Chapter 70
Sophie lowered her head and kissed those cool, thin lips.
The soft touch was like a dragonfly skimming water. Just once, yet it stirred up ripples.
Sophie's heart beat faster and faster. She quickly pulled away, her cheeks burning.
From the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Matthew's ears turning red bit by bit. She swallowed, biting her lower lip, waiting for Matthew to get angry with her.
Matthew's lips pressed together. He forced down the restlessness in his heart, his Adam's apple bobbing as his gaze moved to her foot, which was shining after he'd applied the medicine.
Surprisingly, neither of them said anything.
Matthew rubbed her foot for a while longer before standing up. "Done."
Sophie cleared her throat and pulled her foot back to look at it. She didn't look at him. "Mm. Thanks."
Matthew went to the bathroom.
Sophie let out a deep breath and patted her face. It was burning hot.
He actually didn't scold her.
Sophie felt a bit uncomfortable with that.
Matthew came out after washing his hands. He didn't look at her, but went to the fridge, took out a bottle of water, opened it, and drank more than half in one go.
"I want some too." Sophie's voice wasn't loud.
Matthew glanced at her and poured her a cup of warm water.
"I want cold water."
Matthew turned back and got her a bottle of cold water.
Sophie took a few sips. Her heart returned to its normal rhythm, and she screwed the cap back on tight.
The two of them fell into silence again.
If Matthew's phone hadn't rung, who knows how long this silence would have lasted.
Sophie pouted slightly, playing with the water bottle in her hands.
Matthew looked at the caller ID and answered.
"Matthew, someone's causing trouble at the shop..." On the other end, Bella's voice carried panic and anxiety.
Matthew frowned. "Call the police."
"I did call the police. But I'm scared."
"I'll have Joshua come over."
"Can't you come?" Bella asked carefully.
Matthew's tone was flat. "I can't."
"Oh." Bella's disappointment came through the phone.
Matthew hung up and called Joshua.
He didn't hide the call from Sophie.
"Joshua, go to Bella's shop. Someone's causing trouble."
Hearing this, Sophie wasn't surprised at all.
Only Bella would call Matthew at a time like this.
What was rare was that Matthew actually wasn't going.
After hanging up, Matthew turned around to find Sophie looking at him with eyes as clean and pure as a deer's.
"Going to sleep?" Matthew asked her.
Sophie pressed her lips together and nodded.
Matthew walked over and grabbed her arm to help her up.
Sophie sat there refusing to move.
"What?" Matthew asked.
"Carry me."
Sophie was pushing her luck.
Matthew stood still and let go of her hand.
The two of them were at a standoff.
"I already kissed you first, shouldn't you at least carry me?" Sophie asked him directly.
Matthew looked at her acting like it was perfectly reasonable, and he really wanted to just leave her there.
Not only did he not leave her, he actually bent down slightly and picked her up.
Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, her smile even more smug after getting her way.
She leaned gently on his shoulder, her lips curved upward the whole time.
Matthew carried her into the bedroom and put her on the bed. Sophie's hands stayed hooked around his neck, refusing to let go, so he had to stay bent over with his hands braced on the bed.
"Oops, I forgot I haven't washed up yet." Sophie bit her lip with a smile. "I'll have to trouble you to carry me to wash up."
Matthew frowned, his eyes darkening. "Know when to stop."
Sophie tightened her grip, pulling him down with her weight, staring straight at him. "I'm your wife. What's wrong with you carrying me to wash up?"
Matthew swallowed.
Sophie's gaze moved to his Adam's apple, and she suddenly leaned closer.
Matthew jerked his neck back, watching her warily. "What are you doing now?"
"Want to kiss you." Sophie's intention was obvious.
Matthew's ears grew hotter and hotter.
Two adults alone in a room, in such an intimate position, something happening would be all too easy.
Sophie's tongue lightly licked her red lips. Her breathing quickened, and the desire to kiss him became unstoppable.
Turns out Sophie could be moved by desire too.
She moved closer and closer to him.
Suddenly her waist tightened and her body lifted into the air.
Matthew had picked her up again.
Sophie raised her eyebrows, then laughed out loud. "Matthew, are you that afraid of me kissing you?"
Matthew could feel his composure slipping.
He strode with her to the bathroom. "You're a woman. Can't you be a little more reserved?"
"You're my husband. Why do I need to be reserved?"
Sophie was actually a bit surprised by how gentlemanly he was being.
Aside from that forced kiss before, he really hadn't shown any interest in her.
"Matthew, do you have no interest in me, or no interest in women?" Sophie couldn't help but wonder if he had some kind of problem in that area.
But when he kissed her, he didn't seem like someone with a problem.
He should have desires.
Standing in the bathroom, Matthew put her down.
Sophie's injured foot landed on top of his foot. Her arms wrapped around his neck as she looked up at him, very serious. "Answer me."
Matthew reached for her hands, trying to remove them.
Sophie's hands gripped tightly, refusing to let go.
"Your foot doesn't hurt anymore?"
"Never mind if it hurts or not. Answer my question first." Sophie persisted. "Do you have no interest in me, or..."
Matthew cupped her face and kissed her lips.
Unlike her gentle touch, he kissed with some force, as if holding back, as if venting, and more like showing her the consequences of provoking him.
This kiss was much more human than the previous ones.
At least it wasn't as frantic.
Sophie's eyes widened as she looked at him, then she closed them, accepting his kiss, enjoying it.
Without force, Sophie's arms around his neck, Matthew's hands around her waist, they turned and shifted.
Their breaths mingled, heartbeats overlapped, lips pressed tightly together, slowly exploring deeper...
This was the first time they kissed like a man and woman moved by feeling.
Instinctively wanting more, wanting it to last longer.
Sophie pressed tightly against his body.
Her heart tingled, and the sensations rising within her made her bolder. She moved her hands down to wrap around his waist, slipping them under his shirt. When she touched his firm waist, the man's body clearly stiffened for a moment.
But only for a moment. He quickly adapted to her touch.
They were both adults. They knew exactly what they wanted.
Desire and love could always be separated.
In this matter, men and women were always perfectly in sync.
Matthew lifted her up and sat her on the bathroom counter, grabbing the hem of her shirt to pull it up. Sophie's eyes reddened as her hands didn't stop either, eagerly unbuttoning his shirt.
