Chapter 63
"She's Matthew's wife."
Sophie never expected to hear Matthew's name from these people.
And it seemed they were somewhat afraid of Matthew.
"Who's Matthew?" There were others just as confused as Sophie.
Who was Matthew?
Why should they be afraid of him?
Sophie was curious too.
Why would they be afraid of Matthew?
"You might not know who Matthew is, but you should know that if you cross him, he'll use every means possible to make you fall from heaven to hell."
"Could you be any more dramatic?"
"It is dramatic, but it's also true. Someone once messed with his girlfriend or friend, I'm not sure which, and somehow he made that family go bankrupt overnight."
These words finally made the group settle down.
Sophie never imagined Matthew's name would carry such weight.
Either way, Sophie breathed a sigh of relief.
"You've got it wrong." Someone else spoke up. "Matthew isn't even married. Where would a wife come from?"
At this, the person who had called her Matthew's wife turned around and asked, "Who did you ask?"
"Someone in the know." The other person sneered. "For someone like Matthew, marriage would be a big deal. Look, she doesn't even have a ring on her finger. Besides, Matthew has only publicly acknowledged one girlfriend."
Sophie didn't expect this person to know so much about Matthew.
"That just shows you don't know him well enough." Sophie realized Matthew's influence among them was significant, and she couldn't let this opportunity slip.
Compared to her innocence and her life, using Matthew's name wasn't shameful at all.
"If you were really Matthew's wife, you should have said so from the start. Matthew's name can get you anywhere in Silverlight City. Everyone would give him face." The other person cornered Sophie.
Sophie took a deep breath. "Then why haven't you considered that the fact I'm Matthew's wife became known to someone? By your logic, someone like me shouldn't have any connection to Matthew. But someone knows about my relationship with him."
Smart people would find this reasoning sound.
Unfortunately, the other person simply didn't believe it.
"So what if there is a marriage? If no one knows about it, it just means he doesn't value you." The other person smiled smugly.
Sophie couldn't refute this. It was the truth.
Even if she really was violated by these people, Matthew might not stand up for her.
"In that case, shall we continue?"
These people had never intended to let Sophie go.
Finally having such a beautiful woman who was so feisty. Wouldn't it be a waste not to have some fun?
Just as the danger seemed to pass, it surged back like an undercurrent. A trace of despair rose in Sophie's heart.
She gripped the bottle neck tightly.
Suddenly, the door was opened from outside. The club manager followed behind the newcomer, clearly having been forced to open the door.
Alex rushed in, grabbed Sophie's hand. "Let's go!"
Sophie never expected Alex to appear here.
She had so many questions.
But there was no time to ask them now.
"Hey, what are you doing?" The person Sophie had hit on the head pointed at Alex angrily.
Alex stared coldly at them. "The police are already outside."
The crowd didn't believe him.
Just then, a club staff member hurried over and whispered to the manager, "The police are here."
Now their mood for fun finally dampened.
Alex seized the moment while they were backing down and pulled Sophie out.
Outside the club, there were indeed police cars.
Alex led Sophie to his car, closed the door, and drove away.
Sophie looked back at the magnificent club. Behind all that glitz and glamour, how much filth was hidden?
She had just entered hell and nearly fallen into an abyss she couldn't climb out of.
The aftermath left her somewhat dazed, as if her soul had left her body.
The car stopped by the roadside. Alex gripped the steering wheel and looked at her.
She was staring blankly, completely lost in thought.
"Are you okay?" Alex asked, his emotions finally calming down.
Sophie snapped out of it.
She picked at her fingers and, looking down, saw a cut on her index finger. When she had picked at it earlier, it had started bleeding.
Alex immediately pulled out a tissue and pressed it against the cut.
"How did you end up here? And how did you know I was there?" Sophie finally asked her questions.
Alex stared at the blood soaking through the tissue on her finger and replaced it with another. "After you rejected me last time, I came here. I partnered with a friend to start a company and will be staying here for a while."
"They posted your photo, and I saw it." Seeing her confusion, Alex explained, "These rich kids have a group chat. Whenever someone discovers something or someone interesting, they post it in the group."
Sophie understood.
After all, Alex was also a wealthy young master.
"Tonight I was having dinner nearby. Someone posted photos of you and them at the club, so I rushed over." Alex took a deep breath as he spoke. "Do you know how grateful I am that I was in the area?"
As he looked up, his eyes were slightly red.
Sophie was grateful too that he had been nearby.
If he hadn't been here, hadn't been in the area, hadn't been in that group chat...
Sophie could imagine what would have happened to her.
No matter how tough she was, she couldn't be tougher than that group.
"Alex, thank you."
At this moment, she was truly grateful to him.
Alex took a deep breath, restraining the impulse in his heart. "Let me take you back to your hotel first."
Sophie was also on edge and nodded.
After arriving at the hotel, Sophie opened her room door.
Alex stood outside.
Sophie hesitated, then turned to look at him.
This man, she had admired him in her youth. Actually, there hadn't been any other problems between them. If his parents hadn't interfered, perhaps they would still be together, maybe even married.
Unfortunately, there are no "what ifs" in this world.
"Alex."
"Yes." Alex's slightly red eyes held deep affection.
Sophie smiled at him. "Thank you."
Alex took a deep breath and could no longer hold back. He rushed forward and hugged Sophie tightly.
Sophie was pulled firmly into his embrace. Her body stiffened, her arms hanging at her sides, motionless.
He held her with great force, his arms tightly around her body, and he was trembling slightly.
"Sophie, let's get back together, okay?"
Alex's voice choked up.
Sophie's heart clenched tightly at this moment. For some reason, her nose suddenly stung and her eyes grew hot.
All these years, she had never met anyone who made her heart flutter like Alex did.
She could feel that Alex still had feelings for her.
It was probably... the kind of feeling Matthew had for Bella.
Get back together?
Sophie had said she wouldn't look back.
Not just because she had said those words, but because she knew very clearly that no matter how many years passed, the people who had prevented them from being together back then would still not change.
"Alex..."
Before Sophie could finish, a rush of hurried footsteps startled her.
She looked toward the sound and saw Matthew appearing before her, travel-worn.
When Matthew saw the two people embracing, his hurried steps came to a halt.
