Chapter 126
Lila thought his idea was pretty far-fetched.
Growing up, she had always kept a normal social distance from guys. Forget about giving gifts to guys. She didn't even have any particularly close male friends. The few she was familiar with could only be called classmates at best.
As for Chris, he was at most a crush, and she hadn't been bold enough back then to give him any gifts.
Alexander watched as Lila seemed lost in thought for a long while without saying anything. His scrutinizing gaze fell on her face. "What, did I guess right?"
Lila snapped back to reality and looked at him in denial. "No."
"You say no, and I'm just supposed to believe you?"
"Why are you so suspicious? This gift was bought for you in the first place."
Hearing this, Alexander's interest was immediately piqued, "Oh?"
"The other night I hit you and hurt you. I was afraid you'd get back at me, so I thought I'd buy a gift to apologize, which is why I got the lighter."
"Get back at you?"
Alexander picked out the key point from her words and sneered, "In your eyes, am I really that petty?"
She quickly defended herself, "I smashed a hole in your head—how could that count as being petty? Besides, who are you? You're the CEO of the Sinclair Group, worth trillions. Your brain is very valuable. It was definitely wrong of me to hurt you."
He rewarded her with four words, quite satisfied, "You pass."
After saying that, Alexander looked down and played with his newly acquired lighter. His thin lips held a faint smile, his eyes deep and unreadable as to what he was thinking.
Watching him rarely shut that annoying mouth of his and quiet down, with the usual hostility gone from between his brows, Lila couldn't help but find the scene suddenly quite pleasing to the eye.
The living room was quiet for a while.
After some time had passed, Lila felt it was pretty boring just sitting in the living room, so she wondered if she should go upstairs and use Alexander's study to read some books for the teacher certification exam.
Just then, a phone rang.
She looked up following the sound.
Alexander picked up his phone, glanced at the caller ID, and immediately looked at Lila.
She asked in confusion, "It's your phone ringing, why are you looking at me?"
He said nothing and answered the call in a low voice, "Grandma, what's up?"
"Is Lila home?"
"If you want to ask her something, why are you calling me?"
Gaia scolded, "You little brat, can't I ask about my granddaughter-in-law?"
"Go ahead, what is it?"
"It's the weekend today. Why don't you bring Lila to the Mansion for lunch?"
He raised his eyes to stare at Lila, deliberately repeating the key point from the old lady's words, "Go to the Mansion for lunch?"
Hearing this, Lila immediately waved her hands at Alexander, her refusal very strong.
She pointed at his injured head and used lip-reading to convey the reason, "No way to explain it if Grandma sees."
However, Alexander indifferently withdrew his gaze, completely ignoring her hints and refusal. He even asked the old lady contentedly, "What's the Mansion planning to make for lunch?"
Lila instantly felt hopeless.
Since he was already asking what dishes would be made, it looked like there was no escaping this.
She had injured Alexander's head the other night. If they went to the Mansion and Grandma saw it, he would definitely tell on her, and then Grandma would think all her good behavior and understanding nature had been an act.
But she really hadn't been acting.
Lila hung her head, looking very troubled.
Alexander was still talking with Gaia, "Mm, got it."
Who knows what Gaia said.
"Okay, goodbye Grandma."
Lila couldn't hear what Grandma was saying on the other end, but she heard Alexander's responses loud and clear, word for word.
Without even thinking about it, she knew they definitely had to go to the Mansion.
