Chapter 43 It's Time
Evelyn’s POV
“Hello….. Elena, are you there?” I whispered, careful not to let my voice echo.
“Yes, Eve.” Her voice came in. “Where are you? Daisy is ready for the transfer.”
I felt a weight lift from my shoulders, tears threatening to stream down my cheeks. At least part of the mission was getting successful.
Now, the next level, escaping without any of Lorenzo’s men seeing me.
“Fine. Thank you so much,” I replied her. “Just keep me in touch. I’ll be at the station very soon.” Then we hung up.
The room fell silent, only my shaky breaths and the pounding of my pulse filling the air, loud and torturous.
My gaze drifted back to the cracked mirror on the wall. The reflection staring back at me felt almost mocking.
I looked pale, my face flushed, lips drained of color, hair tangled and wild.
Nothing about this girl resembled the one I had been a month ago.
I ran a finger over my face, exhaling deep and shaky, trying to steady my racing nerves until I heard the door creak open.
I spun around.
“Nolan?”
He stood in the doorway, hands still gripping the handle, his eyes filled with pity.
“Eve,” he called slowly, walking toward me.
I stepped back. “No, Nolan, you can’t be here. He must be on his way now.” My voice grew firmer, though broken with fear. “Just go. I don’t want him to hurt you.”
“He won’t,” he growled.
Nolan reached for me, his hands firm on my arms, forcing me to meet his gaze. “Look at me, Eve. I’ll get you out of this, I promise.”
I shook my head, tears stung my eyelids. “You don’t know what he’s capable of, he’ll kill you if he finds you here.”
He searched my face with urgent intensity, trying desperately to calm the storm inside me. “I’ll fight him….even if it costs me my last drop of blood.”
Finally, I sank into his arms. The warmth of his embrace seeped into me, steadying my racing heart and quieting the chaos inside as I let the tears flow freely.
“Uncle never cares if I live or die,” I whispered.
His hands brushing my hair.
“He sold me to the same man who killed my family, as if I were not part of this family.” The words spilled out with pain.
“It’s fine, Eve,” Nolan said softly. “You’re not alone anymore. We’ll face him together, and we’ll see justice done.”
His heart pounded slowly against my ear, each beat a pulse of safety I had always found only with him.
Until it happened. The devil himself.
A shadow reflected in the doorway before introducing Lorenzo. His fingers clutched the wooden door the moment he spotted us. His eyes burned red with rage, jaw locked, shoulders squared as if ready to tear through anything in his path.
“You bloody bastard!” He grunted, making me flinch away from Nolan.
His gaze shifted between us, watching how Nolan made an attempt to grab me again.
Panic surged through me. “No! Lorenzo, it’s not what you think…..”
But it was too late. His men flooded the room, sharp eyes, cruel faces and in a heartbeat, they closed around Nolan, holding him fast.
My head moved in fear at what I knew they were about to do to him.
I rushed to Lorenzo, voice breaking as I pleaded, “Lorenzo…. please….Stop them!”
He stiffened but didn’t take his eyes off Nolan.
“He was just looking out for me!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face.
Lorenzo shrugged off my hands and strode toward Nolan, fury radiating from every step. “You’re not afraid to touch what’s mine?” he growled. Grabbing Nolan by the collar, he shouted, “Who gave you permission to hug her?”
Nolan struggled against their grip, muscles straining, fists clenching. “She’s not yours!” he spat, twisting to break free.
Lorenzo’s cruel laughter filled the room. Without a word, his hand shot out, slapping Nolan across the face. The sharp crack echoed against the walls.
“You got some nerve, huh?” Lorenzo sneered, delivering another brutal slap.
Nolan’s head snapped sideways, blood trickling from his split lips, but he refused to back down. “I….. I won’t let you hurt her!” he gasped, trying to lunge forward.
“Lorenzo, stop it!” I screamed, rushing over, hands gripping his arms, shaking him.
But it didn’t faze him. He yanked free and raised his hand again, ready to strike when a sharp voice cut through the tension.
“Boss.”
The room froze. Only Nolan groaned, body tense, fists clenched as he struggled to stay upright.
Gideon strode in, confusion flashing across his face as he watched the scene, before finally leaning over to Lorenzo, whispered something to him.
Finally, Lorenzo brought down his hand. He took the phone Gideon handed him and scanned every face in the room before he gave out his orders, “Don’t free him yet.”
He turned to me. The fire in his eyes melted slightly, but I could still sense possessiveness in him.
“Eve.” I lifted my head to him, anger boiling inside me. “I will be gone for a few hours. My men will bring you home.”
He stepped closer, breath hot on my face. “Any funny step…..” He turned to Nolan. “Your little boyfriend here will suffer for it.”
I swallowed hard, unable to say the words resting at the edge of my tongue.
Lorenzo gave his men a sign, and they swung into action. I watched as they dragged Nolan away like a common criminal. The room fell silent, just him, a few of his men, and me.
Then he came closer, swallowing the little air left in the room. “My men will keep an eye on you.” He nuzzled my neck, sniffing me with a sharp smirk. “Don’t miss daddy too much.”
He didn’t let me speak. He spun around and walked out, and his men followed.
I fell back against the wall, letting its coldness cool me, trying to make sense of everything that had just happened.
“God, Lorenzo is a beast with no heart,” I muttered. “There is no way I’m going to spend more days with him in the same house.”
“I have to use this opportunity well.”
