"What do you mean it's the baby? That's impossible." Bast said, narrowing her eyes at Damien who still remained in the doorway, keeping his distance for a reason I didn't quite understand.
"Allow me to explain, little Bastet. Recall if you will when I said the baby disliked when anyone got too close to you?" Sinclair said as he leaned against the table, looking down at her.
"Yeah, of course. You know how the baby feels, what about it?" she asked him with a shake of her head, waiting for him to explain.
"It's not because I know how the baby feels, it's because the baby can put its thoughts in my head. I assumed it is because my abilities made it easier for the baby to use its, but Damien has an ability much more similar to the babies than I do, so I'm honestly not sure anymore."
*'Damien has an ability? I can understand why Bastet knows about it before I do, but how in the hell does Sinclair know before me?'* I thought, turning to face Damien curiously. He shook his head softly, telling me that we'd talk about it later. *'Yeah, we better. Can't believe the recreant knows something about you before I do.'*
Bast let out an exasperated sigh, rolling her eyes at Sinclair. "For the love of God, stop calling my baby 'it' or god help me I will destroy you." She said, slamming her palm down on the table before she seemingly realized what Sinclair had just said and did a double-take. "I forgot about Damien's ability, he only talked about it once. I guess it makes sense that the baby has an ability like his. But you still have to explain that, because I'm not getting it."
Sinclair turned to Damien and me, widening his eyes as he shrugged, unsure of how to explain. I looked back at Damien, but he remained where he was, watching Bast closely, but making no move to help.
"I guess I'll give it a go then," I said with a sigh as I leaned forward in my chair, putting my chin on my hands as I thought about it. "Okay, you know the inner voice in your head? Sometimes it argues, sometimes it agrees, and sometimes it's just plain fucking obnoxious?"
"Yeah, of course," Bast said with a giggle, her green eyes lightening with amusement, her anger slowly dissipating.
"The baby can talk to you, as that inner voice. From what Sinclair explained, it still sounds and feels like your own inner voice, but he knew it wasn't his. You may not realize which voice is actually talking. Yours, or the babies."
"How did you know it wasn't yours, Sinclair?" Bast asked, turning her attention back to him curiously.
"I was imprisoned with only my thoughts to keep me company. I know what my thoughts feel like, little Bastet. It was pretty apparent and easy to decipher when an unknown voice enters my head."
"Okay, I think I understand now," Bast said as she looked down at her stomach and began rubbing it slowly, the look on her face turning to one I imagine only a mother could have. Her eyes softened until they were as bright and cheery as a meadow, her heartbeat both slowing and growing, a soft maternal smile on her beautiful face. 'Now I understand why they say mothers-to-be glow, I see it now. She is absolutely radiant.'
"Are you upset with your daddy? Is this why you made mommy turn herself in?" She mumbled softly as she rubbed her belly as if the baby could respond to her. *'Chances are he can respond, just hasn't figured out how to.'*
Damien finally came closer as he sat down next to me, his eyes still not leaving Bast's stomach as he watched in amazement. His electric eyes were filled with a multitude of emotions as he stared at his bride, and unborn child. Sadness, surprise, pride, and fear. It wasn't surprising as none of us could have guessed the power the child would have, but we should have. The vampire king temporarily turned human, and creating a child? That alone should have been hint enough to the power the child would hold. It was made with the venom and blood of the king, the most powerful being in the unnatural world. Coupled with the mother having the king's blood in her system while the child is growing? This child without a doubt will have more power and ability than it shows now, which is really saying something as it's already doing things we didn't know were possible.
"It says, 'Daddy almost got mommy killed.' And that if daddy is going to get the two of you killed, you're better off without him." Sinclair said suddenly, staring at Bast's stomach, before hesitantly bringing his hand to her soft bump, like he was afraid the baby would attack him if he did so.
"Move," Damien said, what Sinclair said seemed to have resonated with him as he suddenly snapped out of his funk, and crossed to Bast, putting his hand on her stomach as he shooed Sinclair away. "I'm sorry, child. I should have known to have extra protection for you and your mommy, I didn't consider something like this could happen." He whispered softly as he put his arms around Bast, pulling her into a hug.
Bast suddenly snarled and shoved Damien back, throwing him into the wall, her eyes blood-red. "I'm so sorry, that wasn't me." She gasped out as soon as she did it, her eyes reverting to green, widening in surprise.
"Do you feel better now?" Damien asked softly, looking to her stomach as he brushed off his suit and returned to Bast, kneeling down in front of her as he kissed the fabric above her stomach. The fact that he wasn't hit again seemed to answer enough for all of us, as Damien smiled as kissed Bast softly, before returning to the other side of the table.
"It says you better not mess up again, or it will kill you," Sinclair said, then laughed. "That is definitely your child, Lucifer. Already such a violent little thing and it hasn't been born yet."
"Sinclair, for the last time. Call the baby he, or so help me..." Bast trailed off as she closed her eyes and shook her head.
"Why should I? It's not a boy." Sinclair asked with a shrug, raising an eyebrow as he waited for a response.
"It's a girl?" Damien asked, a small smile appearing on his face as his eyes brightened in joy. Bast had the same reaction as her eyes flew open, meeting Damien's as her heartbeat increased again.
Sinclair shook his head as he sat down and leaned back in his chair, yawning. "No."
"For the love of God, man, how is it neither?" I finally asked, throwing up my hands in defeat. This is the only man I knew who couldn't give a straightforward answer.
"Because it's both. I don't know which is which, so I say it."
"It's twins! Damien, we're having twins!" Bast exclaimed happily as she jumped up from her seat, then immediately sat back down, holding her stomach. "I'm okay, the baby didn't like me doing that too much though. I mean... the babies." She said, smiling from ear to ear as she brought her hand back to her stomach.
"And it's a boy and a girl." Damien said incredulously, his joy unable to be hidden from his face until he seemed to realize something, and sighed. "We need to get you free."
"Almost wish I hadn't asked to leave the hospital so soon when I got poisoned." Bast said with a sigh, her joy being quickly replaced by her sadness as she thought about it.
"You were poisoned?" Sinclair asked, his surprise evident as he shook his head.
"That's it! That's how we get you off of this!" I exclaimed, turning to face Damien. "You own the hospital you took her to, don't you?" I asked him.
"Yes, why does that... You genius." He said, turning back to face Bast. "You'll be home tomorrow, my love. But we need to go and take care of this so you can be released." He said as he stood and kissed her so softly, it made my heart ache. Of course, I'm happy for Damien for finding his love, but seeing the two of them together made me wish I could find my one, the way Damien had.
"What is it?" Bast asked, her brows furrowing in confusion, waiting for one of us to tell her what we'd just realized. "And how did I not know that you owned a hospital?"
"It's the best way to get blood, without raising any questions." Damien responded with a shrug before bending down to kiss her stomach. "We need to go, kitten. I love you, and I'll be back as soon as I can, and get you out of this hell-hole."
"Okay, I love you too." She said as I knocked on the door, telling the guard we were done. Damien winced when he saw the guard putting handcuffs on Bast, leading her out of the room and back to her cell.
"It's alright, Damien. She will be back home soon, you don't need to worry about that anymore." I said as I clapped him on the back, walking with him back out of the station.
