Chapter 4 Nightmare Visions of Marching Boots
The nightmare announced itself with sound.
Not a scream. Not the crash of thunder or the shriek of monsters.
Boots.
Measured. Unrelenting. Leather striking stone in perfect unison.
Clara dreamed of snow at first, white and endless, drifting lazily beneath a moon carved from bone. The palace loomed ahead, familiar in the way scars were familiar. Towers of ice and velvet shadow. Windows lit from within by a glow too warm to be honest.
Then the sound began.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
The snow shuddered with each step, trembling like a living thing beneath her feet. Clara turned, skirts tangling around frozen ankles, heart pounding as the horizon darkened.
They came in ranks.
Wooden soldiers by the hundreds, their painted faces cracked and expressionless, mouths fixed in identical red smiles that never softened. Their eyes glinted with something that wasn’t varnish or magic but intent. Each soldier carried a rifle etched with runes she hadn’t taught them, symbols burned deep into lacquered hands.
At their head marched the Nutcracker King.
Not her Nutcracker.
This one towered taller, shoulders squared with military precision. His jaw was carved sharper, harsher. His uniform was black instead of red, medals nailed into his chest like sins proudly worn. Where his heart should have glowed with warm magic, there was only a hollow cavity, frost spiraling endlessly inside.
His boots struck the ground louder than the rest.
Thud.
The sound crawled into Clara’s bones.
“Your Majesty,” he called, voice echoing as though spoken from the depths of a crypt. “You are late to your coronation.”
“I already wear the crown,” Clara said, though her throat tightened around the lie. She reached for the power bound to her spine, for the pulse of winter she commanded..
Nothing answered.
The soldiers raised their rifles as one.
“No,” she whispered, stepping back. The snow behind her hardened, forming a wall of jagged ice, trapping her between their advance and the palace gates.
The Nutcracker King lifted a gloved hand.
“March.”
The boots struck again.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
And then.
Clara woke with a gasp, lungs burning, hands clawing at silk sheets soaked in cold sweat.
The sound lingered.
Not in her ears.
In the walls.
She shoved herself upright, mattress creaking beneath her, heart racing as she strained to listen. Moonlight filtered through the tall windows of her chamber, scattering pale silver across carved wood and frost-laced stone. The palace slept, but it was not silent.
Far below, beneath layers of enchanted marble and frozen earth, something moved.
Marching.
She pressed her palm to her chest where the Queen’s sigil lay hidden beneath skin and silk. The mark pulsed faintly, unevenly, like a heart out of rhythm.
“They’re dreaming too,” she murmured.
That was the curse’s cruelest trick. The Nutcracker magic did not stop at wood and steel. It seeped into minds, twisted loyalty into obedience, turned dreams into commands.
If the soldiers were dreaming of marching, soon they would.
A knock echoed at the chamber door, sharp, urgent, out of place at this hour.
Clara was on her feet instantly.
“Enter.”
The door opened without ceremony. Elias stepped inside, dark hair disheveled, coat thrown hastily over sleep-clothes, blade already strapped at his side. His eyes, sharp and too old for his face, flicked to her bare feet on the floor, the frost creeping faintly around them.
“You heard it too,” she said.
He nodded once. “Three patrols just… moved. No orders. No bells. They fell into formation like they’ve been waiting their whole lives.”
Her stomach twisted. “The curse is accelerating.”
Elias crossed the room, stopping just short of touching her, a habit born of fear or reverence, she wasn’t sure which. “You dreamed of him again.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.” Her fingers curled into her sleeves. “But this time he led them.”
Silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken truths.
“There’s something else,” Elias said finally. “The old armory.”
She looked up sharply. “What about it?”
“The seals are failing. The wooden regiments, the ones we never activated, are responding to something. A signal. The archivists say it feels like… inevitability.”
Clara turned toward the window, staring out across the moonlit courtyard where statues stood frozen mid-salute. Once, they had been men. Once, they had sworn loyalty with full hearts.
Once, she thanked them for it.
“This is my fault,” she said quietly.
“Everything here is bound to you,” Elias replied. “Blame and responsibility are not the same.”
She laughed bitterly. “That’s easy to say when you don’t wear the crown.”
“No,” he said softly. “But I stand beneath it.”
A distant horn sounded then, low, wooden, warped by magic and distance.
Both of them froze.
“That isn’t ours,” Elias muttered.
“No,” Clara agreed, dreading curling like ice in her veins. “That’s a rally call.”
Another horn answered it. Then another.
From different wings of the palace.
From underground corridors long sealed.
The palace was waking.
Clara closed her eyes and reached deep, past fear, past guilt, into the cold vastness of her magic. Frost crawled up the pillars, racing through veins of stone like silver lightning. Chandeliers rattled. The air sharpened.
She opened her eyes glowing pale blue.
“They won’t march tonight,” she said, voice steady despite the storm inside her. “I will not allow it.”
Elias watched her with something like awe and something like sorrow. “And tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow,” she said, lifting her chin as the crown’s weight settled invisibly on her head, “we confront the part of this curse I buried instead of destroying.”
The horns fell silent.
But far below the palace, boots still whispered against stone, measured, patient, waiting for the command that would one day come.
And somewhere in the dark, the Nutcracker King smiled, already dreaming of the moment she would have no choice but to march with him.
Clara’s breath fogged the frozen air as the palace settled once more into uneasy stillness. The magic she summoned retreated reluctantly, like a beast leashed too tight, leaving her bones aching with the weight of restraint. Far beneath her feet, the whispers did not stop and, they synchronized. Thought aligning with thought. Wood remembering how to obey.
She suddenly understood the true horror.
The curse was not building an army.
It was remembering one.
Somewhere beyond nightmare and waking, a crown waited to be reclaimed, and this time, it would not ask for her consent.
