Zeph’s POV
I blinked awake, my mind feeling so exhausted. Parties are not really my thing. I looked around and saw that Terran wasn’t in his room. Where did he sleep then?
I held my head, as I felt a little dizzy. I had a dream, about the war that happened on my pack, but I saw someone’s face that shocked me the most. I tried to recall the face, but I just couldn’t remember.
I extended my arms and stretched, and made my way to the door. As I opened the door, I saw Karex, who was about to enter, but froze when she saw me.
“What the hell are you doing here?” she snapped. I gave her a slow, amused smile.
“What do you think?”
Her eyes widened. “You-you spent the night here?”
I shrugged. “Looks like it.”
She looked like she might blow up any second.
“Stay away from Terran. He belongs to me.”
"Oh? That’s funny," I mused, crossing my arms. "Because I don’t recall seeing his name stamped on your forehead."
Karex’s lip curled. "He will claim me soon.”
I raised a brow, barely holding back my laughter. "Wow. You sound so sure of yourself. Did the moon goddess whisper this prophecy in your ear, or are you just making things up as you go?"
“I am the most eligible to be the Luna of the pack. My father is the main biggest reason why the pack has become stronger than ever. It’s only a matter of time before they make it official,” she stepped closer, “So if you think you ae going to have him, you think wrong. Even though he sleeps with you, you will only remain a mistress.”
I tilted my head, feigning curiosity. "Huh? That’s interesting. Because last I checked, he hasn’t claimed anyone yet. Which means you’re about as official as a rejected mate."
Her nostrils flared. "You—!"
I cut her off. "You should really pace yourself, Karex. All this anger first thing in the morning? Wrinkles are a real thing, you know."
“Count yourself lucky my plan didn’t work last night.” She said with a voice that I think she wanted to use to scare me. Pity. I will no longer be someone anyone will take for granted.
“You may be right. I was lucky. After all, Terran saved me himself. The man that is ‘clearly’ yours”
She squeezed her fists and her nails pressed inside her palms. "You think you’re so clever, don’t you?" she hissed.
I tapped my chin. "Not think. I know."
Karex inhaled sharply, her nostrils flaring. "Enjoy this moment while it lasts, Zeph. Because soon, Terran and Vixxen will realize exactly what you are—just a worthless outsider playing in a pack that doesn’t belong to you. And when they do, you’ll be all alone."
“I have to let you dream. Now, if you will excuse me, I actually have a life to live.”
I brushed past her before she could say another word. I have other important things to do than talk to someone that is clearly delusional. I made my way to my room and paused the moment I stepped inside.
Vixxen was sitting on the side of my bed, casually flipping through the book I got from the library.
He looked up to meet my gaze, something flickered in his expression, but I didn’t understand what it was.
“I came looking for you last night,” he said as he stood up. “But you were nowhere to be found…that is …until Terran told me what happened.”
Oh. I know Terran would have blamed him. I can’t imagine what their conversation was. But from the look on his face, it wasn’t good.
“It was not your fault. And besides, you were right about getting to know the pack members. I met one that has a similar likeness to mine.”
“And here I thought you were one of a kind.”
I chucked, “I thought the same.”
“I was just looking through the book. How do you even understand the writing?”
“The book belongs to my pack. Where I actually came from. Only the people from the pack could understand the writing.”
Vixxen raised an eyebrow, flipping through the pages again. “So, let me get this straight. Your old pack had their own secret language? Your pack is really cryptic and dramatic.”
I let out a small laugh. “Maybe they are.”
Vixxen tapped the book. “Alright, enlighten me, oh dramatic one. What does it say?”
“It’s an ancient recipe that gives people some common natural sense. You are desperately in need for it. I will go to the skies and heavens to get the ingredients and save you,” I said dramatically.
“Such kindness! Such sacrifice! Truly, I am unworthy of your heroic deeds.”
“Of course you should. I will endure the harsh territories to recover your sanity.”
“Well, while you’re up there gathering the spices, grab me a snack, will you?”
I rolled my eyes. “Sure. Would you like some berries of sense or a touch of wisdom?”
“Surprise me.”
We laughed.
“Ready to continue your training?”
“Why won’t I be? Let me just have my bath and get dressed.” I said while I dragged him out.
“Cmon, I won’t sneak a peek,” he whined.
“Like I would believe you.”
I closed the door and went to the bathroom. That dream still disturbs me, and I hope to remember everything in it. I wonder if I could use that power again. I don’t know how, but I can try imagining thinking of hearing someone’s thoughts.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, focusing on the sound outside the door. If this power really worked, I should be able to hear something—anything.
At first, there was only silence. Then, like a faint whisper in my mind, a voice came through.
Damn, she really is beautiful…
My eyes snapped open. That was Vixxen’s voice.
And sexy as hell. If on
ly I had walked a little slower, maybe I could’ve caught a glimpse…
I nearly choked on air.
