Chapter 54 CHAPTER 054
Days later, and there’s still no sign of the enigma, but that doesn't mean Soren has had a boring day in his life. If anything, it’s been the exact opposite.
Just a few days ago, Soren had experienced an earthquake and could have perhaps died, and now, Soren is trending all over the news as the beta whore who’s cheating on the most powerful man in the city with his alpha cousin.
Soren snorts as he reads the headline of the article one more time, the sound dry, almost disbelieving. It’s ridiculous and almost laughable. As long as it’s not his secret gracing these headlines, Soren almost doesn’t care what they say about him. Why the hell should he be offended by a lie when he’s a certified liar himself?
But not everyone thinks the same, especially Reign’s mother, Mrs. Evelyn Montgomery.
The alpha woman had burst in through the doors so early in the morning, barely giving anyone time to react, clutching an article filled with claims of his cheating. Her eyes had been locked on him instantly, sharp and furious, staring at him as if he had murdered her favorite cat—no, worse, as if he had personally betrayed her in the worst way possible.
Just like that, Soren lost whatever little peace he had managed to hold onto.
“You have some nerve,” the woman starts, her voice cutting through the room like a blade. “Reign’s only been gone for a few days, and you’re already swinging with his cousin. Have you got no shame? How dare you drag the Montgomerys’ family into the mud?”
The woman’s voice is like an awful ringing in his head that just won’t stop. Soren keeps his gaze blank as he looks back at her. “I never thought having a near-death experience with the alpha would be considered cheating. If you're truly concerned about the Montgomery's reputation, you should ensure that articles like this never get published, rather than coming here to yell.”
“You!” Rage flashes through her eyes as she points her finger at his face. “Watch your tone when you speak to me! I am Reign’s mother, and I won’t allow my son to marry a whore and a gold digger.”
Soren agrees to being a gold digger, but he isn’t a whore. He has never sold his body, no matter how desperate he was. He only signed the devil’s contract and gave his soul away. That was only his second sin.
His jaw clenches in anger, and his eyes harden. “I don’t owe you any explanation, so if you’ll excuse me, Mrs. Montgomery, I’ll be returning to my room.”
With a slight bow, Soren turns and walks away before she can vomit more from her mouth.
The moment Soren is behind the closed doors of his bedroom, he yanks his wardrobe open and takes out his suppressant pills from a medicine bottle. Instantly, he throws a few into his mouth and reaches for the glass of water on the table beside the bed and takes a few gulps.
Once he puts the pills away and sets the glass back down, he drags a hand through his hair, pacing like he’s trying to outrun something crawling under his skin. Soren needs to get out of here. He needs something other than the walls of his room and his heckling thoughts, and getting out of there is what he does.
~~~
The moment Soren arrives at the familiar bar he’d frequented almost his whole life before the devil took him away, he slams his palm loudly on the counter, grabbing the bartender’s attention.
“Give me your strongest drink,”
Theo tsks as he leaves his customer to approach the beta. “Never thought I’d see you here again. Last time, you nearly had my head rolling on the floor.”
Soren snorts. “Maybe this time, you’ll actually have your head rolling if you don’t give me what I asked for, Alpha Theo,” he says, pointing his finger at the alpha’s face. Soren desperately craves a drink; he needs to get drunk to clear his mind, but Theo snorts and rolls his eyes, and a few seconds later, he places a glass of orange juice with a straw in front of Soren.
“An omega shouldn’t drink.”
Soren’s hand stills mid-reach for the glass. Very slowly, he lifts his gaze to Theo, and there’s a dangerous calm in his eyes. “I’m not an omega,” he scowls.
Theo scoffs. “Right. And I’m the king of this city. What got your pants in a twist, and why are you here?”
Soren sighs and grabs his glass of juice, drinking from the straw and sucking the entire glass in one go before slamming the empty glass on the table. Theo smirks and pours him another glass of fruit juice. Soren throws him a glare while Theo chuckles.
Soren exhales a sigh and rests his elbow on the counter, his head on his palm, a pout owning his face. “I lost my virginity,” he mutters, silently dragging the glass of juice over and drinking slowly from the straw.
Theo pauses for a moment. “You had sex outside your contract?”
Soren snorts, though there’s no humor in it. “More like inside the contract. I had sex with Reign during his rut.” He takes another slow sip of the juice, eyes unfocused. “Now, I think I’ve fallen in love with the enigma.”
“…You think?” Theo raises a brow, a look of disbelief on his face. “How did you go from signing your rights away to giving him your body? How can you be so careless and not realize how dangerous it was? You could have died from inhaling too much of his pheromones, and he could have smelled your suppressant and found out you’re an omega. What were you thinking?!”
Soren looks at Theo with a deeper pout. “I know I fucked up. I wasn't thinking.”
“Clearly,” Theo counters with an unimpressed scowl.
“But it’s fine since I’m right here and haven't been thrown in jail. He doesn’t know I’m an omega. Maybe an enigma's senses aren’t as outstanding as they say. So, can you not scold me and actually give me a drink?”
TO BE CONTINUED.
