Chapter 44
Hearing this, Alexander looked up.
Looking at Lila's innocent face in front of him, his mind automatically conjured up the image of John teasing her with that smiling face of his.
She looked easy to fool. Maybe John wouldn't even need a few words before Lila would be completely under his control.
Grandma said John was interesting, and Lila herself found John very likable too.
For some reason, a sense of crisis, like something that belonged to him was being taken away, emerged from somewhere, spreading wildly and making him feel irritated and displeased.
Lila watched as Alexander stared at her without saying anything. For a moment, she couldn't figure out whether she should just leave and go downstairs or wait for him to open his mouth and answer her question.
After a few seconds, she tentatively said, "I won't get any closer to Mr. Lucas than the distance between the driver's seat and passenger seat. Should I head downstairs now?"
Alexander glanced at her coolly. "John likes to hit on women. Did you know that?"
"I had no idea," Lila said, full of confusion.
After answering, she added, "I just met him. How would I know?"
Alexander asked again, "Now that you know, what do you think?"
Lila didn't understand what he meant. "What he likes to do is his business. It has nothing to do with me, right?"
Alexander reminded her out of nowhere, "You're a married woman now."
"I know that. Even though you don't want others to know about our relationship, because there's a marriage certificate binding us, I won't cross any lines with other men. You can completely rest assured about that. I still have basic moral standards."
"You're quite good at making yourself sound good."
She said quietly, "I'm just telling the truth."
"Alright, go downstairs."
"Goodbye, boss."
With that, Lila turned and went downstairs.
Alexander watched her leave the office, watched her figure grow more and more distant until it disappeared. He lowered his head to look at the documents again, but somehow, the content just wouldn't stick in his mind.
He didn't trust John.
And Lila, he trusted her even less.
When Lila left the Sinclair Group and saw John, she suddenly remembered she hadn't brought Alexander's car keys.
But then she thought again. Alexander's car was so expensive. What if she hit something while practicing?
But as his friend, someone from the same wealthy circle, John probably drove a luxury car too, right?
It looked like she'd just have to be extra careful while learning. Extra, extra careful.
When John saw her coming, he opened the passenger door for her. "Get in, little rabbit. I'll sacrifice my car to teach you today."
"Where are we going to practice?"
"Let's find a road with fewer people. Once you get the hang of it, I'll take you around areas with more traffic."
Lila thought his suggestion was pretty practical, like he was really prepared to teach her properly. She gave him a polite and sincere smile. "Mr. Lucas, thank you."
"Don't mention it."
As his words fell, he tilted his chin toward the car. "Getting in?"
"Okay."
Lila got in the car. John closed the door and walked around the front of the car to get in the driver's seat.
At the entrance of the Sinclair Group.
Alexander had just come out when he saw John opening the car door for Lila and closing it for her. His face darkened.
Just as he expected.
This John, his approach with women was always the same. Always doing these cheap, self-degrading gestures to win people's trust.
Alexander turned around and went back into the company lobby.
Alexander walked toward the elevators while calling John.
When the other party picked up, a light laugh came through. "Alex, you're calling me. Don't tell me you're worried I'll do something to your little rabbit?"
