Chapter 122
Sabrina's tearful and plaintive words successfully drew everyone's attention to Charlotte.
Even Maurice began to hesitate.
Charlotte felt a tightness in her chest. "Sabrina, drop that act. It makes me sick just looking at it."
But Sabrina still wore that earnest, well-meaning expression. "Charlotte, you can say whatever you want about me, but you can't deceive Mr. Walker. Besides, Mr. Walker is kind-hearted. As long as you tell the truth, he'll definitely understand your feelings for Lynn and won't blame you."
Charlotte took a deep breath, suppressing the anger that was about to explode, and turned to Maurice. "Mr. Walker, please believe me. She deliberately stepped on the brooch and broke it, not me."
Sabrina's eyes filled with sorrow. "Charlotte, why won't you just admit it? You're really disappointing me."
She then turned to the others. "Everyone, you all know I majored in design and have always looked up to Lynn as my idol. So how could I deliberately step on and break Lynn's work?"
Hearing this, Maurice couldn't help but feel confused.
"Mr. Walker, her name is Sabrina. She's my wife Charlotte's sister." With these words, Alexander stepped firmly into the room.
Maurice was shocked by this revelation.
Knowing Lynn's situation, he immediately understood—so Sabrina was the illegitimate daughter from the Spencer Family who had successfully climbed her way up. No wonder the atmosphere between her and Charlotte was so strange.
It seemed this matter would be difficult to handle.
Alexander had already learned the whole story outside, so as soon as he entered, he walked straight to Charlotte's side. "Today is Mr. Walker's birthday. Don't make this too ugly."
Charlotte's head snapped up to look at him. "Alexander, what do you mean by that?"
Alexander's eyes were full of helplessness. "It's obvious what happened. Stop making a scene."
Quietly looking at this man she had loved for over ten years, Charlotte felt her heart turn ice-cold: "You're saying I broke the brooch? Where's the evidence? Or did you see it with your own eyes?"
Everyone here today was someone important in River City. Alexander wanted to quickly smooth things over to avoid disturbing Maurice's mood and save the Forbes Family's face.
So he swallowed his frustration and patiently tried to coax Charlotte. "What evidence is needed? You stay home all day and don't understand anything. But Sabrina is different from you. She majored in design and has seen countless collections. She knows the rule about not taking items out of their boxes without permission."
Charlotte just found it unbearably annoying and didn't want to hear another word of nonsense. "Where's the evidence? You think you can slander me with just empty words? Then I can also say that Sabrina deliberately broke the brooch because she resents my mother."
Alexander was exasperated. "Charlotte!"
"Charlotte, why must you be so aggressive?" The portly Quentin appeared.
He then turned to Maurice. "Mr. Walker, Sabrina is the young designer I mentioned to you, the one who graduated from Aurora College. With her professional standards, how could she do what Charlotte claims—deliberately stepping on and breaking a collectible?"
After affirming Sabrina, he turned back to Charlotte with a fake smile. "As for you, a housewife who doesn't understand anything, naturally you'd think all your mother's works should belong to you. So you'd carelessly take Lynn's work out of its box to play with it. I'm guessing that's right, isn't it?"
Charlotte sneered, "According to you, all Aurora College graduates are good people, while people like me who spend all day at home taking care of my husband and children are worthless, right? Then do you dare make another bet with me? If I didn't break the brooch, you'll slap yourself in front of everyone and apologize!"
For some reason, the mention of a bet made Quentin inexplicably hesitant. "A bet? That's not necessary, is it?"
"I think it's very necessary!"
Suddenly, Amanda Walker, Maurice's wife who had been standing to the side, stepped forward.
Seeing her, Quentin immediately put on a different face. "Mrs. Walker—"
But Amanda gave him a cold look. "Don't call me Mrs. Walker. Just call me a housewife. Because like Charlotte, I'm also someone who spends all day at home taking care of my husband and children—completely worthless."
Amanda was also an old friend of Lynn's.
She had just heard Maurice mention Charlotte giving him sleep-aid scented candles, and a couple days ago she'd run into Mrs. Howard, who told her what the Forbes Family had done to Charlotte. She'd long felt Charlotte deserved better.
Now seeing Alexander constantly favoring Sabrina without the slightest intention of defending Charlotte, she finally couldn't hold back anymore.
Seeing Amanda actually speak up for Charlotte, Alexander finally showed some anxiety. "Mrs. Walker, please let me explain."
When Amanda got tough, she gave face to no one. "I don't want to hear your explanation."
"Right now they each have their own story, and neither has evidence, yet as soon as you walked in, you decided Charlotte was the one who did wrong." Amanda gave Alexander a critical look: "People who don't know might think Sabrina is your wife."
Alexander never expected Amanda to publicly embarrass him and speak up for Charlotte.
But Amanda's words were logical and well-reasoned, and she was his elder—for a moment he couldn't think of how to refute her.
The people around them now also sensed something wasn't right.
Charlotte was clearly Alexander's wife, yet the person Alexander brought to the party was Sabrina. This was indeed quite thought-provoking.
As it happened, some people present had witnessed the entire scene at the auction that day, so they embellished the story and quietly shared it.
Soon, everyone's gazes toward Alexander became increasingly mocking, though out of respect for the Forbes Family's influence, they only whispered among themselves.
"Looks like Mrs. Walker is right—Sabrina's position in the Forbes Group is even higher than Mrs. Forbes's now."
"I also heard that Sabrina is currently living at the Forbes Family home."
"Really? That's way too blatant, isn't it? Aren't they afraid of what people will say?"
"Charlotte is so pitiful, working hard to manage everything for the Forbes Family, and her husband cheats on her—"
Hearing everyone's whispers, Sabrina looked completely indignant.
She glanced at Owen and secretly pushed him.
Taking the hint, Owen immediately shouted loudly. "I can prove it!"
Everyone's attention was instantly drawn to him.
They saw Owen point at Charlotte. "I saw it with my own eyes just now—it was Mom who dropped it on the ground!"
