Chapter 498 Aurelia Reborn

Chapter 498 Aurelia Reborn
(Arkael Ashborne)

The palace woke long before the sunless skies beyond its walls began to glow. Arkael had always appreciated those quiet hours, before the corridors filled with voices, before petitions, reports and endless decisions demanded his attention. Before duty once again became visible.
Those first moments belonged only to the mountain.
He stood alone upon the highest balcony overlooking the great crystal basin, his hands resting lightly upon the obsidian balustrade while warm currents of air drifted upwards from the magma rivers far below. Thousands upon thousands of crystal formations stretched across the cavern beneath the palace, catching the orange glow of molten stone until the entire basin shimmered like a field of captured stars. Even after a thousand years, the sight still quietened something inside him.
Home.
It had taken so very long to build again.
His gaze drifted beyond the crystal basin towards the sprawling city carved into the surrounding cliffs. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys. Bakers had already lit their ovens. Smiths were opening forge doors that glowed with newborn fire. Children darted between stone walkways while exhausted parents attempted to shepherd them towards tutors and lessons before the day truly began.
Life. Life that should never have been stolen from them.
His fingers tightened slightly against the stone.
Apollo had called himself King. He had ruled from stolen halls over stolen people while the true blood of Hell had been hunted into extinction, scattered across caves and forgotten tunnels like frightened animals. Entire generations had lived and died believing they were little more than a legend.
Not anymore. The Emberborn had returned.
And now... So had their Queen.
A quiet smile touched his lips.
Aurelia.
For a thousand years he had spoken her name only in silence, terrified that saying it aloud might somehow diminish the memory he had carried for so long. Even now, after seeing Adelaide walk through the palace gates with his own eyes, there were moments he expected to wake and find himself once again inside some cold mountain refuge, surrounded by starving survivors clinging desperately to a prophecy that had begun to feel more like grief than hope.
She had been meant to stand beside him. The prophecy had never spoken of the Devil. It had spoken of the Queen. Their Queen.
She had chosen love instead.
One decision had cost Aurelia her life. It had cost the Emberborn their Queen. It had cost an entire people their freedom.
Arkael had spent a thousand years living amongst the ashes of that mistake. He would not allow history to repeat itself.
Instead... His second chance was here.
Not Aurelia reborn. No. Adelaide was unmistakably herself. Kinder. Softer. Far less certain of her own strength.
But every now and then... She smiled. Or tilted her head. Or looked at the world with that same impossible curiosity. And for just a heartbeat... He saw the Queen he'd failed.
He had failed her once. He would not fail her by allowing another Queen to make the same choice. He would not fail her again.
His youngest son had done exactly what had been asked of him. He had found the Queen. He had guided her home. For that, Arkael was proud. But pride did not blind him. Love had already begun weaving itself through places it had no business growing. He had seen it in the library. Seen it in the way Cael had forgotten himself while speaking of her. Seen it in Adelaide's eyes every time they wandered instinctively towards his youngest son. Affection became attachment. Attachment became loyalty. Loyalty became division.
He had watched kingdoms crumble beneath lesser mistakes.
Not again. Never again. The throne before prophecy. The people before family.
Always.
His gaze lifted towards the highest tower of the palace, where Adelaide's chambers overlooked the eastern cliffs.
Today she would see the throne. Today she would begin understanding what it truly meant to become Queen.
The Binding was only two days away.
After that... There would be no more uncertainty. No more divided loyalties. No more Devils whispering poison into Queens. Only one future. The future his people had bled a thousand years to reclaim.
Arkael drew one slow breath before turning away from the balcony.
It was time.
Arkael descended through the palace at an unhurried pace, acknowledging every servant, soldier and steward who greeted him along the way. They bowed as he passed. Some offered reports in hushed voices, others simple morning greetings. He answered each one with the same measured patience, never rushing, never dismissing them. A king who could not spare a moment for his people had no business asking them to follow him.
By the time he reached Adelaide's chambers, the palace had fully awakened. Warm light spilled from sconces carved directly into the volcanic stone walls, their flames dancing across veins of gold crystal that ran through the stone like frozen rivers of fire. Somewhere below, laughter echoed faintly through an open courtyard before disappearing beneath the steady rhythm of hammers striking steel. The palace no longer felt like a refuge carved from desperation. It breathed. It lived.
Two Royal Guards stood outside Adelaide's door. Each bowed deeply as Arkael approached.
"My King."
He inclined his head in return.
"Has Her Majesty risen?"
"She has, Your Majesty."
"And has she eaten?"
"Only a little."
He frowned almost imperceptibly.
"See that something warmer is prepared when she returns."
"At once."
Arkael dismissed them with a gentle wave before lifting his hand to the heavy timber door. Three measured knocks echoed softly through the chamber.
"Adelaide?" His voice carried easily through the polished wood. "It is Arkael."
