Chapter 98 Complete - Amelia’s POV

Chapter 98 Complete - Amelia’s POV
I reached the edge of the forest and let the borrowed robe fall from my shoulders, the cool night air caressing my bare skin. Behind me, I could hear Aleksandr's approaching footsteps, but my focus had narrowed to the pulsing energy inside me, to Kaela bounding joyfully through my consciousness with newfound freedom. The barrier hadn't disappeared entirely, I could still sense its presence, but it had transformed from an impenetrable wall to a gauzy curtain, something we could push through together if we tried hard enough. And we were definitely going to try.
'Now?' Kaela asked, her excitement making it difficult to form coherent thoughts. 'Can we try now?'
'Yes,' I answered silently, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath of forest air, pine, earth, and something wilder that called to something equally wild inside me. 'Come through, Kaela. I'm ready.'
Unlike our desperate attempts in the days following my rescue, this felt different. Natural. There was no strain, no sense of ramming against an immovable obstacle. Instead, it felt like extending my hand through water, reaching for something just beyond my grasp but drawing ever closer.
I felt Aleksandr stop a few paces away, giving me space while remaining close enough to intervene if needed. His concern washed over me through our newly strengthened bond, but beneath it lay something stronger, faith. He believed I could do this. Skoll believed Kaela could do this.
That certainty gave me the final push I needed. I opened myself completely, surrendering to the transformation that had eluded us for so long. Kaela surged forward with a howl of triumph that echoed through our shared mind, and suddenly we were merging, becoming one entity in a way that felt like coming home after a long, painful exile.
The shift itself was smoother than I remembered from that desperate night in the cell. My bones realigned without the searing pain I'd experienced before, my skin tingling rather than burning as thick black fur erupted across my body. I fell forward onto hands that were already becoming paws, my spine elongating, my face extending into a powerful muzzle filled with razor-sharp teeth.
And then it was done. I stood on four paws in the moonlight, my senses exploding with information my human form could never have processed. The forest was alive around me, every rustle of leaves, every scurrying creature, every subtle shift in the air currents registered with crystal clarity. Scents told stories my human nose would have missed entirely: a fox had passed through hours ago, a deer and her fawn were bedded down a hundred yards to the east, an owl watched from the branches above.
'We did it!' Kaela's joy mingled with my own until it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. 'We're whole again!'
I turned toward Aleksandr, seeing him with new eyes, wolf eyes. He stood motionless, his expression one of awe as he took in my transformed state. Slowly, he approached, hand outstretched.
"You're magnificent," he breathed, fingers sinking into the thick fur around my neck. "Even more beautiful than I remembered."
I leaned into his touch, a rumble of pleasure vibrating through my massive chest. His scent filled my nostrils, pine and cedar and male and mate, more complex and compelling than I could have imagined in human form.
"Kaela," he said, addressing my wolf directly as he stroked between my ears. "You're perfect."
Then he stepped back, shrugging out of his own robe. "My turn," he said, eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Skoll's been waiting for this moment for weeks."
His shift was quicker than mine, more practiced, a fluid transformation from man to beast that took mere seconds. Where Aleksandr had stood, Skoll now towered, a massive black wolf whose size dwarfed even my considerable form. His deep purple eyes locked with mine, filled with an emotion too complex for human words.
'Mate,' his voice rumbled through our bond, deeper than Aleksandr's but carrying the same underlying warmth. 'Finally together. As it should be.'
We circled each other slowly, relearning one another in these forms. I'd seen Skoll once before, in the forest during my failed attempt to shift, but this was different. Now we were equals, both in our true forms, both free to express the wild joy that bubbled up between us.
I bumped my muzzle against his, breathing in his scent, memorising it. He responded by running his tongue over the top of my head in a gesture that was half-grooming, half-affection. Then, without warning, he nipped playfully at my ear and bounded away, an unmistakable invitation to chase.
