Chapter 210 Playing With My Heart (CALIA)
It had been a week, and I still hadn't heard from Elion. He had promised to let me know as soon as he got back to Chicago from his business trip, but no message or even a phone call ever came. I sat lost in thought at my office, anxiously waiting a call from him. My phone lay on the table. I was torn between calling him first or waiting for him to call me. He was probably busy. He’d mentioned preparing for a new business venture in Barcelona. I didn't want to come across as one of those tacky women who cling to their boyfriends like leeches. Yikes—that’s gross. But when your man was Elion Starling, how could I not worry? He was rich and handsome. Plenty of women wanted him.
"Waiting for a call from someone?"
I turned to see Dimitry standing in the doorway.
"Hey, come in. I’m not waiting for a call from anyone."
"But you’re staring at your phone like you’re hoping for a call. Let me guess, is it Elion?"
"No, I’m fine. He’s away on a business trip to Barcelona."
"He must be busy. I saw him at a club a few nights ago. I think he had an important meeting; he was up on the second floor with some guys in suits."
My brow furrowed deeply.
"When exactly was that?"
"Saturday night. Yeah, I tried your advice about opening up. So, I accepted Lisa's invitation to grab a few shots at a club," Dimitry scratched the back of his neck, looking awkward. But I wasn't going to pry into his date with Lisa. I was more interested in Elion.
"Saturday night? That was three days ago."
"Yeah, I should have told you about Lisa, but I—"
"No, no, I don't mind. Really. I was just surprised because Elion had been in Barcelona since Wednesday. That means he was back by Saturday."
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to mess up your relationship with Elion. I was just letting you know that I saw him Saturday night."
"I know you didn't mean it that way. Thanks for telling me."
I’m terrible at hiding my disappointment. Dimitry must have noticed, because he immediately changed the topic, reluctant to discuss Elion any further.
"I came here to talk about my patient. After his second cardiac stent procedure, he complained of pain in his right abdomen. I’d like to collaborate with you on his treatment."
"Okay. I’ll review his medical record before visiting him in his room."
"Here’s his full medical records. I’ll leave you to look it over."
"Okay."
I couldn't focus on the man’s medical records because my mind was filled with negative thoughts about Elion. Why hadn't he told me he was back from Barcelona? Was he getting bored with me? Had he found another woman who was more interesting than I was?
I grabbed my phone. I couldn't stand listening to the whispers of those nasty little demons in my head anymore. I dialed Elion's number and waited, my heart pounding wildly. I wondered what Elion would say to cover up his lie.
"Hello?"
My heart sank. It wasn't Elion who answered the phone, but a woman.
"Who is this? Where is Elion?"
"He's busy."
"Busy fucking his sluts, you mean? I want to speak to him."
"Sorry, you can't speak to him right now. He's busy," the woman hung up.
I gripped my phone tightly, rage consuming me.
I checked my watch and hurriedly gathered my things. I was going to see Elion at his mansion and demand an explanation. Why was he playing with my heart again?
