Chapter 96: The Price of Truth
The air became unbearably thick as the shadowy figure slowly circled the altar. Its eyes, two infinite pits of darkness, seemed to pierce the will of those who dared to look at them. The rest of the group stood frozen, unable to react, as if an invisible force kept them anchored to the ground. Only Vaiolet remained steadfast, facing that presence that seemed to defy all logic.
—You speak of truth as if it were a treasure—Vaiolet said firmly, though her heart pounded in her chest—. But I know it’s nothing more than a weapon. One that I am willing to wield.
The figure let out a low laugh, a mix of mockery and admiration.
—Weapons come at a price, girl. And this sanctuary exists to remind us of that. Every soul that has tried to claim what you seek has ended up consumed. What makes you think you will be different?
Vaiolet took a deep breath, searching within herself for the determination that had brought her here. She remembered the faces of her mother, her sister, and everything she had lost in her fight for justice. This was not the time for doubt.
—I am not like the others—she replied coldly—. I’m not seeking power or glory. I only seek to restore what was taken. And if I must face you to achieve it, I will.
The figure stopped moving, as if evaluating Vaiolet’s words. Finally, it extended a long, skeletal hand, pointing at the altar.
—Then, prove your resolve. Take the core of the pact and accept the challenge. If your will is strong enough, you will survive. If not... you will become another shadow in this place.
Kael, who had remained silent until that moment, stepped forward, his sword already drawn.
—You don’t have to do this alone! If this is the path, we’ll fight together.
Vaiolet looked at him with a mixture of gratitude and sorrow. She knew Kael would be willing to give his life for her, but she also knew this was a trial she had to face on her own.
—No—she said firmly—. This is something only I can do.
Kael gritted his teeth but nodded, reluctantly stepping back.
—Then come back alive—he murmured.
Vaiolet approached the altar, feeling the energy of the core pulse more intensely as she drew closer. Her hands trembled slightly as she reached for the object, but her determination did not waver. With a decisive motion, she wrapped her fingers around the core.
The impact was immediate. A surge of dark energy coursed through her body, causing her to collapse to her knees as a muffled scream escaped her lips. Her eyes involuntarily closed, and when she opened them again, she was no longer in the sanctuary.
The landscape had completely changed. Vaiolet stood in a place that seemed to exist outside of time and space. The sky was a deep red, and the ground was covered in what appeared to be a lake of black crystal. In the distance, indistinct figures moved like living shadows, watching her from afar.
—Welcome to the realm of trials—said a voice behind her.
Vaiolet quickly turned around, facing a figure that, to her surprise, was identical to herself. Her double looked at her with a cruel smile, its eyes reflecting an infinite abyss.
—What is this?—Vaiolet asked, although deep down she already knew the answer.
—This is what you really are—replied the figure—. A reflection of your fears, doubts, and weaknesses. To claim the truth, you must first face yourself.
Without warning, the figure attacked. Vaiolet barely had time to dodge the strike, retreating as she drew the dagger she always carried. Her double was fast, faster than she had anticipated, and each move seemed calculated to expose her weaknesses.
—Is this the best you can do?—taunted her double as it launched another strike—. You talk about justice and sacrifice, but deep down, you know you are selfish. All of this is just an excuse to ease your conscience.
Vaiolet gritted her teeth, blocking the attack with her dagger before counterattacking.
—You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed.
The battle continued, each blow and movement filled with an intensity that seemed to increase with every second. But it wasn’t just a physical fight. Every word from her double was like a knife sinking into her mind, forcing her to confront her own fears and doubts.
—What will you do when all of this is over, Vaiolet?—asked her double as it evaded another attack—. Do you really think you can go back to a normal life after everything you’ve done?
Vaiolet hesitated for a moment, but quickly regained her composure.
—I don’t care what happens to me. The only thing that matters is fulfilling my mission.
Her double laughed, though there was no joy in it.
—That’s a lie, and you know it.
Finally, after an exchange of blows that seemed to last an eternity, Vaiolet found an opening. With a shout, she threw her dagger at her double, driving it into her chest. The figure looked at her in surprise before falling to its knees, its form disintegrating into a cloud of shadows.
—Maybe you’re right—Vaiolet murmured, watching the shadows dissipate—. But I won’t let my doubts stop me.
Vaiolet opened her eyes again, finding herself back in the sanctuary. She was lying on the ground, surrounded by the rest of the group. Kael helped her sit up, his expression filled with concern.
—Are you okay?—he asked.
Vaiolet nodded, though her body felt exhausted.
—I did it.
The shadowy figure was still there, watching her with interest.
—Few have passed the trial. Maybe you have more strength than you appear to.
Vaiolet stood up, looking directly at the entity.
—You said truth comes at a price. I am ready to pay whatever is necessary.
The figure tilted its head slightly, as if considering her response. Finally, it raised a hand, pointing to the altar.
—Then, claim your reward.
Vaiolet approached the altar, where the core of the pact now shone with an intense light. As she touched it, a wave of energy enveloped her, and images began to emerge in her mind: memories, secrets, and truths that had been hidden for too long.
When it was over, Vaiolet stepped back, stumbling as she tried to process what she had seen. The shadowy figure disappeared without saying a word, and the sanctuary began to tremble as if it were about to collapse.
—We need to get out of here!—shouted Arlen, leading the group toward the exit.
Vaiolet followed, but in her mind, the images kept repeating. She had found the truth, but now she had to decide what to do with it. One thing was certain: nothing would ever be the same again.
