Chapter 50 The Dark Awakening

Chapter 50 The Dark Awakening
Dawn crept slowly over the Sacred Grove. A shy, hesitant light stretching across the horizon as though even the sun understood the weight of what was about to happen.

A cold breeze slipped through the ancient trees. Stirring their heavy branches. The scent of pine and damp earth mingled with something sharper. Tension so thick, so metallic, Amanda could almost taste it on her tongue.

Wolves from every allied pack crowded the clearing. Forming a wide ring around the combat grounds. Their fur bristled. Breaths coming in frosty clouds as they murmured to one another in low, uncertain tones.

Everyone had heard of challenges. But few had witnessed one in their lifetime.

Amanda stood near the front of the crowd. Heart pounding so violently she felt it tremble all the way to her fingertips.

Her boots sank slightly into the wet grass. Dew soaking through the edges and chilling her ankles. But she barely noticed the cold. All she could see, her entire world, stood at the center of the clearing.

Derek.

He stepped into the circle with steady, controlled movements. Though she knew him well enough to see the tension in the line of his shoulders. His jaw was set. Sharp with resolve.

The silver in his eyes gleamed brighter than usual. As if reflecting the rising sun. Burning with a determination that lit something deep inside her. He wore only loose, dark fighting trousers. His chest was bare. Muscles tense. Old scars catching the pale light like silver strokes of war paint.

Across the circle, Konstantin entered.

If Derek's presence was a gathering storm, then Konstantin's was an avalanche. Slow. Inevitable. Crushing.

His massive shoulders looked carved from granite. His thick arms corded with muscle. His eyes held a chilling hardness. The kind that spoke of untold battles won and countless risks survived.

His age seemed to sharpen him rather than weaken him. There was a ruthless wisdom in the way he moved. Each step heavy with a warrior's certainty.

Wolves instinctively pressed back as he passed. Fear rippling through the crowd like wind sweeping through tall grass.

Amanda's breath stalled in her chest. Derek looked strong. Gods, he looked strong. But Konstantin looked unstoppable. Unshakable. A mountain of violence and experience.

Elder Marwick stepped between them. His long robes brushing the ground as he planted his staff firmly into the earth. "This is a sanctioned trial by combat. Fight until submission. Fight with honor."

His gaze lingered on Konstantin for a moment longer than necessary. As though reminding him of rules he already intended to twist.

"Begin when the sun touches the stone."

He pointed to the tall standing stone at the eastern edge of the Grove. The golden light crept closer to it inch by inch. The anticipation in the clearing thickened like fog.

Amanda twisted her fingers together. Unable to keep still. Derek glanced at her from across the circle. Their eyes met. His steady and grounding. Hers trembling with fear.

He mouthed, I'm here.

The words steadied her.

She released a shaky breath.

Then the sunlight touched the stone.

Konstantin shifted instantly.

The air cracked. Split open by the violent sound of bones breaking and reforming. His body twisted. Expanding. Muscles tearing and knitting into something larger.

Fur erupted across his skin. Dark and ragged. A hulking, scarred wolf slammed onto all fours. Easily twice the size of any ordinary Alpha wolf. The growl that rumbled from his chest rolled through the Grove like thunder shaking the earth.

Gasps burst through the crowd.

A heartbeat later, Derek shifted.

Silver light washed over him. Wrapping around his body like liquid moonlight. His wolf form landed with grace. Tall, lean, powerful. His fur shimmered like starlit frost. Each strand reflecting the rising sun. He wasn't as massive as Konstantin, but he had something else. Something bright. Unyielding.

Amanda felt it through the bond like a spark racing through her veins. Determination. Love. A quiet fire that refused to be extinguished.

Marwick dropped his staff.

The fight began.

Konstantin lunged first. A blur of muscle and fury. Derek barely dodged. Rolling through the dirt before springing to his feet. But the ancient Alpha was already on him. Claws slashed across Derek's shoulder. A sharp spray of blood arced through the air.

Amanda flinched so hard her knees nearly buckled.

Derek regained his footing. Launching forward with a snarl. Teeth snapping into Konstantin's shoulder. The massive wolf snarled. Twisting sharply. With brutal strength, he flung Derek aside like a rag doll.

Konstantin fought with the savagery of a creature who had lived through a thousand wars. Every movement was controlled. Practiced. His scars weren't marks of defeat. They were trophies. Lessons earned the hard way.

Derek fought differently.

He fought with purpose.

With heart.

He dodged another swipe and struck hard. Ramming his shoulder into Konstantin's ribs. They tumbled across the dirt. Snarling. Claws ripping up chunks of earth. For a moment, just a moment, Derek had the upper hand.

Then Konstantin's jaws clamped onto Derek's flank.

Derek's howl tore through Amanda's soul.

"Derek!" She cried. Trying to surge forward. But strong hands clamped around her arms. Marwick. Elder Helen. Two warriors. Holding her back.

"You cannot interfere." Helen whispered. Voice taut with sympathy.

Amanda's vision wavered with panic. Derek stumbled. Blood streaming down his side. Konstantin stalked him like a predator savoring the final moments before the kill.

He's too strong...

Derek... please...

Konstantin lunged again. Derek dodged, but not fast enough. Claws grazed his chest. Splattering fresh blood. The younger Alpha slid across the dirt. Panting. Weakening.

That was when Amanda's birthmark burned.

A hot, searing pulse spread across her skin. Like fire under her flesh. Her knees wobbled. The world tilted.

Then the bond snapped open. Blazing to life with the force of a lightning strike.

Derek's emotions crashed into her. Pain. Determination. The fierce love he held for her. The fear of losing her.

Amanda pressed a trembling hand over her heart.

"I'm here," she whispered.

The bond tightened.

Derek staggered, but he whipped his head toward her. His silver eyes locked onto hers. Amanda felt something ancient rise inside her. Wide, wild, and powerful. Her gift, the ability coiled in her blood, surged upward like a tide breaking free.

She didn't know how she reached for him.

She only knew that she did.

Silver light flickered at her fingertips. Visible only to Derek. She poured her strength. Her will. Her love through the bond. Into him.

Derek's wolf shuddered.

Then he rose.

Slowly at first, then fully. Bigger. Brighter. Glowing with ethereal silver light. Gasps rippled across the crowd. Even Konstantin paused. Confusion flashing in his golden eyes.

Derek's eyes blazed like twin stars.

Amanda felt the power drain from her, but she didn't stop.

Derek roared. A sound that shook the trees to their roots. And launched himself at Konstantin.

This time, the ancient Alpha was too slow.

Derek slammed into him with explosive force. Knocking the giant wolf off his feet. They crashed into the dirt. Snarling and rolling. Derek pinned him with strength that shouldn't have been possible.

Konstantin fought like a demon. But Derek fought like destiny.

With a final, brutal surge, Derek forced him down. His teeth closed just over Konstantin's exposed throat. Close enough to kill, but not breaking the skin.

Konstantin's body stilled.

A heartbeat of silence.

Then the massive wolf lowered his head.

Submission.

A roar erupted through the clearing. Wolves howling. Warriors shouting. The ground itself seemed to vibrate with the force of it.

Derek stepped back. Shifting in a burst of silver light. His human body reappeared. Bleeding, bruised, trembling. But standing tall.

"It's done." His voice was hoarse but steady. He faced the crowd. "Amanda is mine. I am hers. Does anyone else wish to challenge this?"

Silence dropped like a stone.

Even Agatha lowered her head.

Marwick stepped forward. Raising his staff. "The Council recognizes Derek Livingston as Alpha of Nightfang and Amanda Kingswell as his true Luna. The archaic challenge laws are hereby abolished."

Howls exploded across the Grove. Wolves pounded their chests. Relief, unity, and triumph rippled like wildfire.

Amanda moved without thinking. Running into Derek's arms. He pulled her close despite his pain. She cupped his cheek gently. Tears burning her eyes.

"You did it," she whispered.

"For us," he murmured.

Marwick gestured for them to step toward the center for the binding ceremony. Derek wrapped an arm around Amanda's waist. Guiding her carefully.

But behind them, something shifted.

A deep, vibrating rumble moved through the earth.

Konstantin.

He rose shakily, though he had already submitted. His eyes were wrong. Dark. Wild. Unfocused. Shadows coiled around his body like smoke curling from burning wood.

"Fools..." His voice sounded doubled. Layered with something monstrous. "This was never about tradition."

Dark energy burst from his skin. Twisting his form into something grotesque. His eyes burned red. Unnatural. Unholy.

Amanda froze.

Derek stepped in front of her.

Konstantin's mouth opened, but a different voice spoke. A voice old enough to sound like cracked stone.

"The ancient enemy has awakened, and you've all been dancing to its tune."

His body convulsed violently.

Then exploded outward in a burst of black energy.

Screams. Gasps. Wolves shielding their faces.

Konstantin's body collapsed. Lifeless.

Silence smothered the clearing.

Elder Moira's hand flew to her mouth. Trembling so hard her rings clicked against her teeth.

Her voice cracked as she whispered the words no one had dared speak for centuries.

"The Nightbringer... the ancient enemy... has returned.”
