Chapter 14 My Humanity Vanished The Day I Died
Lorenzo’s POV
My head turned, taking in the environment that we had teleported to, and that was when the realization hit me.
It was a restroom.
I widened my eyes. “What? How the fuck did we get here of all places?”
We were supposed to be home, not in the middle of nowhere.
Then, I felt it. Evelyn clung to me with her eyes closed, shut tightly, as though releasing me would shatter the fantasy she was clinging to. She didn’t even breathe, she was gone, somewhere deep within herself.
“Funny,” I whispered with a sharp grin. “All that pride… yet you still want to feel daddy’s cock.”
She flinched, separating herself from me with a sharp thud. “No, no, no.” She swallowed hard, the sound echoing through the empty restroom.
“I was just scared.”
I gave out a small laugh, drawing my brow up. “Scared…?”
She nodded faintly.
“But I'm seeing something different.”
She shook her head in defiance. “You saw nothing.”
“Really?”
She did not talk again.
I went for my pants and buckled up the dangling belt. “We have to leave here.”
She glanced around before turning to me. “Wait, why did your magic bring us here of all places?”
I sucked in a long breath. “I don’t know either. Right now, we need to message Gideon to come pick us up.”
My hand went for the wooden door not far from us, and I pushed it open. It was when I stepped out that I realized it was a small bank.
Crazy. If I had been in possession of my powers, how would I have made the mistake of appearing in a place like this? Or how would those jerks have found me, let alone faced or threatened me?
I needed to act fast.
From their attitude, it was clear that someone had shared the news with my enemies that I’d lost my power, and this would be a perfect chance for them to strike.
Evelyn ran after me.
“Wait! I demand to know who those men are!” she questioned from behind.
I didn’t reply to her. It was useless because she would never understand.
She ran ahead, blocking me from moving forward. “Answer me or I will….”
“You will do nothing,” I cut her off. “For the last time, Evelyn, stop threatening me with your escape. Because no matter where you hide in this world, I will definitely find you.”
Her body eased, not as a surrender, but from a place that told she was tired of me.
I didn’t bother about it. I began to walk through the crowd. With every step I took, my shoulders brushed against someone because of how tight the space was.
“Wait!” Evelyn called out as she ran to catch up with me. By the time she finally drew close, her breaths were coming hard and heavy, each one a struggle.
“At least I deserve to know the men that almost took my life back there,” she pressed further, but this time more politely.
From her tone, I couldn’t bring myself to ignore her anymore. She was right. I had to find an answer.
“Please….”
I slowed down, my head still focused on the road.
“If only you had any idea of how many enemies I have out there.” Then I stopped, and she followed. “Enemies that would pay anything to see me down.”
“Evelyn, I have hurt more men than you can count, and most of them are after my life now.”
She forced her eyes to remain open, fear creeping inside her. “What? So you mean that the reason why I would have died there was because of your reckless life?”
I hissed, turning my head sideways. “No, you are wrong. They are not after my life because I was reckless. They were just being greedy.”
Her lashes fluttered, blinking profusely. “What do you mean?”
I relaxed my shoulders. “There’s a lot to know about me. Those men are some of the hungry bastards that crawled to me in tears asking for one favor or the other. It might be money, power, fame, or something bigger. Like the devil they see me as, I do answer their requests in exchange for something valuable to them.”
Evelyn’s throat stilled. “In something valuable, you mean…. their lives?”
I didn’t answer right away. I let the silence stretch, giving the tension a moment to loosen its grip, only then did I finally speak.
“Yes. Sometimes they offer that of their loved ones.”
Her face drained of color, eyes widening in horror. “Is….that actually why you killed my family too?” One of her legs moved back. “Tell me….which member of my family made a request? And what was that?”
I released a rough sigh. “Believe me, if you are very sure that you saw me burn down your family, then I would never lie to you. I can’t tell how, when, or what any of my victims asked of me. Once the termination is done, I move to the next person. I only keep records of the people owing me their lives, but not of people I send to hell.”
Evelyn staggered backward. “You are evil!” Tears circled her eyes. “Don’t you feel guilty? Don’t you have a little humanity in you?”
A bitter laughter erupted from me. “Humanity?” I moved slowly to her. “Don’t ever try and preach to me about humanity.”
“Why….?” she asked in a shaky voice.
“My humanity vanished the day I died,” I forced out the words through clenched teeth.
Panic flickered across her face. “What do you mean by the day you died?”
I held back at once. She was trying to bring back a past that I had fought so hard to forget.
It had been centuries since my second chance at life, and the one thing I couldn’t stand was trying to remember Delilah’s face.
Before I acquired my powers, I would always see her face in my dreams, the blood dripping from her pierced heart, her innocent face, the tears, and how she would call my name repeatedly, pleading that I come save her. But the more I got closer to her, the more the distance stretched between us.
After I had narrated the nightmares to Emiliana and how tormenting they were to me, she advised that I brush them off anytime she appeared and force myself not to see her again.
She said that Delilah would come to be by fate, not by my doing. And since then, I stopped searching but kept hoping, but that made me forget her face.
It’s been decades. I wonder what she will look like.
Will she still remember me?
Will she still have the scars I saw on her face on my dying day, the marks from the blades those horrible men used in designing her beautiful body?
After I stopped searching as Emiliana suggested, I took on a new mission. To hunt mortals, destroy them, and watch them die in pain.
It was just unfortunate that Evelyn’s family was among them, but that did not mean one of them hadn’t asked for it.
Just then, my phone buzzed, pulling me out of my thoughts. Evelyn was still standing there, so much hatred in her face, watching me like she would take no delay to end my life if given the opportunity.
I brought out the phone. It was Gideon. I had sent him my location the moment we stepped out of that restroom.
I swiped the answer button.
“Boss, I’m at the location.”
“We will be right there.” I ended the call, and my eyes found Evelyn, still glancing at me.
“We have to leave here, ASAP.”
She did not move.
“Did you hear me? I said we need to get going.”
Her voice came out tiny. “I don’t want to go with you.”
I closed the distance, my breath hovering over her face, daring her to resist. Her eyes half-lined, tilting her head up. The air suddenly shifted, thick between us. A push from a passerby broke the spell, slamming us together in one breathless, unplanned moment.
She flinched.
A slow, mocking smirk stretched across my face. “You can lie all you want with your mouth, but your body betrays every denial you make.”
I swept her hair aside, exposing the delicate curve of her neck. “I know you want me too…. It’s fine.” I leaned over, brushing the tip of my nose against her neck. “But trust me, I won’t force you. You will beg for this one day.”
Her lips curved in disgust. “No, I will never do such a thing….”
A dry chuckle passed my face. “We will see to that.”
My hand curled firmly around her wrist, forcing her steps to match mine as I led her without mercy.
“Let me go!” She slapped my hands, desperate to free herself. “Release me now or I will scream!”
