Chapter 80: What the Blood Answers
Chapter 80: What the Blood Answers
Annora
His mouth finds mine before the thought finishes forming.
It is not gentle.
It is not patient.
It is survival.
Raw, desperate, devouring.
His lips crush against mine, tongue sweeping in with a hunger that borders on violence. There is no hesitation, no careful exploration. He kisses me like a man who has watched the world try to rip everything away from him and has decided, in this moment, to take something back.
Not from me.
Never from me.
With me.
His hands tighten at my waist, fingers digging into my flesh with bruising strength, as though the chaos beyond these walls is still clawing at him and he refuses to let it have even an inch of me. I meet him with equal force, my fingers gripping his shoulders, nails biting into muscle as I pull him impossibly closer.
I need the solid heat of him.
The grounding press of his body against mine.
The proof that I am still here.
Flesh and blood and power.
The room still smells of smoke, iron, and old stone. The scent of violence has not left us. It clings to the walls, to the sheets, to the air between our mouths. It is on my skin in dark streaks and drying patches, smeared across my ribs, my hip, my throat. His hands move over it without flinching, staining his palms and fingers with what remains of the night.
Neither of us pulls away.
The metallic tang lingers between us when our mouths break apart for air, but it only sharpens the moment. The world does not wait for us to be clean.
Why should this?
His forehead presses to mine for one suspended breath. His eyes are too dark, too bright, burning with fury he has not yet spent. Not all of it belongs to the court. Not all of it belongs to the rebels. Some of it belongs to the fear he will never confess aloud. The fear of what they would do to me if his arms were not strong enough, if his crown were not heavy enough, if his choice were not sharp enough to cut through every law they worship.
“I am here,” I whisper.
His jaw flexes.
“I know.”
But he says it like he is trying to make himself believe it.
So I kiss him again.
This time, I am the one who takes.
He growls low in his throat, and the sound goes through me like flame licking dry silk. He lifts me easily, strong arms banding beneath my thighs as he carries me toward the bed. My legs wrap around his hips instinctively, and the hard press of him against me sends heat gathering low in my belly. Urgency replaces restraint completely.
Clothes are shed in frantic, half-coordinated movements. His shirt is dragged over his head. My blood-stained garments are shoved aside or ripped away with little care. Fabric tears. Laces snap. Skin meets skin in a heated slide, and I suck in a breath at the shock of him against me.
There is nothing careful about this.
There cannot be.
Care belonged to the hours before everything broke open. Care belonged to quiet glances and controlled touches, to the lies we told ourselves when the palace still pretended it was whole.
This is not careful.
This is what remains after the doors have splintered.
His mouth moves along my throat, teeth grazing the tender place where he marked me. The touch sends a tremor through me, but not from fear. Never from fear. I feel the echo of that first bite like a brand beneath the skin, the choice that changed everything, the sin that made me queen before anyone could ask whether I was worthy.
His lips trail lower, claiming my jaw, my collarbone, the sensitive swell of my breast. Each touch is an anchor, heavy and deliberate, tethering something inside me that still threatens to drift into the void.
I arch into him, a broken sound escaping my lips as his hand slides down my body. His palm is firm against my thigh, his fingers digging in as if he needs the certainty of my flesh beneath his touch. I answer by pulling him closer, by pressing my mouth to the hard line of his shoulder, by letting my teeth scrape against his skin until he makes a sound that is half warning, half surrender.
The shadows at the edges of the chamber stir.
I feel them before I see them.
They curl along the stone floor, stretching toward the bed like dark water drawn by the moon. Once, the sight would have made me stiffen. Once, I would have wondered what was wrong with me, what terrible thing had woken inside my blood.
Now I only breathe through it.
Alaric stills above me.
His gaze cuts toward the walls, then back to me.
“Annora.”
My name in his mouth is rough, almost reverent.
“I know,” I whisper.
The candle flames bend toward me.
Not wildly.
Not violently.
Only enough to prove they have noticed.
My pulse should race with terror. Instead, something calm unfolds beneath my ribs. A strange and solemn certainty. The power does not feel like a beast snapping at its chain. It feels watchful. Waiting. Mine.
Alaric lowers himself over me again, but slower now, his eyes never leaving mine. “Are you afraid?”
I look past him, toward the shadows holding their place along the floor. Toward the fire that leans and listens. Toward the blood on my skin and his hands and the bed beneath us.
Then I look back at him.
“No.”
Something shifts in his face.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
His mouth comes down on mine again, and the kiss is different now. Still fierce. Still hungry. But threaded with something deeper than desperation. It is vow and warning together. It is the king and the man, the monster and the protector, all of him pressed into me as if the world has narrowed to this one truth.
I am alive.
I am his.
He is mine.
And no council, no noble, no ancient law will make either of us kneel gently.
The bed creaks beneath us as he settles between my thighs. My hands move over him with the same urgency, learning and claiming, sliding over the hard planes of muscle, the scars, the strength. He presses into me, and my breath breaks at the stretch, at the fullness, at the sudden sharp intimacy of being joined when everything around us wants to tear apart.
He pauses only long enough to look at me.
I nod once.
That is all he needs.
Then he moves.
Deep. Hard. Relentless.
Not cruel.
Never that.
But unrestrained in a way that makes my body answer with a force I cannot hide. Each thrust drives a sound from me, each breath catching, breaking, returning. My nails rake down his back. His mouth finds mine again, swallowing my gasps as our bodies collide in a desperate rhythm.
We do not disappear into it.
We do not soften it.
We meet it.
Raw, messy, blood-streaked, and unapologetic.
Together.
The shadows gather closer, but they do not rise. The fire trembles in its grate, brightening with every sharp sound that leaves my throat. I feel both waiting at the edge of me, no longer strangers, no longer enemies. They do not pull me away from him. They do not swallow me.
They answer.
That is what changes me most.
Not the pleasure.
Not the hunger.
Not even the way Alaric looks at me as if I am something sacred and dangerous at once.
It is the answering.
The sense that what lives inside me is not trying to destroy me. It is listening. It is learning my breath, my anger, my will.
And I am learning it back.
Release crashes through me without mercy. My body tightens around him as pleasure tears through me in sharp, shattering waves. My cry fills the chamber, and the candles flare high enough to paint the ceiling gold.
Alaric follows with a guttural groan, burying his face against my throat as his body trembles over mine. For several heartbeats, neither of us moves. We remain tangled together, slick with sweat, streaked with blood, breathing as if we have survived a battle no one else will ever understand.
At last, the world settles.
The flames lower.
The shadows loosen.
Silence returns, but it is not empty.
Not fragile.
Steady.
I rest against him, my fingers tracing slow, absent patterns along the damp skin of his chest. Beneath my palm, I feel the slow, powerful rhythm of him. He holds me close, one arm locked around my waist, his hand spread over my back as if even now he is unwilling to let the world reach me first.
“They will keep pushing,” I say quietly.
His mouth brushes my hair.
“I know.”
I lift my head enough to look at him. “And you?”
His eyes meet mine, black and burning.
“I will keep choosing.”
The words settle over me like a crown no one can remove.
His arm tightens around me, possessive and warm.
“Then they will learn what that means,” I whisper.
He watches me for a long moment, and I see it there. Not doubt. Not fear. Not regret.
Belief.
I close my eyes.
Not in exhaustion.
In certainty.
For the first time, my power does not feel like something I am trying to survive.
It feels like something I am deciding how to use.
And that changes everything.
