An Iconic Name

In the gallery's rear room, I sat on the edge of an old desk and ran my fingertips softly over the spine of the worn diary Evelyn had given me before she departed for her new life overseas. The aroma of history and new beginnings mingled in the air, as did the smell of freshly painted walls and aged wood.

I opened it after hesitating. I wasn't really sure whether I was prepared to confront what was within. As the last few summit attendees remained, Damon's deep, steady voice cut through the clinking glasses and laughter coming from the main hall. This was meant to be a celebratory evening. It was a night when we could finally relax, knowing that the future we had created was beginning to spread beyond the two of us.

And yet, my heart was pounding just as it had the night when everything changed for me.

I turned the lid off. Out came a folded letter. As I lifted it up, my hand trembled a little.

When the moment is appropriate, for Emma.

The calligraphy was fluid and beautiful. Definitely my mother's.

I was unable to breathe for a while. It seemed as if the whole universe had shrunk to this one brittle sheet of paper, a thread binding me to a ghost I had been attempting to comprehend for a very long time.

I unfurled the letter and swallowed the knot in my throat.

"My dearest Emma,"

"If you are reading this, it indicates that you have discovered your own path and are prepared to face reality. I wanted you to discover your strength first, so I couldn't tell you anything while I was still here, not because I didn't trust you."

"You are descended from women who were visionaries as well as artists. In an era when society attempted to suppress her, your great-grandmother Lucia Renard was a trailblazer who fought valiantly for her art. In order to protect herself, she signed her work under a false name, allowing her soul to live on.

"That name… is also yours, though you never knew."

"Emma Lucia Renard."

"It is yours now, should you choose to claim it."

"With all my love, always."

"—Your mother, Isabelle."

With a gentle thump, the diary fell off my lap and onto the carpeting.

Renard Lucia.

Something deep inside me was aroused by the name, a link that spanned time and bound me to a lady I had never known but who had faced the same struggles and desired the same unattainable ambitions.

My eyesight became blurry from tears, but I didn't wipe them away. I let them fall, to mark this moment as both a beginning and an end.

It wasn't until Damon's hand settled softly on my shoulder that I realized he had entered the room.

He whispered softly, "Emma," bending down to look at my face. "What is it?"

Unable to find the right words to describe the screaming in my breast, I silently gave him the letter. His jaw tightened, then relaxed, his brows furrowed as he read rapidly.

He gazed up at me with warm, proud, and amazed eyes once he was done.

"Lucia Renard," he whispered to her. "You've always had something extra with you because of this. It runs in your family.

I gave a rough, trembling laugh. "Damon, I'm not even sure where to start. Everything changes because of this. And suddenly nothing."

He continued, "You don't have to figure it all out tonight," as he brushed a tear off my face with his thumb. "But maybe this is the reason you ended up here. Why is every picture, every danger, and every heartache significant?

I gazed at him, the guy who had supported me throughout storms I couldn't have predicted and who had put in as much effort to secure my aspirations as he had to secure his own.

Whispering, "I want to honor her," "I want the world to know who she was."

Damon gave a nod. "Then we'll make sure they do."

I was stabilized by his assurance.

With the letter still warm in my other palm, I took his hand and stood up. "There's more. The journal. It's full of hints regarding Lucia's secret paintings that the world was unaware she made, according to Evelyn.

His eyes shone brightly. "Are you saying there's another legacy waiting to be uncovered?"

Breathing, I said, "I think so," "And if it’s true... it could change everything we know about art history."

He smiled, that dazzling, deadly smile that had once pushed me to take a leap into an unimaginable future.

"Then what are we waiting for?"

The next morning, as the light slanted goldenly through the large windows, we sat at our kitchen table and looked over the diary.

Sketches, notes, and even clues to the locations where Lucia had concealed her most intimate works—not in galleries or museums, but in peaceful spots where only a true admirer would dare search—were found on page after page.

A hidden church in the woods of France.
A Spanish artist's loft that has been abandoned.
A dilapidated home with a view of the Amalfi coast.

Every hint spoke out to generations past, like a pulse in the dust.

I looked across the table at Damon. He seemed just as thrilled as I was.

I responded, "This could take months," as my heart began to race. "Years, even."

"Good," he said, holding my hand tightly. "We have time."

I grinned—a genuine, broad, agonizing smile. The future was something we could pursue jointly for the first time in a long time, rather than simply something we were attempting to endure.

We slept entwined on the balcony that night under the stars, the journal bridging the gap between us like a brittle link to a recently exposed past.

"You realize," Damon said gently, removing my hair from my forehead, "that this journey has the potential to alter everyone's perception of what they already knew." regarding you. about your family.

My heart thumping, I nodded. "And I’m ready."

"You're not alone," he said in a low voice. "You never will be again."

I let that reality seep into my bones as I closed my eyes.

I had been alone with the burden of the past for so long. It was now our goal, not just my responsibility.

It was time to tell Lucia's tale.

And in some way, I felt that sharing hers would enable me to at last fully comprehend mine.

After two weeks, we scheduled our trip to France, which was the first place on Lucia's map.

Damon rested his forehead against mine as the aircraft sliced through the sky.

"Ready?" he inquired.

"As I’ll ever be," I answered in a whisper.

But a silent uneasiness awoke someplace deep inside. Not precisely a dread.

Out there, something was awaiting us.

Something more than buried legends or lost artwork.

And I couldn't get rid of the thought that we were about to discover a secret far greater than we could have ever imagined as the jet swooped into the glistening lights of Paris.

Once again, something that has the power to alter everything.
