Chapter 84 Breach of Reality
The first scream came from the eastern wall.
Not human.
Not wolf.
It tore through the Council Hall like a blade. Sharp enough to make stone vibrate and magic recoil. The air split open with a sound like glass cracking under pressure. Something clawed its way through.
Then another.
And another.
The space above the chamber rippled. Folding in on itself as if reality had forgotten its own shape. Pale light spilled through the fractures. Carrying with it a cold that wasn't cold at all. But absence. A hollowing chill that drained warmth, sound, and sense all at once.
Creatures poured through.
Not born of flesh alone.
Some resembled wolves. Massive. Skeletal shapes wrapped in silver mist. Eyes glowing with fractured light. Others had too many limbs. Bodies half-formed. Edges blurring like unfinished thoughts. There were beings made of shadow and sparks. Of drifting runes and raw magic barely held together.
The Spirit Realm had torn open.
And it was bleeding into theirs.
"Form ranks!" someone shouted.
Too late.
The first nightmare wolf slammed into an enforcer. Sending him skidding across the stone floor. Another creature, long and serpentine, stitched together with glowing sigils, lashed out. Its scream shattering nearby torches.
Chaos exploded.
Wolves shifted mid-run. Fur and bone tearing free as instincts took over. Magic cracked and flared wildly. Uncontrolled and desperate. The Council Hall, once a place of judgment and cold order, became a battlefield.
Derek moved without thinking.
Silver light erupted from his skin as his wolf surged forward. No longer contained. No longer restrained. He shifted in a flash of power. Landing hard on all fours before launching himself at the nearest threat.
Claws met mist.
The impact sent shockwaves through the floor.
The nightmare wolf recoiled. Shrieking. Its form destabilizing where Derek's claws tore through it. Not blood spilling, but fragments of magic unraveling.
Around him, wolves fought creatures they didn't understand. Striking at bodies that didn't obey the rules of flesh. Some attacks passed straight through. Leaving fighters stunned and exposed.
"Amanda!"
Her name tore from Derek's chest as he pivoted.
She stood her ground near the dais. Eyes wide but focused. Power already rising beneath her skin. Her birthmark burned bright. Threads of pale light spidering across her arms as she lifted her hands instinctively.
A creature lunged toward her. Tall. Faceless. Its body a storm of broken runes.
Derek was there in a heartbeat.
He hit it mid-air. Slamming it into the far wall. Stone cracked. The creature screamed. Not in pain, but confusion. Before dissolving into sparks.
Amanda met his gaze.
Still here.
Still standing.
Heat surged between them, shared resolve snapping into place.
But the breaches kept opening.
Along the ceiling. Near the doors. Even through the stone floor itself. Magic ripping seams where none should exist.
"There are too many!" Riley shouted. Fighting back a shadowed beast alongside Owen.
Julian stood near the elder benches. Blood streaking his temple as he struck at a creature that reformed every time it was hit.
"This is madness!" he snarled. "They just keep coming!"
Above it all, Solarius watched.
He hadn't moved.
Not to fight. Not to shield himself.
He stood untouched at the heart of the storm. Molten eyes tracking every clash, every scream, every death narrowly avoided.
"This," he said calmly. Voice carrying even through the chaos. "Is the result of imbalance."
Derek heard him even as he tore through another spirit-beast.
"This is the chaos your actions have wrought," Solarius continued. "The worlds are bleeding together."
Derek shifted back just long enough to snarl, "Then help us stop it!"
Solarius's gaze flicked to him.
"Can you?" he asked quietly.
The question landed heavier than any blow.
Amanda staggered as a wave of raw magic surged through the hall. Knocking several wolves off their feet. She caught herself on the dais. Breath sharp. Heart pounding.
Something clicked.
Not fear.
Understanding.
"These creatures," she gasped. Eyes tracking a spirit-wolf that circled aimlessly. Attacking anything that moved. "They're not evil."
Derek froze for half a heartbeat.
"What?"
"They're lost," Amanda said. Voice urgent now. "Pulled from their realm into ours. They don't belong here."
As if to prove her point, the spirit-wolf let out a fractured howl. Not rage, but distress.
Amanda stepped forward.
Several wolves shouted for her to stop, but she barely heard them.
"We don't need to destroy them," she said. Hands trembling as she lifted them again. "We need to send them home."
Her power shifted.
No longer sharp.
No longer defensive.
It softened. Spreading outward like a bridge instead of a blade.
Light spilled from her palms. Not blinding, but steady. Warm. Familiar.
The nearest spirit-creature stilled.
Its form wavered. Edges smoothing as the light wrapped around it. The violent thrashing slowed. Replaced by a low, uncertain hum.
A tear opened behind it.
Not jagged.
Not violent.
A doorway.
The creature hesitated. Then stepped through.
The tear sealed behind it with a quiet sigh.
The hall went still for half a second.
Then...
"Do it again!" someone shouted.
Amanda's knees buckled slightly, but she nodded. Teeth clenched.
Derek was at her side instantly. Shifting back to human form. One arm braced around her as he turned to face the next wave.
"Stay behind me," he growled.
"I need space," she said. Breath shaky but eyes fierce.
He gave it to her. Without leaving her unguarded.
Silver power flared around Derek as he planted himself in front of her. A living wall. Creatures crashed against him. Claws scraping. Magic burning. But he didn't yield.
Behind him, Amanda worked.
Each breath felt like fire in her lungs. Each portal tore a piece of strength from her core. Sweat soaked her hair. Light flickering erratically as she forced her gift wider. Deeper.
Other wolves began to follow her lead.
Riley stopped striking and started herding creatures toward the light.
Owen shouted warnings instead of orders.
Even Julian, bleeding, exhausted, lowered his weapon when he saw a spirit-child no older than a pup cowering near the benches. He stepped between it and a charging enforcer. Raising his hand.
"Don't," he said hoarsely. "She's helping them."
The enforcer hesitated.
Then nodded.
Together, they guided the creature toward Amanda's light.
Julian watched her then. Really watched her. Standing at the center of chaos. Breaking herself apart to save everyone.
Including him.
Something in his expression cracked.
Amanda screamed as the final breach widened. A massive tear ripping open above the dais. Pouring creatures through faster than she could guide them back.
"I can't," she gasped.
"Yes, you can," Derek said. Voice fierce with belief as he caught her when she swayed. "You're not alone."
She closed her eyes.
Reached deeper.
Past fear.
Past pain.
Past limits.
The light exploded outward. A massive portal blooming behind the dais. Vast and radiant. The Spirit Realm answered. Pulling its lost children home.
Creatures flowed back. One by one. Then dozens at a time.
The breaches sealed.
The screams faded.
Silence crashed down. Heavy and stunned.
Amanda collapsed.
Derek caught her before she hit the stone. Dropping to his knees with her cradled against his chest. The bond pulsed wildly between them. Fear. Relief. Love tangled together.
"I've got you," he whispered. Pressing his forehead to hers.
Her breath was shallow.
But she was alive.
Footsteps approached.
Solarius stood before them. Expression unreadable.
"Impressive," he said at last. "You chose protection over punishment."
His gaze sharpened.
"Harmony over dominance."
He extended his hand.
"The Old Ones have seen enough," Solarius said.
The air shifted.
"Come."
His eyes burned gold.
"The Nexus awaits.”
