Dark Realm 65
Brinley’s eyes popped open as the murmurs of the clan grew louder. In a hast, she threw on some clothes and then dashed out to investigate the commotion.
“Get your hands off of me.” Gabriella struggled against the men holding her in their grasp. “I’m not here for trouble. I need to see Brinley.”
Brinley stepped from the throng. “Wait. I know this girl. Why are you here?”
“Joy sent me.”
“Banshees are known liars.” Someone in the crowd yelled out.
Brinley held her hand in the air the way Pyramus had done many times before. The surrounding crowd quieted. “How do I know Joy sent you here?” Brinley asked.
“Joy summoned me and my sister. She begged me to find you and bring you back. Your watcher is ill. Joy says she needs you.”
Brinley glanced around. “Where is your sister?”
“Isabella says we are no longer sisters because I chose to find you. I hope you’re worth losing my kin over. Isabella is the only family I have… well, had.” Gabriella shrugged.
Brinley read the fear in the young banshee’s eyes. “I’m sorry for your loss.”
Gabriella remained silent.
“Let her go.” Brinley stepped closer to Gabriella. “Walk with me.”
Once far enough away from the others, Brinley asked, “What’s wrong with Herman?”
Gabriella didn’t answer Brinley’s question but asked a question of her own. “What’s going on here? Are you a gypsy leader or something?”
It was Brinley’s time to remain quiet. Brinley cleared her throat and then repeated. “What’s wrong with Herman?”
“It’s not just your watcher, it’s the whole damn town. The darkness grows with each day, gobbling up all the sources of light. Without you, we will all die.”
Brinley dropped her head.
“You need to come back with me. I told Joy I would find you and bring you back. We need to go.” Gabrielle pleaded.
“Okay, let’s go. I need to say goodbye first.”
“Okay great but we are on a deadline.” Gabriella insisted.
Brinley hurried over to whisper to Pyramus as the cawing of a black bird flew over the camp. Pyramus held Brinley in a loving hug, he placed a tender kiss on her forehead. Brinley smiled before turning from him to rejoin Gabriella. Together, the two women vanished in a whirlwind only to reappear in the catacombs.
