Chapter 35 MARKED BY MEMORY

Chapter 35 MARKED BY MEMORY
“I know what I saw.” She interrupted.

Her body moved on its own accord, stepping closer to the center of the room, as though an unseen thread pulled her forward. The air around her shifted — warm at first, then thrumming with the faint echo of ancient magic. Haven didn’t understand it, not fully, but her instincts did.

Auren’s hand hovered at her back, ready to catch her if she swayed. Imogen and Draven watched her like she had just stepped onto a tightrope suspended above the abyss.

Haven lifted her wrist.

A faint shiver rippled through the library. Dust motes froze in the air. The torches dimmed.

Her skin glowed.

Not bright — not yet — but enough that all three men straightened instantly.

The burnt-red imprint that had vanished earlier shimmered into view, the lines rearranging themselves like ink coming alive under her skin.

She breathed out shakily.
“This marked me,” she murmured. “Athalia didn’t say it in words, but… I felt it. When she cried — when her tear touched the sigil — it reacted. And when I touched it, it reacted again.” She looked up, meeting Imogen’s startled gaze. “The library responded to me. It chose me.”

Imogen stepped forward, voice hushed. “The mark doesn’t appear for just anyone.” He circled her wrist, careful not to touch it. “Only for bloodline heirs… or those the library deems necessary.”

Draven’s jaw tensed. “Or doomed.”

Haven’s chest tightened. “Meaning?”

Draven folded his arms. “The library of lost souls was created to protect the weak. But the journey to it is made for the strong. If it chose you… it means you’re tied to whatever is coming.”

Auren’s aura flickered dangerously — the flames beneath his skin responding to the threat only he sensed.

Haven exhaled shakily. “I know I’m not strong enough yet. That’s why I said I need to train. Athalia showed me… she showed me everything she lost. Everything she risked to create that place. She did it for her people — for mine. And she died with the fear that no one would ever find it.”

Her voice cracked.

“I can’t let all of that be for nothing.”

Auren touched her chin, gently forcing her to meet his eyes.
“You will not face this alone,” he said, voice low, determined. “Not while I’m breathing.”

Something warm — painfully warm — spread through her chest. The mark on her wrist pulsed once, as if agreeing.

Haven sucked in a breath as a sudden rush of heat shot up her arm. Threads of red light curled along her skin like serpents of magic awakening from a centuries-long sleep.

Imogen’s eyes widened. “It’s reacting again. Lady Haven — what are you doing?”

“I…” Her throat tightened. “I don’t know.”

Her fingers trembled. The glow intensified — soft, steady, ancient.

Auren grabbed her wrist, his touch scorching but stabilizing. “Easy,” he murmured. “Breathe.”

She did.

Slowly.

And the light softened, settling into a quiet hum beneath her skin.

Her eyes fluttered open.

“I think it wants me to find it,” she whispered.

Auren’s expression darkened. “Then you will. But not today. Not untrained. Not unprepared.” His thumb brushed over her cheek. “You nearly vanished in that vision. I cannot — I will not — lose you.”

Her pulse tripped over itself, a fluttering mess against her ribs.

Imogen straightened, breathless. “Then I suppose training begins now.”

Draven huffed a short, grim laugh. “Let’s hope she’s ready.”

Auren’s gaze softened on her, fierce and tender all at once.

“Little Flame,” he murmured, “show us what Athalia left behind.”

And with the three of them watching, Haven lifted her glowing wrist again — ready to begin the first step into power, and toward a destiny she never asked for… but could no longer run from.
