her shifted violently, tilting and narrowing. Rin had to combine her fire control with acrobatic precision, leaping from platform to platform while maintaining offensive and defensive maneuvers. Her wings flared, coiling fire around each movement, giving her lift, protection, and power simultaneously.

As she battled, Rin realized the final part of the trial was not just combat it was harmony. Her fire, her mind, and her body had to move as one. She inhaled deeply, letting every pulse guide her, every beat of her heart synchronize with the flow of energy in the chamber.

Her fire responded perfectly. Flames spiraled along her wings, arms, and chest, extending outward to form intricate patterns that both shielded and attacked. The Nullbeast lunged again, claws aimed for her chest, but Rin’s fire coiled into a precise strike, hitting its weak point. The creature screeched, staggering, then dissolved into harmless embers.

The chamber grew silent. The red glow softened, flowing gently along the walls, and the mirrored surfaces reflected only Rin herself strong, confident, and whole. She landed lightly on the platform, wings folding, fire simmering along her skin.

You have passed the fourth trial, the Sovereign said softly. You have faced regret, integrated it, and emerged stronger. Remember this, Rin Astra: your fire is a reflection of your heart. Only when both are aligned will you become unstoppable.

Rin bowed her head slightly, exhaling a long breath. “I understand,” she whispered. Her chest ached, her wings were sore, but she felt stronger than ever fire and heart aligned, past transformed into power.

Ahead, the staircase spiraled upward into a faint golden light. She could feel the next trial awaiting her, promising challenges that would test not just her fire, but her will and her judgment.

Rin stepped forward, flames coiling lightly, wings spreading in anticipation. Whatever comes next, I will face it. I am fire. I am control. I am the Ember Sovereign’s heir.

The staircase narrowed, the golden light growing brighter with each step. Rin’s reflection in the molten floor shimmered, not with doubt, but with certainty. She ascended, ready for the trials yet unseen, ready to master her destiny and the power within her.

The path is long, she whispered, but I will rise.
