The woods lay silent, a stark contrast to the chaos that had reigned just moments before. The youngest vampire prince, Lysander, had been vanquished. My heart pounded in my chest, the veins in my hand pulsing with a power I had only just begun to understand.
The sky was painted in hues of dawn, the rising sun casting a tangerine hue all over the sky. From the distant hills, the first ranks of the demon army appeared, their armor glinting ominously in the darkness. They moved with terrifying precision, a dark tide that swept across the land, leaving no doubt about their purpose. The ground trembled under the weight of their march, the sound of a thunderous roar that echoed in my ears.
At their head, guiding them with an unyielding authority, was Aphellios, the Demon Lord and my fiancé. His presence was a stark contrast to the chaos around him. He rode a massive, obsidian-black steed, its eyes burning with an unholy fire. Aphellios himself was clad in dark armor that seemed to absorb the light, his crimson eyes glowing with an intensity that could pierce through the darkness. His raven hair flowed behind him like a shadow, and the aura of power surrounding him was palpable, sending shivers down my spine.
His gaze was fixed on me, and even from this distance, I could feel the force of his will. There was a fierceness in his eyes, a blend of relief and determination that told me he would let nothing stand in his way. As he drew closer, the air around him seemed to ripple with his power, a tangible force that made my heart race. The demons around him moved with a synchronized precision, a testament to his control and leadership.
Aphellios raised a hand, and the army halted as if frozen in time. Silence fell over the woods again, broken only by the distant cries of night creatures. The moment stretched, charged with anticipation and raw emotion. It was as if the very world held its breath, waiting for what would happen next.
And then, with a sudden, explosive motion, Aphellios was off his steed and racing towards me. The ground seemed to blur beneath his feet, his figure a dark blur of speed and grace. My body reacted instinctively, a jolt of energy surging through me, but I was rooted in place, unable to move. The weeks of separation, the battles, the uncertainty—all of it faded in the face of his overwhelming presence.
Within moments, he was upon me, his arms encircling me in a desperate embrace. His touch was a mix of steel and warmth, the familiar scent of him—smoky and otherworldly—filling my senses. His voice, usually so composed and commanding, was raw with emotion as he whispered, "My love, I have found you at last."
For a heartbeat, everything else disappeared. The armies, the dangers, the questions—they were all eclipsed by the sheer relief and joy of being held by him again. His embrace was a sanctuary, a promise of protection and love that I had yearned for in every moment of our separation.
But as the initial rush of emotion began to ebb, reality intruded with the weight of unspoken truths and lingering doubts. The image of the second prince of the vampire kingdom, his eerie resemblance to Aphellios, surfaced in my mind. I remembered Lysander's final words and Felix's dire warnings about Aphellios. The accusations of soul theft and wolf sacrifices cast a dark shadow over our reunion.
Before I could voice my turmoil, Aphellios's eyes fell on Felix, who stood a short distance away, his expression a mix of sadness and resignation. Felix had been my steadfast companion, my confidant, and seeing him now, his presence a stark contrast to the joyous reunion brought a surge of protectiveness.
Aphellios's grip on me tightened, his gaze turning icy as he looked at Felix.
"Felix," he growled, his voice low and dangerous, “Is this what you are called? The man who dared to abduct the Demon Lord’s fiancee.”
"Before becoming your fiancée, Lady Fiona and I share an inseparable bond. I question whether meeting a friend in seclusion can be considered abduction," Felix retorted.
"Inseparable bond?" Aphellios's expression tightened, his muscles tensing with barely contained rage. It was a dangerous moment, and I knew I had to find a way to calm him down.
He raised his hand, dark energy crackling around it, ready to annihilate Felix where he stood. Without thinking, I stepped between them, my eyes locking with Aphellios's.
"Stop!" I cried, my voice echoing across the battlefield. "You will not harm him."
Aphellios's rage faltered confusion and hurt flashing in his eyes. "Why are you protecting this man, my love? He deserves nothing less than death."
"Felix has been my companion, my friend," I said, my voice firm. "He has his reasons, and I will not let you kill him."
The tension between us was palpable, a clash of wills that seemed to reverberate through the very air. Aphellios's eyes burned with a mixture of anger and desperation. "You protect him? After everything he has done?"
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. "I need answers, Aphellios. I need to know if what they said is true.”
"What did they say?" Aphellios questioned, his voice laced with danger. "And where is the bastard you confronted here? From the moonstone's energy, it's evident you have already won the battle. But I must know who dared to lay their hands on my love."
“Do you wish to hear?” I asked, ignoring Aphellios’s question. “Will you even tell me the truth?”
Aphellios frowned as he was startled by the sudden change in my demeanor. “Fiona,” he called my name, closing the gap between us. “Why are speaking like you no longer trust me? What did happen in the past few days for you to change so much?” he questioned,
“Did you really steal the soul of the second prince? Do you take wolf sacrifices?" I asked, not beating around the bush.
For a moment, Aphellios said nothing, his gaze piercing into mine. Then, slowly, he lowered his hand, the dark energy dissipating. "Did your companion say this to you?” Aphellios asked calmly.
“I stayed in the vampire kingdom,” I answered calmly. “There, I met the second prince who looked exactly like you.”
“And you heard all these there?” Aphellios asked again.
“Lysander told me those things. He wanted to use me to awaken the moonstone. I guess you can already assume whom did I fight here. However, I am not only relying on his words. Whatever Felix said wasn’t much different from Lysander,” I said, looking away. My heart ached as I kept interrogating Aphellios.
“Did you believe what they say?” Aphellios asked, his eyes not moving away from me.
“Not yet. Not until I hear the truth from you,” I answered.
“There is much you do not understand," Aphellios said, his voice heavy with a tinge of sorrow. "But I will not harm your companion, for your sake."
Relief washed over me, but it was tinged with the knowledge that our journey was far from over. There were still so many questions, and so many secrets. But for now, in this moment, we were together. And that was enough.
Aphellios's embrace tightened around me once more, and I allowed myself to lean into him, drawing strength from his presence. Whatever lay ahead, we would face it together. And perhaps, in time, we would find the answers we sought.
