Chapter 38
Lila watched Alexander charging toward her aggressively, her heart racing for no reason. She spoke into the phone, "Have you eaten yet?"
"Yes, I have. How about you?"
"I just finished making dinner, about to eat."
In her ear, Grandma asked, "Lila, tell Grandma, what kind of person is Alexander?"
"He..." Lila had only said one word when Alexander, who had already rushed over, snatched her phone away and put it next to himself, calling out, "Grandma."
Lila's eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at him.
On the other end of the phone, a voice unfamiliar to Alexander came through, "Are you Lila's husband?"
Hearing this, he immediately frowned.
This wasn't his grandmother.
Alexander looked at Lila with furrowed brows. She pointed at herself while mouthing the words, "That's my grandma."
Alexander's face instantly darkened.
The look he gave Lila was as if he wanted to bore holes right through her.
Despite this, Alexander still answered in a gentle voice, responding to Lila's grandmother's question, "Yes, I'm her husband."
Hearing him say this, Lila was extremely surprised.
Her expression was like she'd seen a ghost in broad daylight!
"What's your name, young man?" Lila's grandmother started chatting with Alexander.
He answered patiently, "Alexander."
Lila's grandmother laughed, "That's a nice name. Young man, when you have time, have Lila bring you home for a visit. Now that you're husband and wife, you should learn more about where she grew up. Our little village is really nice. Lots of people come to visit every year."
"Sure, definitely."
After saying this, Alexander handed the phone back to Lila.
Lila snapped out of her daze, her heart scared half to death, and quickly took the phone while saying, "Grandma, um... I'm about to eat, so let's talk later."
"Okay, get along well with him, don't cause him trouble. But if you're wronged, you must tell Grandma. Even if I have to risk these old bones, I'll get justice for my granddaughter."
Lila felt deeply moved and held back her urge to cry, saying with a smile, "I know, Grandma. Don't worry, I won't let myself be wronged."
With that, Lila hung up.
As soon as the call ended, her touched feelings were gradually replaced by panic.
Lila kept her eyes down, not daring to look at Alexander standing in front of her.
He wouldn't strangle her, would he?
Actually, probably not. Murder is illegal.
Lila let out a breath, considering whether she should ask him to eat because he hadn't been as nasty to Grandma as he was to her.
Maybe if she asked him to eat, he'd think the whole thing about her grandma being his grandma would just blow over?
As she struggled with this decision, Alexander's angry voice sounded above her head. "Lila, did you do that on purpose?"
"What?"
Lila looked up, her face full of innocence as she met his gaze, "Do what on purpose?"
"You deliberately called your grandmother to make me think you were going to complain to Grandma, right?"
As he spoke, he stepped closer, his tone getting heavier, "Should I praise you for being so calculating?"
Lila didn't dare speak.
Even if it was true, she couldn't admit it now.
Otherwise, she really doubted Alexander would let her survive the day.
Lila smiled at him.
That smile, sweet with a hint of fear. "Honey, you've got it wrong. I just missed my grandma. I saw you sitting in the living room ignoring me, so I thought I'd call my grandma for a chat. Nothing more than that."
His response was a disdainful question, "You think I'll believe you?"
