Chapter 4 The Ghost in the Shadows
The air on the balcony bit into my skin, sharp and unforgiving, but I welcomed the sting. It felt cleaner than the suffocating blend of expensive perfume, vintage champagne, and the quiet betrayal lingering inside the ballroom. Out here, I could finally breathe, if only in shallow gasps. I leaned against the cold stone railing, my fingers curling around the edge until my knuckles turned white. Below, the city glimmered like a gilded trap, beautiful only from a distance.
For a heartbeat, I allowed myself to pretend I was truly alone.
"You always did look better in red than in the shadows, Lisa."
The voice didn’t come from the doorway.
It rose from the darkness at the far end of the terrace, smooth and familiar in a way that made my heart seize violently. I spun around, panic flaring hot and sharp, my pulse suddenly roaring in my ears.
Dante Moretti stepped into the faint spill of light escaping from the ballroom.
He was unmistakable.
Where Silvio was polished stone and razor-edged control, Dante was unrefined fire rough, dangerous, and alive in a way that made the world feel unstable. He looked thinner than he had three months ago, his frame leaner, his face harder. Dark hollows clung beneath his eyes, the kind carved by sleepless nights and constant flight. He wore black, blending into the night like he belonged there, like he had finally learned how to disappear.
"Dante," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "What are you doing here? If Silvio sees you, he’ll kill you."
A faint smile tugged at Dante’s mouth, but it held no humor. "My brother’s been trying to kill me since we were kids, Lisa. Tonight isn’t any different."
He moved closer, his boots soundless against the stone floor. Each step tightened the knot in my chest. When he stopped, he was only inches away, his gaze dropping immediately to my midsection with an intensity that stole the breath from my lungs.
"Is it true?" he asked quietly. "The whispers from the servants’ quarters. That the Butcher brought home a ‘guest.’ A guest who spends her mornings over a toilet bowl."
The blood drained from my face so fast I felt dizzy. My hand instinctively drifted toward my stomach before I caught myself.
"You shouldn’t be here," I said instead, the words sharp with fear.
His eyes snapped back to mine. "Is it mine?"
The question wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. It was a low, dangerous growl, heavy with unspoken weight. Dante’s hand lifted, hovering near my stomach, but he didn’t touch me. The space between us pulsed with memory with that one impulsive, reckless night before Silvio had branded him a traitor and cast him out like a disease.
"It doesn’t matter," I hissed, glancing back toward the glass doors, half-expecting Silvio’s silhouette to appear at any second. "Silvio thinks I’m a debt settlement. He thinks I’m the daughter of his enemy. If he finds out about you, about us, none of us make it out alive."
Dante’s jaw tightened, fury flashing in his eyes. "He’s using you," he said. "Using you to draw out your biological father. But I can get you out of this, Lisa. I can take you away from this city. Away from him."
Just say the word.
For a split second, the world narrowed to that single possibility. Running. Disappearing. A life where my child wasn’t a bargaining chip in a mafia war, where fear didn’t sit heavy in my chest every waking moment. A life where I wasn’t owned.
But then Silvio’s face rose in my mind those dark eyes, that suffocating possessiveness. He wouldn’t let me go. He wouldn’t stop. He would hunt us to the ends of the earth, and he would enjoy the chase.
"I can’t," I whispered, my throat tight. "He’s already marked me, Dante. I’m his collateral."
Dante swore under his breath. "You were never meant to be his."
His hand closed around my arm, firm but not painful, desperate. And then
"Lisa?"
The voice cracked through the night like a gunshot.
We froze.
Silvio stood in the doorway, the golden light from the ballroom spilling around him like a halo edged with shadow. Every movement or rather, the lack of it was deliberate, calculated, and frightening in its stillness. His posture was relaxed, almost casual, but there was a tension in his frame that promised sudden, lethal violence. He didn’t glance at me, didn’t acknowledge my presence, yet the weight of his gaze pressed down on me like a physical force. My stomach knotted, my pulse spiking in warning.
His eyes were fixed on Dante. Sharp, dark, and unyielding, they traced every inch of the other man’s form, stopping on the single detail that drew all of Silvio’s ire: Dante’s hand resting on my arm. The grip wasn’t tight, but it was enough. Enough to spark that barely restrained fury in Silvio that always lingered beneath his cold, composed exterior. It was as if the air itself had thickened around them, electric and charged, the space between their bodies vibrating with unspoken threats and promises of blood.
I could feel it the pull of danger, the silent battle waging in the tension of their eyes. Dante’s protective stance was a defiance that Silvio would never forgive. And in that frozen moment, I was caught in the middle, a fragile, terrified witness to the storm about to break.
"Dante," Silvio said quietly.
It was the kind of quiet that always preceded bloodshed.
"I told you," he continued, his voice calm and deadly, "that if you ever set foot on Moretti soil again, I would forget we shared a mother."
Dante didn’t let go of me. Instead, he pulled me a fraction closer to his side, his defiance unmistakable. "And I told you, brother, that you take too many things that don't belong to you."
The tension between them was electric, thick enough to choke on. I stood trapped between the man who held my life in his hands and the man who carried my most dangerous secret. My heart pounded so hard I was sure they could hear it.
Silvio stepped onto the balcony, the night swallowing him whole. His hand slipped inside his tuxedo jacket, the motion slow, deliberate, and final.
"Step away from her," Silvio commanded, his eyes turning to obsidian. "Now. Before I make sure you never breathe the same air as my woman again."
My woman.
The words struck me like a physical blow. To Silvio, I was a debt, a possession. To Dante, I was a mistake born of longing and defiance. But in this moment, I was something else entirely.
I was the spark.
And standing between two brothers who would burn the world to claim or destroy what they believed was theirs, I realized the Moretti empire wasn’t just cracking.
It was about to go up in flames.
