Chapter 46 Caught
Evelyn’s POV
One of the men lunged out from nowhere, grabbing my arm so tight that it hurt.
“Let go!” I shrieked, twisting so hard our bodies collided. “Who are you people and what do you want from me?!”
He wasn’t ready to let go. I screamed and twisted, biting the man’s wrist. Then he cursed under his breath. “You bitch!” and let go quickly.
I wrenched myself free, my body trembling, muscles screaming, but I forced myself forward on the last reserves of strength I had.
When I glanced back, I saw them closing in fast, eyes blazing with anger, relentless and unyielding.
Then, from afar. I saw multiple cars roar towards us. Loud. Violent.
My heart jumped. Could it be more of their men.
No…. no….. God, please no…..
The black SUVs tore closer and that was when I recognized them. It was Lorenzo’s men.
Before the vehicles even stopped, the doors were already flying open and his men poured out with guns drawn.
Screams erupted as people scattered. The men chasing me froze.
Lorenzo stepped out.
His eyes locked on me instantly. His face was carved from fury itself. Blood stained his shirt. His breathing was heavy, wild, like he’d driven straight through hell to get here.
My knees nearly gave out. I shouldn’t feel relieved. I was still running from him, but seeing him make a tight knot in my chest loosen just a little.
“Lorenzo….” I whispered, yet I didn’t move toward him.
He took three long strides toward me, expression hardening with every second he looked at the men around me.
“Who told you idiots you could touch her?” he growled.
They froze, hesitation settled through their movements. It was becoming painfully clear that they knew him.
I didn’t recognize a single face, but Lorenzo….. he did.
The realization hit me immediately as the men began to step back, uncertainty and fear creeping into their posture. Each retreat made it even more obvious how much power Lorenzo’s presence commanded
And yeah… that scared me.
Because if they were scared of him, then they must be one of his numerous enemies.
I swallowed. “Lorenzo….. who are these men? Why are they chasing me?”
“They’re not your concern,” he said, not looking at me. “I told you to stay where I left you!”
My jaw tightened. “I’m not your prisoner!”
His gaze snapped to mine, he gripped my shoulders, fingers digging into my skin. “And yet you keep running like one,” he gritted through his teeth, stepping closer.
I stepped back.
His eyes flickered, disbelief first, then anger, then something darker.
“Don’t walk away from me, Eve.” He warned.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I said, even though my voice shook. “I don’t trust you either.”
The men behind me shifted. I turned slightly, panic rising again.
“Evelyn,” Lorenzo said, deeper, sharper, “come here.”
“No.”
He let out a low, dangerous laugh. “You’re shaking like a leaf and still arguing.”
“I might not know who those men are,” I snapped. “But I would rather die in their hands than to go back with you.”
“Trust me. If I leave you here, you won’t survive the next minute.” His jaw clenched. “Those men….”
“I know who sent them, and believe me it will not take them anything to kill you,” he barked.
My whole body went still.
He closed the distance between us so quickly I stepped back again.
But he caught my arm.
“Lorenzo…..let go.” I slapped his hand.
“No.” His grip tightened. “You’re coming with me.”
“I said no!” I yanked.
He pulled me closer. “Evelyn, stop fighting me.”
“No!” My voice cracked. “I’m not going anywhere with you. I don't want to have anything to do with you."
“You keep telling yourself that,” he muttered, “but you ran straight into danger because you wanted to escape me. And I’m the only reason you’re still breathing.”
“I didn’t ask you to come!”
“You didn’t have to.”
His hand slid behind my waist suddenly, strong and unyielding, pulling me fully against him.
“Lorenzo!” I struggled so hard.
His voice dropped low, dominant, sharp. “You’re done running.”
“I’m not.” Tears burned my eyes. “My sister…. I need to get to Daisy…! ”
“You’ll get her,” he said. “But you’re doing it with me, only when I say so.”
“I don’t want to….” I pushed against his grip.
“Evelyn.” His hand tightened at my waist. “You almost got taken away from me.”
“I don’t care, so far I’m not in the hands of the man that murdered my family.!”
“You will soon care,” he said sharply. “Maybe I will have to send you to them too. But that will be after I get back my powers.”
My heart thudded painfully.
He lifted me, just lifted me like I weighed nothing, throwing me against his chest.
“Put me down!” I fought, kicking lightly.
“Don’t start,” he warned. “Because you will never win.”
His men formed a shield around us. The dangerous men scattered, Lorenzo didn’t have to fight. His presence alone was enough.
“You’re hurting me,” I whispered.
His grip softened instantly, but he didn’t let go.
“You’re coming back with me,” he said. “You don’t have to like it. You just have to stay alive.”
“I don’t trust you,” I whispered again.
He looked down at me, eyes burning. “Then I’ll make you.”
My breath caught.
He carried me toward the SUV, ignoring every stare, every camera, every whisper.
“Lorenzo, please put me down. I’m serious.” I begged, voice softer now.
“Never.” He growled.
“I’m not going back with you.” I sobbed.
“You are.”
“I’ll jump out of your car if you don’t free me.” My chest heaved, each breath heavier than the other.
“Then I’ll tie you to the seat.” He replied nonchalantly.
My eyes widened. “You wouldn’t.”
“Try me.” His voice was final. “You’re not leaving my sight again, Evelyn. Stubborn or not, scared or not, fighting or not. I’m never letting you go.” His voice cracked for a second, the tiniest break. “I’m not losing you for any reason.”
I swallowed hard.
He wasn’t angry because I disobeyed him.
He was angry because he was scared.
But I still whispered, “I will never stop fighting you.”
His jaw flexed. “And I will always win you.”
He placed me inside the SUV and he didn’t take his hand off me for even a second.
