Chapter 83 A mom
“Do you know her phone number!”, the police officer tending to her asked as he saw how shaken she was.
“No!”, Isabella answered truthfully as she sighted the ambulance driving into the street.
“Do you have anyone we can call to inform them of the situation!”, the officer asked yet again.
“No! It's just me!”, Isabella answered truthfully.
She didn't know Celia's number would come In handy at such a time.
She zoned out of the conversation with the officer as she saw the fellow shaken citizens going about their nights.
Romano, Isabella thought as she thought she saw her co-worker.
“Romano?” She called out in question, wondering if truly she wasn't seeing things as a result of the ordeal.
“Romano?!?!”, she called out yet again as Romano looked towards her.
Sitting in the back seat of one of the patrol cars, Romano was rather surprised to see his coworker in such a state.
Seeing that they knew each other, the officer gave them some privacy, leaving them to have a discussion.
“Maria!”, Romano called out as he approached Isabella.
“Are you okay!?”, Romano asked as he looked at Isabella from top to bottom.
He had gone into hiding and only caught a glimpse of the burglar holding someone captive, he had no idea it was Isabella.
“What are you doing out by this time?!”, Isabella asked, curious with tear stricken cheeks.
“I closed up the shop late because of the new recipe we're trying, I was walking down to get a cab when I heard gunshots!”, Romano answered.
“Ohh okay!
He held a gun to my head earlier!
I felt so helpless!”, Isabella said, breaking into another round of tears.
The moment had been such a reality check for her.
“My goodness! That's very terrifying!”, Romano said as he wrapped Isabella in a hug.
“I didn't bring my phone out earlier. Is it okay if you help me call Celia!?”, Isabella asked as Romano didn't know the situation like Celia did.
If she went to the hospital, Romano would know what happened and she desired to keep the news under wraps till later.
“Okay! Sure! I I can do that!”, Romano said as he looked between his phone and Isabella’s expectant face.
His eyes still on his phone, he glanced towards the gauze on Isabella's legs to keep her from bleeding.
Her fate is even worse than the couple who were robbed earlier.
“Hi Celia! Something happened, can you come by the restaurant’s street! When you get here just approach the crime scene!”, Romano said, explaining the situation briskly.
“Isabella was shot!”, Isabella heard Romano say before he hung up the phone.
As the paramedic approached Isabella, Romano backed up so she could be given medical attention.
“Stretcher please!”, the gloves woman shouted slightly as she saw the wound on Isabella's legs.
“This might hurt!”, she said as she helped Isabella up and onto the stretcher.
Romano’s phone rang, the caller ID reminding him of a task he should have completed.
“Oh shoot! Maria! I'm so sorry! I wish I could stay, but I can't…!”, Romano started.
“Oh okay! It's fine!
Celia's on her way though, right?!”, Isabella asked, her voice still shaky from the ordeal.
“Yes! Yes she is!”, Romano said as he waved goodbye.
“Alright bye!”, Isabella replied, unaware that Romano had rushed to get a cab.
Sitting in the van, Isabella reflected on how desperately she didn't want to be harmed for the sake of her baby.
Is this really what motherhood is like, she thought as her hands found their way back to her stomach.
She wanted to keep her baby safe, although she had been lucky during the ordeal, she made a mental note to avoid going out at night.
Making a decision meant sticking to it, Isabella quickly realized she wanted her baby to be safe.
“Maria!?
Maria!?
Maria?!”, Isabella heard Celia's voice as she approached the van where Isabella was receiving treatment for her wound.
“Right there!”, an officer directed as he had earlier documented Isabella with her alias.
“Oh my God! Are you okay!?”, Celia asked as she ran towards Isabella.
For someone she had seen hours before, she didn't expect Isabella sitting on a van on her street with a blanket wrapped around her.
“I am!
I'm okay!”, Isabella reassured as she watched Celia worry for her.
“What happened!? Talk to me!”, Celia urged.
Isabella took In Celia's appearance as she talked about what happened earlier.
She looked so disheveled, like she had put the first clothes she found on and hurried to the place of the incident.
“I'm just glad you're okay!”, Celia said as she wrapped Isabella in a hug.
“I thought Romano was here!”, Isabella heard as she saw Celia look around.
“Uhmm yeah!
But he had something to do so he quickly had to leave!”, Isabella answered.
“I'm so glad you're okay anyway!
We'll give him a call later.
That reminds me? Why didn't you call?!”, Celia asked.
“I didn't take my phone with me! I only held cash and my keys! I wanted to get a drug prescribed for my morning sickness…!” Isabella drawled as she guessed Celia's reaction to her next statement.
“...I decided to keep the baby!”, Isabella said as she watched a huge smile on Celia's face.
“Ohhhhh!!!
I'm so going to be the best aunt ever!
I will be the aunt right?!”, Celia asked as she raised one of her eyebrows.
“Yes Celia! You're going to be the only aunt!”, Isabella answered.
“That's great news then!”, Celia said.
“But I want to keep this under wraps! I don't want anyone else to know In the mean time!”, Isabella said in seriousness.
“It's fine! I'll keep the news to myself.
You have nothing to worry about!”, Celia said as she properly cleaned the dried tears on Isabella's cheeks.
“Good evening ladies!”, the lady paramedic said as she came to a halt in front of Isabella and Celia.
“Good evening ma'am!”, the ladies said in unison as they glanced at her gloves hands holding a board.
“These are the results from the evaluation!”, the lady said as she watched Isabella's panic stricken face.
“It's okay! You're okay!
The baby's fine too…!”, the lady was cut short by the sound of missed gunshot.
Somehow, the burglar had escaped and unfortunately he was intent on killing someone.
