Chapter 18 The Coronation of Shadows
The ballroom was a sea of black silk and shimmering diamonds, but to Lisa, it felt like a battlefield. The scent of a thousand lilies was so thick it was suffocating, masking the underlying smell of cold floor wax and hidden intentions. Tonight was the night Silvio would officially take his father’s seat as the Capo of the Moretti empire, and she was to be crowned his consort.
She stood before the full-length mirror in Silvio's suite, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. The dress was a masterpiece of intimidation a floor-length gown of midnight black lace that shimmered with obsidian beads. It clung to her curves like a second skin, the high collar giving her the appearance of a dark priestess.
"You look like a dream I never want to wake up from," Silvio’s voice echoed in the room.
He stepped out of the shadows, looking every bit the dangerous king. He walked behind her, his eyes meeting hers in the reflection. His large, warm hands settled on her shoulders, the contrast of his tanned skin against the black lace making her pulse jump.
"I feel like a target," Lisa whispered, her hand instinctively hovering near her stomach.
Silvio leaned down, his lips brushing the sensitive column of her neck. "You are. But you are a target protected by an army. No one breathes in this room tonight without my permission."
He reached into a velvet box on the dresser and pulled out the Moretti family heirloom a tiara of black diamonds and silver filigree. He placed it carefully on her head, the weight of it feeling like a heavy crown.
"Tonight, they will see that you aren't just a girl caught in a debt," Silvio rasped, turning her around to face him. "They will see the woman who stood in the crossfire for me. My Queen."
He pulled her into him, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that was both a promise and a prayer. It was deep, hungry, and filled with the desperation of two people who knew the world was waiting to tear them apart. Lisa melted into him, her hands clutching his lapels. In the heat of his embrace, the fear faded, replaced by a fierce, burning loyalty. She would walk through fire for this man, even if he was the one who had lit the flame.
As they descended the grand staircase, a hush fell over the room. Hundreds of eyes some curious, many hateful tracked their every move. Lisa kept her head high, her hand resting firmly on Silvio’s arm. She could feel the stares of the rival Dons, men who had known her father and saw her only as a bargaining chip.
They reached the dais where two ornate chairs waited. Silvio led her to hers, but before he sat, he turned to the room, his voice echoing with the power of a thunderclap.
"Today, the Moretti family begins a new chapter," Silvio declared, his hand finding Lisa’s and squeezing it. "And by my side stands the woman who has proven her blood is truer than any oath. Respect her as you respect me, or find out how short my mercy is."
The applause was polite but brittle. As the music started and the dancing began, Lisa felt the tension in the room tighten like a piano wire. Silvio was pulled away almost immediately by a group of elders, leaving Lisa to hold court.
She was standing near the edge of the dance floor when a woman approached Silvio’s cousin, Lucia, a woman known for having a tongue as sharp as a razor.
"A beautiful party, Lisa," Lucia purred, her eyes dropping to Lisa’s waist. "Though I wonder is the celebration for the coronation, or for the surprise you're carrying? People are talking, you know. They say the timing is curious."
Lisa felt the blood drain from her face. "The timing is exactly what the Don says it is."
"Of course," Lucia smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "But Dante’s friends have long memories. They don't like seeing their 'prince' in a basement while a stranger wears his crown."
Before Lisa could respond, a commotion broke out near the East entrance. The heavy doors swung open, and a group of men in grey suits—Dante’s personal guard from his time in exile pushed through the security line.
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Silvio was across the floor in a heartbeat, his gun drawn, but the men weren't aiming at him. They threw smoke canisters into the center of the room, filling the air with a thick, choking grey haze.
"Lisa!" Silvio’s voice screamed through the fog.
Lisa felt a hand grab her arm a grip that wasn't Silvio’s. It was smaller, more frantic.
"Come with us if you want to live," a voice hissed in her ear. "Dante has a boat waiting. He knows about the North Wing. He knows everything."
Lisa struggled, trying to pull away, but she was being dragged toward the back service exit. Through the smoke, she saw the silhouette of Silvio fighting off two men, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He was a lion being kept from his mate.
She looked at the exit, then back at the man who was bleeding for her. She realized then that Dante wasn't trying to save her; he was trying to kidnap his leverage back. He didn't care about the baby or her, he cared about the throne.
She reached into the folds of her dress, her fingers finding the heavy silver hairpin Silvio had given her earlier. With a cry of rage, she jammed it into her captor's hand. The man let go with a howl of pain, and Lisa didn't run for the door.
She ran back into the smoke, back toward the sound of Silvio’s voice.
She collided with him in the center of the room. Silvio grabbed her, his chest heaving, his eyes wild until he realized it was her. He pulled her against him so hard it knocked the breath from her lungs.
"I’ve got you," he growled, shielding her with his body as his men began to clear the room. "I’ve got you."
The rescue attempt had failed, but as the smoke cleared, Lisa saw the look on Silvio’s face. It wasn't relief. It was a cold, terrifying realization. The war had officially moved inside his walls.
"He tried to take you," Silvio whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, lethal promise. "Tonight, Lisa, we finish this. No more cages. No more waiting."
He kissed her then, right in front of the ruins of the party, a kiss that tasted of smoke and war. The tiara was crooked, her dress was torn, but as she looked into Silvio’s eyes, she knew she was finally where she belonged.
