Chapter 43 No Mercy Given
The world didn't wait.
The moment the mate bond locked into place, warm, radiant, and irrevocable, the test arrived. The one that had lingered unspoken at the edge of their hearts.
Amanda's fingers remained pressed against Derek's chest. The mate bond thrummed between them like a living thing. Every beat of his heart echoed in hers. Every breath he took filled her lungs with purpose.
She could feel him. Not just physically, but deeper. His exhaustion. His relief. His fierce, unrelenting love wrapping around her like armor.
And beneath it all, power. So much power.
It surged through her veins like wildfire. Her birthmark burned hot against her skin, but not with pain. With recognition. Her ancestral gift had awakened fully, amplified by the Alpha essence Derek had poured into her.
She was no longer the forgotten daughter. The overlooked girl who'd spent her life in shadows.
She was Luna.
Derek's hand tightened weakly on her arm. His voice was rough. Barely above a whisper. "Amanda."
"I'm here." She brushed his hair back from his forehead. Her touch gentle despite the power crackling beneath her skin. "I'm not going anywhere."
His eyes, still that brilliant silver, searched hers. A question lived there. One he didn't need to speak aloud.
Are you okay?
Through the bond, she sent him everything. Her strength. Her certainty. Her absolute refusal to let anything separate them again.
His shoulders relaxed. Just slightly. Enough that she knew he believed her.
Riley appeared at Amanda's side. Dropping to her knees. Tears streaked her face. "Luna, you're..."
"Alive." Amanda finished. She turned her head. Taking in the grove. The scattered warriors. The bodies of those who lay still surviving Silas's dark magic. And there, across the clearing, Lucian stood with Lena at his side.
Both wore expressions of pure shock.
Amanda rose slowly. Derek tried to stand with her, but she pressed a hand to his shoulder. "Rest. Just for a moment."
"Amanda..."
"Trust me."
Their eyes locked. The bond flared between them. After a heartbeat, Derek nodded. He stayed seated, but his wolf prowled just beneath his skin. Ready. Waiting.
Amanda turned fully toward Lucian.
The powerful Alpha of Emberfang looked smaller somehow. Diminished. His warriors had formed a loose circle around him, but their stances were uncertain. Several had weapons lowered. Others glanced between Amanda and their Alpha with obvious confusion.
Lucian's voice boomed across the grove. Desperate to reclaim authority. "This changes nothing! You're outnumbered! Nightfang is weak, and you're just..."
"Just what?" Amanda's voice cut through his like a blade. Clear. Unwavering. Backed by power that made the air itself vibrate. "Just the daughter you dismissed? The daughter you traded away like livestock?"
Lucian's jaw clenched. Lena shifted behind him. Her face pale.
Amanda took a step forward. Then another. The earth seemed to respond to her presence. The grove's ancient magic recognizing what she'd become.
"You betrayed your own daughter." Each word landed like a punch to the gut. "Conspired to destroy an allied pack. Ordered the binding of an Alpha's wolf. All for what? Power? Control?"
"I did what was necessary for Emberfang's survival!" Lucian's hands curled into fists. "Nightfang was weak. Vulnerable. It was only a matter of time before someone else struck first."
"So you decided to be that someone." Amanda stopped just outside the circle of Emberfang warriors. Her golden eyes swept over them. "Tell me, which of you knew about this? Which of you helped bind Derek's wolf three years ago?"
Silence. Heavy and damning.
One warrior, a young man Amanda recognized from her childhood, stepped back. His weapon clattered to the ground. "I didn't know, Luna. I swear it."
"Neither did I." Another voice. Then another.
Lucian's face reddened. "You fools! Stand your ground!"
"Against what?" The question came from Owen. He'd moved to stand beside Amanda. His stance was protective, but he didn't need to be. She radiated strength. "Against the moon's will? That's what this is, Alpha Lucian. The silver wolf has returned. The prophecy is fulfilled. You can't fight destiny."
"Prophecy." Lucian spat the word. "Convenient stories to justify their power grab."
"The Pack Council will hear of this." Amanda's voice rang with authority she'd never possessed before. Never been allowed to possess. "They'll know how you conspired with Silas. How you planned to weaken Nightfang. Murder their Alpha. Install a puppet in his place. How you promised my sister as Luna to a traitor."
Lena stood frozen. Her hand hovering near her father's arm but never quite touching. Her eyes, wide and panicked, flicked between Amanda and Lucian.
"It was strategy!" Lucian's voice carried annoyance. "Lena was always meant for greatness. Unlike you, a worthless sister."
The words should have hurt. Once, they would have shattered Amanda's carefully constructed walls. But now, with Derek's essence flowing through her veins and their mate bond singing with shared strength, they bounced off harmlessly.
"I was never worthless." Amanda's voice dropped lower. Quieter. Somehow more devastating because of it. "You just couldn't see my value. Couldn't see past your own ambition long enough to recognize what I could become."
Movement behind her. Derek rose, despite his exhaustion. He stood at her side. His presence completing something in her. Making her whole.
When he spoke, his voice carried the weight of legend. Of prophecy made flesh. "Anyone who stands against us stands against the moon's will."
His silver wolf flashed in his eyes. Power rolled off him in waves, even weakened as he was. Combined with Amanda's gift, their united strength was undeniable. Absolute.
"Choose wisely." Derek's words were soft. But every warrior in the grove heard them clearly.
For a long moment, no one moved. The tension stretched tight as a bowstring.
Then a warrior knelt. One of Lucian's. Her head bowed. Fist pressed to her heart. "I serve the true Alphas."
Another followed. Then three more. Within seconds, half of Emberfang's force had taken a knee before Derek and Amanda.
Lucian's face went purple with rage. "Traitors! All of you!"
"No." The warrior who'd knelt first looked up. Meeting her former Alpha's gaze without flinching. "We serve the pack's future. Not your ambition."
Elias strode forward from where he'd been watching. His massive frame seemed even larger. Fueled by fury. "Enough of this."
He pointed at Derek, then Amanda. "You want loyalty? Respect? Earn it through strength, not pretty words and parlor tricks."
Derek's hand found Amanda's. Their fingers intertwined. She felt his wolf surge forward. Felt his determination. His absolute refusal to back down.
"You want a challenge?" Derek's voice was pure Alpha. "I'll give you one."
Elias grinned. Brutal. Vicious. "Finally. A real fight."
He shifted mid-stride. His wolf burst forth. All dark fur and battle scars. Massive paws hit the earth hard enough to crack stone. His jaws snapped, displaying teeth like daggers.
Derek released Amanda's hand gently. Through their bond, she felt his reassurance. His love. His promise that this would end quickly.
Then he shifted.
The silver wolf emerged like moonlight given form. Larger than before. More powerful. The legendary Alpha of prophecy, fully realized. His coat gleamed, unmarred by scar or blemish. His eyes burned with ancient wisdom and modern fury.
Every warrior in the grove stopped breathing.
Elias charged. His wolf was experienced. Brutal. He'd won countless challenges through sheer size and savagery.
But Derek was something else entirely.
He met Elias's charge head-on. The impact shook the ground. Growls and snarls filled the air as they clashed. Teeth snapped. Claws raked. Blood flew.
It lasted less than a minute.
Derek moved like liquid silver. Where Elias relied on strength, Derek used speed and precision.Elias attacked wildly, Derek struck with surgical accuracy.
A feint to the left. A slash across Elias's shoulder. A bite to his hind leg that sent the larger wolf stumbling.
Amanda watched. Her heart in her throat despite knowing Derek would win.
Elias tried to rally. Lunged for Derek's throat in a last desperate attack.
Derek caught him mid-leap. His jaws closed around Elias's neck. They went down together.
When they hit the ground, Derek's wolf stood over Elias. Silver and colossal. His breath steaming in the morning air. Elias lay pinned beneath him. Bleeding, broken, throat exposed in total submission.
One bite. One movement of jaws. And it would all be over.
But then Amanda's voice slid into Derek's mind. Soft. Steady. Unshakable.
Show mercy. Prove you're better than them.
The silver wolf paused. Then, slowly, Derek stepped off.
Elias shifted back weakly. Collapsing to one knee. Eyes wild. His pride was shattered. The battlefield saw it.
Derek shifted too. Breath ragged but gaze sharp. When he spoke, his voice carried across the grove. Alpha command wrapped in steel.
"Elias Hale of Moonveil. You challenged my authority. You conspired with traitors against an allied pack. You put your own people at risk for power."
Elias flinched.
"By the law of shared territory and by blood right, you are no longer welcome as Alpha within Nightfang lands. I strip you of your title as Alpha of Moonveil pack. Leave this territory. You have no claim or voice under my leadership."
The grove fell silent.
Lucian's face went ashen. All his bravado, all his rage, had drained away. If Elias, brutal and seasoned, had fallen so easily, what hope did anyone else have?
