Chapter 100 Whole - Amelia’s POV
I woke to the sensation of being completely surrounded - Aleksandr’s massive arm draped protectively across my waist, his body curved around mine like a living fortress, and most remarkably, Kaela’s presence flowing freely through my mind, no longer trapped behind that invisible wall. She stretched languidly in my consciousness, as physical as any movement of my own body, her joy vibrating between us like a purr. ‘Morning,’ she whispered, and I could feel her smugness at our proximity to Skoll, their energies mingling where our bodies touched.
‘We did it,’ I replied silently, still marvelling at the ease of our communication now. ‘We’re whole.’
‘Finally,’ she agreed, sending me flashes of our midnight run through the forest - the feel of earth beneath our paws, the scent trails we’d followed, the rabbit Skoll had caught for us. The memories were crisp, vivid, real in a way that made my heart swell with gratitude.
Aleksandr shifted behind me, his breath warming my neck where the mating mark throbbed gently. His lips pressed against it, sending a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with temperature.
“Good morning, mate,” he murmured, the word carrying a weight, a significance it hadn’t held before. Mate. Not just a term of endearment or designation, but a bond etched into our very souls. The mark on my neck was just the physical manifestation of something far deeper, something that hummed between us like a plucked string.
I turned in his arms, my fingers tracing the matching mark I‘d left on his neck. It had already healed into a raised scar, silvery against his tanned skin. “Good morning,” I whispered back, suddenly shy despite everything we’d shared.
His fingers tangled in my hair, tilting my face up for a kiss that started gentle but quickly deepened, igniting embers that had barely cooled from the night before. When he finally pulled away, his dark eyes had that purple gleam that meant Skoll was close to the surface.
“I could get used to waking up like this,” he said, voice rough with desire.
‘Tell him we need food,’ Kaela interjected, practical as always.
I laughed, the sound bubbling up from some newly uncovered wellspring of happiness. “Kaela says we need breakfast. Apparently shifting works up an appetite.”
Aleksandr‘s answering grin was boyish, transforming his usually severe features. “Skoll agrees. Food first, then...” His eyes raked over me with such heat that I felt myself flush. “Then perhaps another run?”
We dressed in companionable silence, stealing glances at each other like teenagers. I chose a simple blue dress that was easy to remove should we decide to shift again later, the thought sending a thrill through me. I could shift now. Whenever I wanted. The freedom of it still felt unreal.
Aleksandr’s hand found mine as we left our suite, his massive fingers enveloping my smaller ones. Guards nodded respectfully as we passed, their eyes lingering on our matching marks with poorly disguised curiosity. News would spread quickly - the Alpha King and Queen had completed their mating, both curses apparently broken.
The garden was bathed in morning sunlight when we arrived, dew still clinging to the grass where servants had set up our breakfast. The scents hit me differently now - sharper, more nuanced. I could distinguish the individual components in the coffee, the subtle variations in the pastries arranged on silver trays.
“Everything smells different,” I marvelled as we took our seats. “More... complete.”
Aleksandr nodded, understanding immediately. “Your senses are enhanced now that you and Kaela are properly connected. It will become second nature soon.”
I reached for a pastry, suddenly ravenous. Before I could take my first bite, Elder Nora appeared around the corner of the garden path, moving with that deliberate grace that made her seem both ancient and ageless.
“Well,” she said, approaching our table with a rare genuine smile. “It seems congratulations are in order.”
Aleksandr rose to pull out a chair for her, a gesture of respect that spoke volumes about their relationship. “Your advice was sound, as always,” he acknowledged.
Nora settled into the seat, accepting the cup of tea a servant poured for her with a nod of thanks. Her sharp eyes examined us both, taking in our matched marks with obvious satisfaction.
“How do you feel?” she asked, her gaze settling on me. “Both of you.”
I swallowed my bite of pastry before answering. “Complete,” I said simply, echoing what I’d told Skoll in the forest. “Kaela and I... we’re properly connected now. The barrier is gone.” I couldn’t keep the wonder from my voice as I described our midnight run, the exhilaration of shifting, the perfect synchronicity with which we’d moved through the forest alongside Skoll.
“And you?” Nora turned to Aleksandr.
“More stable than I’ve felt in months,” he admitted, his hand finding mine on the table. “Skoll is... content.”
Nora nodded, satisfaction evident in her expression. “The mating bond is ancient magic, more powerful than any curse. As long as it remains strong, you should both remain whole.”
She sipped her tea thoughtfully before adding, “Of course, now we need to arrange your coronation, Amelia.”
I froze, pastry halfway to my mouth, eyes widening. “My... what?”
“Coronation,” Nora repeated calmly. “You’re mated to the Alpha King. That makes you Queen in fact, but we need to make it official. The council will need to be informed, arrangements made.”
Panic flared in my chest, sudden and sharp. Queen. Not just in name or as some honorary title, but officially. Permanently. With a coronation and everything that entailed. I set down my pastry, appetite vanishing as quickly as it had come.
Aleksandr’s fingers tightened reassuringly around mine. “You’re already Queen in all but paperwork,” he said softly. “This just makes it official. Nothing changes between us.”
But it would change everything else. How people saw me, what they expected from me. The weight of an entire kingdom suddenly felt very real, pressing down on shoulders that had only just learned to stand straight.
“I don’t know the first thing about being queen,” I whispered, feeling blood drain from my face.
“You know how to be compassionate,” Aleksandr countered. “How to be strong in the face of cruelty. How to fight for what’s right.” His thumb traced circles on the back of my hand. “The rest is just protocol, and you’ll learn that easily enough.”
Nora set down her teacup with a decisive click. “The two of you will need to inform the council this morning,” she said. “They should hear of both the mating and the coronation plans directly from you.”
Aleksandr’s expression darkened, a scowl forming between his brows. I didn’t need to ask why - the council, with the exception of Nora herself, had made their disdain for me abundantly clear. The thought of facing them now, of watching their reactions to my permanent elevation to Queen, made my stomach twist with anxiety.
‘They can’t hurt us,’ Kaela reminded me, her presence a warm strength in my mind. ‘We’re stronger than they know.’
She was right, of course. I’d faced worse than disapproving councilors. I’d survived years of abuse, a kidnapping, near-death. I could survive this too. Especially with Aleksandr beside me, his hand in mine, our bond unbreakable between us.
I took a deep breath and nodded. “When?”
