Chapter 101: Echoes of the Past
The group emerged from the portal, feeling a drastic change in the atmosphere. The crystalline tower they had seen from a distance now loomed before them, imposing and almost intimidating. Despite its translucent glow, there was a dark energy pulsing from within it, something that seemed to writhe beneath the surface of its radiance.
—This place... —Kael murmured, watching the tower with a furrowed brow—. It doesn’t seem like a refuge, but a trap.
Vaiolet looked around. The entrance to the tower was an arch of carved crystal, adorned with intricate symbols that glowed with a faint golden hue. The energy she felt came from these symbols, a mix of ancient power and magic that seemed on the verge of collapsing.
—It’s a test —she said finally, moving toward the entrance.
—A test? —Arlen asked, already having his bow ready as a precaution—. Do you think this is meant to stop us?
Vaiolet nodded, but did not stop. —If this place is what I think it is, it was created as a barrier. Something that protects or traps something very powerful.
—And are we sure we want to go in? —Loryn asked, casting a skeptical glance at the group.
Vaiolet turned toward them, her expression serious. —We have no choice. If we want answers, if we want to stop what’s happening, we must move forward.
Kael took a step forward, standing by her side. —Then, let’s move forward together.
With that decision, they crossed the threshold of the tower. As soon as they did, the air changed. A wave of energy surrounded them, and the world around them seemed to twist. The crystal walls began to reflect their images, but these were not mere reflections: their mirrored versions seemed darker, more threatening.
—I don’t like this —Arlen said, watching how his own reflection raised a bow and aimed it directly at him.
Suddenly, the images in the crystal moved, emerging from the walls as if coming to life. Each member of the group found themselves facing their own replica, identical in appearance but with a dark energy that set them apart.
—What is this? —Loryn asked, drawing her daggers.
—They’re manifestations —Vaiolet said, stepping back slightly as her replica advanced toward her—. Reflections of our doubts, fears, and darkness.
—Then we must destroy them —Kael growled, raising his sword and attacking his replica.
The clash of swords rang through the air, but Kael’s replica not only blocked the strike but counterattacked with almost inhuman precision.
—They’re not just illusions! —Kael yelled, narrowly dodging an attack that would have been lethal.
Vaiolet watched as each of her companions fought against their replica. She realized that these creatures not only mimicked their skills but seemed to anticipate their moves. Her own replica watched her with a mocking smile, as if enjoying her confusion.
—This isn’t about strength —Vaiolet said aloud, trying to make the others hear her as she dodged an attack from her reflection—. We can’t defeat them by fighting the way we always do.
—Then what do you suggest? —Arlen shouted, blocking an arrow shot by his replica.
Vaiolet closed her eyes, trying to concentrate. She felt that the energy in the tower was responding to their emotions, amplifying them. If these manifestations were truly reflections of their fears and doubts, then the key to defeating them was not fighting, but accepting.
—Don’t fight them! —she shouted finally—. Accept them!
—What? —Loryn asked, narrowly dodging an attack from her replica.
—Trust me! —Vaiolet insisted, turning to face her reflection directly.
Her replica smiled, raising a hand that began to glow with dark energy. Vaiolet took a deep breath, letting the energy of the place flow through her. —You’re not my enemy —she said, more to herself than to the replica—. You are a part of me.
The replica paused, as if her words had confused it. Vaiolet took a step forward, extending a hand toward it. —I accept you. I accept my fears, my mistakes, and my darkness.
The replica stared at her for a few seconds before dissipating into a cloud of light.
—It worked! —Loryn exclaimed, who had been watching.
—Do the same! —Vaiolet ordered.
One by one, the others followed her lead. Kael, though initially reluctant, lowered his sword and faced his replica with a determined look. —I’m not afraid of you —he said, and the replica disappeared.
When all the manifestations vanished, the atmosphere in the tower changed. The crystal walls stopped reflecting their images and began to emit a warm glow. A corridor opened before them, lit by golden light.
—We did it —Arlen said, letting out a sigh of relief.
—That was just the beginning —Vaiolet replied, walking down the corridor.
The group followed her, their footsteps echoing in the silence. At the end of the corridor, they arrived at a circular room with a pedestal in the center. On it, a sizable crystal floated, radiating an intense light.
—This must be the heart of the tower —Loryn said, watching the crystal in fascination.
Vaiolet approached the pedestal, feeling how the fragment within her reacted to the crystal. She extended a hand toward it, but before she could touch it, a voice resonated in the room.
—Who dares disturb my rest?
The group tensed, looking for the source of the voice. A figure appeared before them, emerging from the air as if it had always been there. It was a tall man with sharp features and eyes that glowed with supernatural intensity. His clothing seemed to be made of the same substance as the crystals of the tower.
—We are travelers seeking answers —Vaiolet said, facing the man without hesitation.
—The answers come at a price —the man replied, observing her with interest—. And you carry something that does not belong to you.
Vaiolet clenched the fragment in her hand, feeling its warmth. —This is part of something greater, and I need to understand it.
The man smiled, but it wasn’t a kind smile. —Then, prove that you are worthy.
With a motion of his hand, the room changed. The floor turned liquid, and the group found themselves standing on a surface that reflected the starry sky. The figure of the man vanished, but his voice continued to resonate.
—Only those who face their own limits will be able to move forward.
Vaiolet looked at her companions, who nodded silently. —We’re ready.
And so, the next challenge began.
