Chapter 97 That thing

Chapter 97 That thing
  Amara POV
The throne room has never felt this cold before. Not because of winter. Not because of the storm clawing against the mountains outside.
Because every person inside it can feel something terrible shifting beneath the world.
Sebastian stands beside the black stone throne with his arms crossed tightly over his chest, golden eyes fixed on Azriel like he expects the old man to transform into a monster at any second. Luther remains near the doors with one hand resting on the hilt of his sword, while Beta Jamie watches in sharp silence from the edge of the chamber.
  No one trusts him.
  Frankly, neither do I.
Yet somehow Azriel looks entirely unbothered by the hostility curling through the room. He simply studies the vaulted ceiling above us as servants rush to prepare the chamber for the elder council.
“This.. is the first king,” Sebastian says quietly to me, clearly unbelieving.
  “I know.”
  “You believe him?”
The question lodges somewhere ugly inside my chest.
  Do I?
  I glance toward Azriel.
  Yes. Yes I do.
  I nod my head.
The old king stands near the massive windows overlooking the cliffs, silver hair glowing faintly beneath torchlight while lightning flashes beyond the glass.
  Ancient.
  Calm.
  Patient.
Like someone who has already seen kingdoms rise and fall often enough that none of this surprises him anymore.
“You believe he intends peace?” He asks.
  “I don’t really know what I believe,” I admit.
  Sebastian’s jaw tightens.
“That thing claims to be the first king.”
Azriel sighs dramatically without turning around.
“Must you keep calling me a thing? It feels terribly rude after I walked all the way up those stairs.”
Luther looks deeply offended by the fact the old man has a sense of humor.
I won’t lie though, I thought it was kind of funny.
  Sebastian ignores him entirely.
  “If this is a trick…”
“It is not,” Azriel replies softly.
  Finally he turns toward us.
For the first time since entering the throne room, some of the warmth fades from his expression.
“I understand your distrust, Lycan king. You should distrust me.” His dark gaze sharpens slightly. “Men who survive as long as I have rarely remain harmless.”
The honesty of that somehow unsettles me more.
Heavy footsteps echo through the chamber moments later as the elders begin arriving.
One by one they enter beneath the towering archways.
Lycan elders dressed in dark ceremonial robes embroidered with silver thread.
Vampire nobles pale as bone beneath crimson silk.
Ancient wolves from old bloodlines carrying enough authority to silence entire rooms with a glance.
And finally three witches wrapped in gray cloaks, their expressions immediately hardening the moment they notice Azriel standing near the throne.
Fear flashes openly across one woman’s face.
  Interesting.
  They recognize him.
Whispers spread instantly through the chamber like wind through dead leaves.
  “That cannot be him.”
  “He was sealed.”
“The prophecy.. you’ve brought upon the end-”
“I knew that old crone Morvella was too power hungry. That’s why we linked it to her death. She would never get a taste of his power.”
“This is just fantastic! This girl will bring upon the end!”
Sebastian steps forward before panic fully erupts.
  “Enough.”
  Silence crashes down immediately.
The weight of his king command rolls through the room hard enough to make several younger wolves lower their eyes instinctively.
Sebastian gestures toward the center of the chamber where a large circular table has been prepared.
“We are here for answers,” he says coldly. “Nothing else.”
  Azriel inclines his head slightly.
Wise enough not to provoke the room further.
An elder vampire finally steps forward, thin fingers trembling faintly against his cane.
“You claim the queen carries blood from every kingdom.”
  “I do.” Azriel speaks.
  “That is impossible.”
Azriel rolls his eyes. “Many things once considered impossible existed before history became propaganda.”
The elder looks deeply unhappy with that answer.
One of the witches steps closer next, gray eyes fixed sharply on me.
“If the claim is true,” she says carefully, “there is an ancient method of confirmation.”
  Azriel nods once.
  “The five vessels.”
Murmurs ripple uneasily through the chamber.
  Sebastian looks toward the witch.
  “Explain.”
  She hesitates briefly before speaking.
“Each species was originally tied to a divine source during the First Realm.” Her gaze flicks toward Azriel almost unwillingly. “Blood carrying that lineage reacts to sacred remnants connected to each race.”
Servants begin moving immediately at Sebastian’s command.
  The room transforms quickly.
Five stone bowls are placed upon the circular table.
  Each filled with something different.
The first contains black earth gathered from deep beneath Lycan territory.
The second holds shimmering water from the fae rivers said to carry old magic.
The third contains silver ash blessed by witches centuries ago.
The fourth holds ancient vampire blood preserved from the first royal line.
  And the final bowl..
A piece I feel connected to quite deeply..
Inside rests a small jagged fragment of obsidian stone veined faintly with gold.
  Azriel notices my stare.
“The throne stone,” he says quietly. “From the original kingdom.”
  The chamber grows still.
Even the fire seems quieter now.
Sebastian moves beside me as a ceremonial blade is brought forward.
“You do not have to do this,” he murmurs.
  I look around the room.
At the elders watching me with fear already blooming in their eyes.
At the witches gripping their staffs tightly.
At Azriel standing silent beneath flickering torchlight.
Then I look back at Sebastian.
  “Yes,” I say softly.
  “I do.”
The blade is colder than expected against my palm.
I drag it across my skin carefully.
  Pain flashes sharp and immediate.
Blood wells instantly across my hand before dripping slowly into the first bowl.
  The earth reacts immediately.
The black soil trembles violently before silver vines burst upward from the dirt, twisting around the bowl like living roots.
  Gasps echo across the chamber.
  “Lycan blood,” one elder whispers.
I move to the second bowl.
  Another drop falls.
Nothing happens for a few moments, but then the water begins to glow.
  Not faintly.
  Brilliantly.
Soft golden light spreads through the liquid while tiny glowing flowers bloom across its surface before dissolving back into stardust.
  The fae queen’s mark.
Fear sharpens visibly throughout the room now.
  The third bowl waits silently.
  Witch ash.
I force myself forward and let another drop fall.
For one terrible second nothing happens.
  Then the ashes rise.
  Not blown upward.
  Lifted.
Gray particles swirl into the air around my hand before forming glowing runes that circle my wrist like living sigils.
  Several witches recoil immediately.
  One actually stumbles backward.
  “No,” she breathes.
  The fourth bowl waits.
  Ancient vampire blood.
My pulse pounds harder now. I know I am in fact a vampire.
Another crimson drop falls into the dark liquid.
  The reaction is immediate.
The blood hisses violently before igniting into deep crimson flame.
  Not burning.
  Alive.
Power floods outward sharply enough to extinguish half the torches in the chamber.
  Darkness crashes across the room.
  Someone curses under their breath.
  Then comes the final bowl.
  The throne stone.
Every instinct inside me screams now.
  Do not touch it.
  Do not finish this.
  Because once I do…
Nothing will ever be normal again.
Sebastian reaches for my wrist gently.
  “Amara.”
  I look at him.
Fear lives in his eyes now too.
  Not fear of me.
  Fear for me.
  That somehow hurts worse.
Azriel’s voice breaks softly through the silence.
  “You already know the truth.”
  I swallow hard.
Then let the final drop fall.
  The obsidian stone cracks instantly.
Golden light erupts violently from inside it.
  Upward.
A massive pillar of shimmering power explodes toward the ceiling, flooding the throne room in ancient magic so overwhelming the very walls begin shaking beneath it.
  Every bowl ignites at once.
  The earth vines bloom.
  The water shines.
  The ashes spin.
  The blood burns.
And deep within the center of the golden light..
  A crown appears.
  A golden crown.
  Ancient and radiant and terrible.
  Floating directly above my head.
  The chamber erupts into chaos.
Several elders immediately drop to one knee.
Others recoil backward in outright horror.
One vampire noble makes the sign of the old gods beneath his breath.
The witches look seconds away from fleeing entirely.
Sebastian stares at me like he no longer recognizes what he’s seeing.
  And Azriel..
  Azriel looks proud.
  Not triumphant.
  Not cruel.
  Just proud.
Like a man watching history finally remember itself.
The crown lowers onto my head, taking over the previous one I wore moments later.
  The light vanishes.
Silence crashes through the room so heavily I can hear my own breathing.
“No,” one elder whispers shakily. “This cannot happen again.”
“She carries all bloodlines,” another says.
  “A true royal.”
  “The throne right..”
  “She could claim every kingdom.”
  “I don’t want to,” I say immediately.
My voice cuts through the panic sharply.
  Everyone turns toward me.
“I do not want anyone’s throne.”
  The room remains deathly still.
“I don’t want war,” I continue. “I don’t want kingdoms tearing themselves apart because of me.” My chest tightens painfully. “I just want peace.”
The words echo softly beneath the vaulted ceilings.
  Azriel watches me carefully.
  Then nods once.
  “As she should.”
One of the witches steps forward slowly.
  Face pale.
  Hands shaking.
“If the blood right is genuine..” She swallows hard. “Then every ruler must be informed.”
  Sebastian’s jaw tightens instantly.
  “That will cause panic.”
“It will cause outrage,” another elder corrects darkly.
“The vampire court will never allow this.”
“He is my father. He will not seek war.” I spill.
“The fae queen will see it as a threat.”
“And the covens..” one witch murmurs weakly.
Azriel folds his hands behind his back.
  “The truth rarely arrives conveniently.”
  Thunder shakes the mountain outside.
  Then Sebastian speaks.
  “We call them.”
  Every eye shifts toward him.
“The rulers come here,” he says firmly. “No armies. No councils. No threats.” His gaze hardens. “We settle this before the kingdoms burn themselves down with rumors.”
  No one argues.
Because they all know he’s right.
Servants move immediately after the order is given.
  Ink.
  Wax.
  Royal seals.
Letters spread across the great table while scribes begin writing under the nervous supervision of the elders.
One message to the fae queen.
  One to my father.
One to the witch leader residing beyond supernatural borders in human territory.
And one final notice sealed beneath Sebastian’s crest and marked with words none of them ever expected to write again.
  Summons to the unified throne.
The storm rages harder outside as black ravens are carried toward the windows.
I stare at the letters while dread settles slowly into my bones.
Because the moment those messages leave this castle..
  The world changes forever.
