Chapter 209

Chapter 209
Vesper

The rage burning through me wasn't the wild, uncontrolled fury I'd felt before. This was something colder, sharper—a blade forged in the depths of grief and tempered by absolute determination. My eyes blazed crimson as I rose into the air, wings spreading wide, every muscle in my body coiled tight with lethal intent.

Morrigan's laughter echoed across the battlefield, rich with centuries of cruelty. "Oh, how delightful! So you think you can defeat me without your precious dragon fire?" Her smile was a slash of venom. "Then perhaps you'll rely on your fae magic instead? How utterly predictable."

She raised her crescent staff, and the air itself seemed to recoil. "Allow me to educate you, half-breed. Fae magic is even more useless against me than dragon fire. I've had millennia to dissect every spell, every incantation, every pathetic trick your kind could muster."

Moonlight erupted from the staff's tip in a cascading barrage, each beam sharp enough to slice through steel. I twisted through the air, my body moving with an instinctive grace I hadn't possessed before. The beams hissed past me, close enough that I could feel their heat, but for the first time in this entire nightmare, my mind was crystalline clear.

Below, voices rose in panicked confusion.

"God... Draken's down. The dragon king himself couldn't stand against her."

"Maybe—maybe we shouldn't have opposed Morrigan. History always repeats itself, doesn't it?"

"We're fucked. Completely fucked. When has anyone who defied Morrigan ever escaped her wrath?"

"Remember what happened to Elyndra?" Another voice, thick with old grief. "She was the strongest fae talent in generations, Vesper's own mother. And Morrigan destroyed her. Destroyed them both—her and that dragon prince she loved."

"If we run now, we're dead. If we stay, we're dead. There's no winning against her."

The words should have crushed me. Instead, they ignited something deeper. These people—my people, Draken's people—they were looking at me as their last hope. Not because I was powerful, but because I was the only one left standing between them and annihilation.

I felt the weight of it settle onto my shoulders like a mantle. The fae. The dragons. Everyone who'd ever suffered under Morrigan's cruelty. They needed me to be more than just a thief with stolen magic. They needed me to be the weapon that could finally end her reign of terror.

Fine. If that's what it takes.

I stopped dodging and hovered in place, my body beginning to tremble—not from fear, but from the sheer force of magic building inside me. Both sources of power, dragon and fae, ancient and primal, started to converge at my core. I compressed them together like a pressure cooker, forcing them to merge despite the agony it caused.

My veins felt like they were filled with molten glass. My bones creaked under the strain. But I didn't stop. I couldn't stop.

Morrigan's voice drifted up to me, casual and cutting. "Such a shame, really. Your mother, Elyndra—if she'd possessed even a fraction of your resolve, she might have died with some dignity intact." Her smile widened, showing too many teeth. "Instead, she chose the coward's way out. Suicide. How disappointingly mundane for someone of her supposed greatness."

The words were meant to break me. Instead, they were gasoline on an already raging inferno.

I barely registered Morrigan's movement until she materialized directly behind me, staff raised high, moonlight coalescing into a spear of pure annihilation. The attack came down with the weight of centuries behind it, fast enough that even my enhanced reflexes shouldn't have been able to react.

But the magic inside me had reached critical mass.

Time seemed to slow as I opened my mouth and spoke the words that had become my signature, my declaration of power: "Kneel before the storm, weaklings scatter!"

The command wasn't just sound—it was reality itself bending to my will. The fused magic exploded outward in a shockwave of silver-black energy that hit Morrigan like a physical wall. She was blasted backward, her perfect composure finally cracking as shock registered on her ancient face.

I didn't give her time to recover. The instant she was airborne, I teleported, closing the distance in a heartbeat and materializing directly in front of her trajectory.

"Fuck!" Morrigan's eyes widened. "You actually managed to fuse two bloodlines of millennial magic? How the fuck did you—"
