Twenty Six
FIORA POV
I stood still for a few seconds as the five guards entered, their weapons aimed directly at me. Every second felt like an eternity, my breath shallow, my mind racing to find a way out. But one thing was certain — I couldn’t give up now. We were too close.
"Fiora Starfire ...," one of the guards said , his voice firm.
His words echoed through the control room, which now felt incredibly cramped. They knew who I was, and that meant they knew what we were doing. The time we had to avoid disaster was running out .
I held my breath and quickly calculated my options. Five guards. Two were at the door, while the other three were farther back, but moving quickly. Though I had just hacked into the security system, I knew I couldn’t fight them directly—not physically, at least. I had to rely on my wits.
A plan began to form in my mind. I grabbed the sound diversion device from my pocket and pressed it, my hand trembling slightly. The alarm kept blaring , but this time, I directed the sound to another part of the facility. A small explosion from the server room far away. The sound distracted them.
"Check that," the guard closest to the door commanded to two others .
I knew this was my chance. As the two guards turned to investigate, I lunged, using the momentum to grab the plasma weapon hidden near me — the one I had stashed in the control room.
Before the other guards realized what had happened, I fired the plasma at one of them, hitting him square in the shoulder. The explosion threw him backward, his body crashing to the floor. But I only had a split second.
"Fall back!" the other guard shouted, his eyes filled with anger and confusion. Two others rushed toward me, but I couldn’t avoid them now.
I leapt to the side, using the room's door as cover to reposition myself. The sound of my weapon firing stopped one more guard, while one remained, charging toward me . I could see the tension on his face, knowing he was trying to line up the perfect shot.
But before he could pull the trigger, a loud explosion echoed from outside, shaking the entire facility. That was Brynmor’s signal.
His voice came through the comms. "Now, Fiora! Get out of there!"
I ignored the fear creeping into my body and ran toward the exit. Within seconds, my body felt heavier, but I knew I had to reach Brynmor. We still had to get out of here .
However, the control room door was locked as I approached. There was no way out through this route—trapped inside. I turned around, seeing the remaining guard chasing me from behind .
I quickly searched for a way to open the door, feeling around the buttons near the main entrance. When I pressed it, a holographic screen appeared in front of the door, showing that it was locked with high-level encryption. Time was running out.
I glanced at the remaining plasma weapon, thinking about it for a moment. If I could destroy the door’s system, maybe I could open a path. But what could I do in this short time ?
Hearing footsteps drawing closer, I made a snap decision. I aimed the plasma weapon at the door's control panel and fired. A small explosion sounded, causing the door to open slightly, just enough for me to squeeze through.
I ran as fast as I could, hoping Brynmor hadn’ t gotten trapped in a worse situation .The sound of gunfire following me made it feel like I wasn’t fast enough. But with quick steps, I managed to navigate through the corridors of the facility, now swarming with guards. I had to get out, and I had to find Brynmor .
I finally reached the back of the facility, where Brynmor was waiting, standing behind a large rock that concealed the emergency exit. His face was illuminated by the small fire burning off in the distance, his body exhausted and staggering, but he still stood strong, watching me with a look of intense focus.
"Fiora , hurry!" he shouted as I drew near.
I ran faster, grabbing his hand as we finally reached a safe spot. We had to get out of this facility, and as the sounds of guards' footsteps grew nearer, I could feel the final moments before we were truly trapped.
Brynmor pulled me closer, his eyes still sharp, though clearly tired. "We need to get out of here, now!" he said, breathing heavily. "They’ll send more forces after this."
We sprinted down a narrow path hidden between large rocks, entering the forest far from the facility. The tension still hung in the air, and even though we had escaped, I knew this was just the beginning. We weren’t safe yet.
When we finally reached a more distant shelter, Brynmor stopped and turned to face me. "Are you alright ?" he asked in a soft voice.
I nodded, though my body ached. "I’m fine . Better than we thought."
He looked at me, and I could see the pride in his eyes. "I don’t know what’s going to happen after this, Fiora. But I know one thing. I couldn’t do this without you."
My heart fluttered at his words, but I knew my answer. I would never let him fight this alone. "We’ll survive, Brynmor. We’ll face it all together."
He stared at me for a few seconds, as if trying to find meaning in my words. Finally, he gave a faint smile, though it was only half-hearted. "We’ll fight until the end."
We embraced, the warmth and comfort of his presence enveloping me, even before I realized how much it meant.
"We have to keep going," I said, trying to sound calmer. "Don't stop."
Brynmor just nodded, his breath heavy. "Again, and again," he said, half-smiling despite the exhaustion.
