Chapter 16 Chapter 16
Chapter 16 Chapter 16
Isla
I stood frozen in the doorway of my father's office, my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged bird desperate for escape. Before me, the Alpha King loomed, his face a terrifying mask of barely contained fury, his blue eyes darkening to a molten gold that betrayed the rage of his wolf. Behind him, I caught a glimpse of his Beta looking equally startled by my sudden appearance.
The weight of what I was about to do pressed down on me, making it hard to breathe. Less than fifteen minutes ago, I had with my family, the people who had protected me my entire life, slipped into the woods behind our home, their faces etched with determination and fear. The plan had been simple: escape together, find refuge with distant allies, start over somewhere the Alpha King's influence couldn't reach us.
But as I'd watched them gather supplies, plotting escape routes and contingency plans, a cold realisation had settled in my gut. There was no escaping Tristan Norththorn. I knew in my heart that the Alpha King would hunt us down even in another King’s territory. And if my family tried to help me flee, they would pay with their lives.
"I'm not running," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I will go with you, willingly. But only if you agree to my conditions first." The Alpha King's nostrils flared, his massive frame tensing like a predator about to strike. I forced myself to hold his gaze, though every instinct screamed at me to look away, to submit, to run. In that moment, he appeared more wolf than man, primal, dangerous, and utterly lethal.
"You," he growled, the single word vibrating with such rage that I had to lock my knees to prevent them from buckling. "You dare to stand before me and make demands?"
Before I could respond, he moved with inhuman speed. His hand shot out, wrapping around my upper arm, and I found myself being dragged into the office. The door slammed behind us with such force that picture frames rattled on the walls. My back hit the solid wall next to the door with a thud that knocked the breath from my lungs, and suddenly he was there, caging me in with his body, one hand planted on the wall beside my head, the other still gripping my arm.
From the corner of my eye, I saw the Beta hesitate. "Tristan, maybe you should- "
"Get out," he commanded, not looking away from me.
“All I am saying is-”
"NOW!" The Alpha King's roar made me flinch. The Beta cast me an apologetic glance before he slipped from the room, the door closing softly behind him.
And then we were alone.
His scent engulfed me, the woods, and something wilder, something that called to me on a level I couldn't comprehend, and yet it felt like home. It was like the scent was all-consuming, wrapping around me like a warm blanket. My family always spoke of scent being something different from standard smelling, but I didn’t really get it, until now. Heat radiated from his body, and despite everything, despite my fear, despite my anger, I felt my own body responding to his proximity in ways that terrified and confused me.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?" he hissed, his face inches from mine. "Your family tried to flee with my mate. That is a crime punishable by death. I should kill them all for their treachery. I should kill you." I swallowed hard, fighting back the tremor that threatened to overtake my voice.
"But you won't." His eyes widened slightly, clearly shocked by my audacity.
"You presume to know what I will and won't do?"
"I know you need me," I said, the words flowing with a confidence I didn't truly feel. "I don’t know why but whatever that reason is, it's important enough that you're demanding this of me despite what I am. Despite me being human." I took a deep breath. "That gives me some power here, doesn't it?"
His jaw tightened, and for a moment I thought he might strike me. Instead, he leaned closer, his breath hot against my ear.
"You think you have power here? Let me be very clear, little human. You have nothing. You are nothing but what I decide you are."
"Then why am I still breathing?" I challenged, my heart racing so fast I felt light-headed. "Why haven't you killed me yet?" He pulled back enough to lock eyes with me, and what I saw there made my stomach clench, anger, yes, but also hunger, a dark desire that seemed to burn from within.
"Do not test my patience. It wears thin enough already."
"My family was just trying to protect me," I said quickly, desperate to shift his attention. "I'm the one who came back. I'm the one standing here now. Punish me if you must, but please leave them out of it." The Alpha King's lips curved into a cruel smile.
"How noble. The little human, sacrificing herself for her pack." He released my arm, only to trace a finger along my jawline, the touch deceptively gentle. "Tell me, did you orchestrate this escape attempt? Was this your idea?" I forced myself to remain still, to not flinch away from his touch though it sent unwelcome shivers down my spine.
"No. When I realised what they were planning, I slipped away. I came back because I knew there was no point in running." His eyes narrowed, assessing me for lies.
"You expect me to believe you willingly returned to me?"
"Not to you," I clarified, my voice dropping. "For them. For my family." I took a shaky breath. "I know you're going to take me anyway. I know I don't have a choice in that. But I can choose how I go, kicking and screaming, or..." I trailed off, letting the implication hang in the air between us.
"Or what?" he prompted, his thumb now brushing across my lower lip in a gesture that was both threatening and intimate. I tried to ignore the warmth that bloomed low in my stomach at his touch.
"Or I can make this easier. For everyone. I'll go with you willingly. I'll... I'll do what you want. But only if you promise to leave my family alone."
"You'll do what I want regardless," he growled, but I could see I'd caught his interest.
"You can force my body to go wherever you want," I acknowledged. "But you can't force my compliance. You can't force me to be the willing mate you need me to be." I summoned every ounce of courage I possessed. "You can either drag me to your pack, where I'll fight you every step of the way, or you can have my cooperation. It's your choice."
His hand moved to my throat, not squeezing, just resting there, a reminder of his power, of how easily he could crush my windpipe if he chose.
"You're offering yourself in exchange for their safety?"
"Yes," I said simply. "No punishment for my family. No retaliation against my pack."
"And what of the child you're meant to bear me?" he asked, his voice suddenly softer but no less dangerous. "You know a human carrying a werewolf child..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.
"My own mother died giving birth to me. I know I might not survive it," I acknowledged, my voice barely more than a whisper. "I know this. But at least my family will be safe." I met his gaze directly, forcing myself not to look away.
"Promise me they'll be protected, not just from you, but from other packs too. I’m not stupid, I know my father has kept us small, kept us isolated, all to protect me. Even at the risk of the pack. Promise me my father can continue to lead Cragg High without interference."
For a long moment, he simply stared at me, his expression unreadable. The tension between us was so thick I could barely breathe, charged with something that went beyond fear, beyond anger, something primal and electric that seemed to connect us despite everything that should have kept us apart. Finally, he spoke.
"I will spare your family and your pack from punishment for this transgression. I will ensure protection for Cragg High against rival packs." His eyes glittered dangerously. "In return, you will come with me to Sovereign Claw. You will take your place as my mate. You will stand obediently by my side. You will bear my heir. And you will do so without resistance." Relief flooded through me, so powerful that my knees nearly buckled, and a tear slipped down my cheek.
"Thank you," I whispered.
"Don't thank me yet," he said, his voice dropping to a growl. "I have conditions of my own."
Alarm shot through me.
"What conditions?" Instead of answering, he moved with that supernatural speed again. One moment I was pressed against the wall, the next I was pinned against his chest, his arm like steel around my waist. His free hand tangled in my hair, yanking my head to the side to expose my neck.
"Wait, what are you doing?" I gasped, panic rising within me. "Let go!"
"This is my condition," he murmured, his breath hot against my skin. Before I could protest further, pain exploded where my neck met my shoulder as his teeth sank into my flesh. I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat as fire seemed to spread from the bite. Yet underneath the pain was something else, a forbidden pleasure that pulsed through me, dark and sweet and utterly terrifying. My body arched against his of its own accord, my breasts pressing against his chest, heat pooling between my thighs even as tears sprang to my eyes.
The pain and pleasure twined together, indistinguishable, overwhelming. His arms tightened around me as my knees gave way, holding me upright as he continued to claim me with his mouth, my blood warm and wet on my skin. Something was happening, something beyond the physical, an awareness of him seemed to seep into my consciousness, a connection forming that I couldn't explain. I could feel his satisfaction, his triumph, his dark desire. It was as if part of him was bleeding into me, marking me from the inside out. I felt that and more as my body was overwhelmed by all the senses so much that I felt like I would burst. The last thing I felt before I slipped into a blissfully pain free unconsciousness was something in my body clicking into place, like a piece that I never knew was missing.
