Chapter 61 The Plan
Chapter 61 The Plan
Morning came slow and gray, the sky pressing low over the hostel like a lid on a pot, and I woke on the couch with Dorian's arm draped across my waist while his breath stayed warm against the back of my neck. The fire had burned down to ash, and the room was cold enough to see my own breath hanging in the air, so I didn't move right away, just lay there letting myself feel the weight of his arm and the quiet of the building and the absence of screaming or running or bleeding.
Dorian stirred behind me, his voice rough with sleep. "You're thinking too loud again."
I turned my head to look at him over my shoulder. "How do you always know when I'm thinking?"
"Because you stop breathing when you're worrying. You hold your breath like you're waiting for something bad to happen." He pulled me closer, his chin resting on my shoulder. "We have a deal to make with Verina."
"We don't have to decide right now." I pressed back against him, feeling the solid warmth of his chest against my spine.
"The council won't wait forever for an answer from us."
"The council can wait until we've had coffee. At the very least." I almost laughed when I said it.
Jenna appeared in the doorway, her hair a mess and her eyes still half-closed, one hand braced against the frame. "There's coffee in the kitchen. You two coming or what?"
Dorian grunted against my neck. "Coming."
The kitchen was warm, the smell of coffee cutting through the cold that had seeped in through the cracks overnight. Zoe stood at the counter pouring cups, her movements slow but steady. Mira sat at the table with a mug cradled between her palms, her eyes clear but distant, her hands still for the first time in weeks. Kael leaned against the wall with his cast propped on a chair, his face tight but not as pale as yesterday. Vance was already at the table with the grimoire open, his glasses sliding down his nose.
I took a seat and wrapped my hands around the mug, the heat seeping into my cold fingers. "We need to talk about Verina's offer before she comes back."
Kael snorted from his spot against the wall. "Offer? That was a threat wrapped in a smile and tied with a ribbon. She's not offering us anything, she's trying to buy us off."
Zoe set the pot down and sat next to Mira, her hand finding Mira's under the table. "She's not wrong about the bigger picture, though. If the council falls apart, hunters will come. They always do when the supernaturals start fighting among themselves."
Vance closed the grimoire and set it aside. "The council is already in the middle of falling apart. The Commander's territory is empty, and every faction is fighting for scraps of what he left behind. Verina is trying to get ahead of the chaos while she still can."
Dorian sat next to me, his knee pressing against mine under the table. "What do we actually get out of this alliance?"
Vance paused, his fingers drumming on the book's cover. "Protection. A seat at the table. A say in what happens to this city and the people in it. That's not nothing."
Kael shifted his weight, wincing as his cast bumped the wall behind him. "Or we could take the territory ourselves. Use what we know, use what we've already done. We killed the Commander, we took down Cross, we destroyed Raze. That's more than anyone else in this city has ever done."
The room went quiet, the only sound the crackling of the fire in the other room. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, waiting for something I didn't know how to give yet.
Jenna looked at Kael with her eyebrows raised. "You're serious about that?"
Kael shrugged with his good shoulder. "The Commander is dead and gone. Cross is human now. Raze is nothing but ash and memory. We're the ones who did all of that, not the council, not the hunters, not anyone else." He looked at me. "We could carve out our own space. Our own rules. We don't have to answer to anyone ever again."
I stared at my coffee, the dark surface rippling as my hands trembled slightly. "That's not what I want for us."
Mira spoke for the first time, her voice quiet but steady. "What do you want, Arya?"
I looked up at her across the table. "I want to stop running and hiding. I want a place that's ours, somewhere no one's hunting us or using us or trying to kill us every single day." I paused, letting the words sit. "I don't want to become like them. Like the Commander. Like the council."
Zoe reached across the table and touched my hand. "Then we don't have to be like them. We don't have to become anything we don't want to be."
Dorian's hand found my knee under the table. "So we tell Verina yes, but on our terms. Not hers."
Vance nodded slowly, his eyes thoughtful. "We draw up an agreement. Boundaries. Rules. A line she can't cross without consequences."
Kael pushed off from the wall and limped toward the table. "And if she crosses that line anyway?"
I looked at him, let him see the answer in my eyes. "Then we remind her what happens to people who try to cross us."
Jenna smirked, the first real smile I'd seen from her in days. "That's the Arya I remember."
The table felt different after that, lighter somehow, like we'd finally made a decision instead of just reacting to whatever was thrown at us. Dorian leaned into my side and pressed a kiss to my temple. "We could really make this work, you know. Build something real."
I turned my head to look at him, at his tired eyes and slow smile. "Yeah. I think we could."

The snow started falling again by the time we finished breakfast. I stood by the window, watching it settle on the parking lot, the same white blanket that had covered our tracks so many times before. Dorian came up behind me, his hands settling on my hips.
I didn't turn around. "Still thinking too loud?"
"Always." He kissed the back of my head, his lips warm against my hair. "We'll figure it all out. We always do."
I turned in his arms, facing him. "What if we don't this time? What if we make the wrong choice?"
He cupped my face in his hands. "Then we figure out how to fix it. That's what we do." He smiled, the same slow smile I'd fallen in love with. "That's what we've always done."
The door opened and Jenna walked in with her coat already buttoned up to her chin. "Verina's car is back in the parking lot. She's got a folder with her this time."
Kael limped to the window and looked out. "She's alone again. No guards, no backup."
Vance stood from the table. "Let her in. We're ready for her."
Verina stepped through the door a moment later, her expression calm and her coat dusted with fresh snow. She walked to the table without waiting for an invitation and set a thick folder down. "I drafted a formal agreement based on what we discussed yesterday. Take your time, read it carefully."
I opened the folder and scanned the pages, the language formal and precise. Protection. Non-aggression. A seat at the council's table for one representative of our group. I read it twice, then handed it to Vance.
He read through it silently, his finger tracing each line. "It's clean. No hidden clauses, no fine print traps."
Kael took the folder next and read it just as carefully. "It's too clean. What aren't you telling us, Verina?"
Verina spread her hands wide, palms open. "I want stability. You want safety. The terms are what they are and nothing more." She met my eyes. "I'm not your enemy, Arya. I don't want to be."
I held her gaze for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "We'll accept the deal. But we have conditions of our own."
She tilted her head. "Name them."
"First, the hostel is ours. No council interference, no council presence, no council oversight. Second, we're not joining the council. We're allies, not members, not servants. Third, if anyone from the council comes after us, the deal is off. And we will come for you personally."
Verina was quiet for a long moment, her face unreadable. Then she nodded. "Agreed to all three."
She extended her hand across the table. I took it.
The deal was done.

The snow kept falling outside the windows, but the hostel felt warmer than it had in months. We spent the evening in the living room with the fire crackling and the lights low. Zoe and Mira curled up on the couch together, Mira's head on Zoe's shoulder and both of them half-asleep. Kael was on the floor with his cast resting on a pillow, snoring softly despite his broken wrist. Vance was reading in his chair, his glasses sliding down his nose.
I sat by the window, watching the snow fall past the glass.
Dorian came and sat beside me, his hand finding mine. "It's finally quiet."
I turned to look at him. "It's finally peaceful."
He looked out at the snow with me. "I never really knew what that felt like. Quiet. Peaceful. Safe."
I leaned into his side, his arm coming around my shoulders. "You do now."
He pulled me closer, his lips brushing my hair. "Yeah. I do."
I looked around the room at the faces of the people I loved. We had survived everything that was thrown at us. We had won. And now, we could finally start living instead of just surviving.
