Chapter 61
Matthew said, "I need to go out for a bit."
Sophie had a feeling. She didn't ask, just nodded.
Then, before Matthew left, he went to the bathroom first.
When the door closed, she heard the front door close too.
Sophie couldn't help but sigh.
Even though he said such cold-hearted things, his actions still showed he cared.
Her armor was like foam. It would shatter at the slightest touch.
Bella had been in a car accident.
Last night's drama. That was her.
Sophie saw it on Bella's Facebook.
A photo posted at 4 AM. No face, no injuries shown, just a shot of a typical hospital room layout. Most importantly, in the corner of the photo, a pair of men's legs were visible.
Bella: [He's just being stubborn.]
Just a few short words, showing off her victory.
Sophie took several deep breaths. Matthew really knew how to slap her in the face.
Whatever. The young couple was just playing around. Her, an outsider getting involved, was just adding some entertainment to their relationship.
Kind of stupid.
"Sophie, the supervisor wants you," a colleague called out.
Sophie exited Facebook and went to the supervisor's office.
The supervisor assigned her a business trip, about a week.
Sophie agreed.
Time was tight, the task was heavy. Sophie immediately went home to pack, grabbed her suitcase and headed out to catch a cab to the airport.
She just sent Emily a message saying she had to go on a business trip and couldn't meet up for now.
Emily replied: [Okay, can't help it when work calls.]
Sophie smiled.
After a two-hour flight, Sophie got off the plane and waited at the exit.
The supervisor said someone would pick her up here.
Someone from the partner company, to complete this project together.
A black car stopped in front of her. The window rolled down and a man leaned over. "Are you Sophie?"
"I am." Sophie nodded.
"Get in." The man wasn't being gentlemanly. He didn't get out of the car.
Sophie asked, "Who are you?"
He probably didn't expect her to ask that.
The other person was a bit impatient but still answered, "Eric Davis from OG Company."
Only after hearing this did Sophie drag her suitcase to the back of his car. The trunk opened and she put her case inside.
After the trunk automatically closed, she walked to the passenger side.
Just as she opened the car door, Eric said, "Sorry, the passenger seat is for my girlfriend."
Sophie backed out, closed the door, and got in the back seat.
The car drove steadily along the unfamiliar road. Sophie sent a message to her supervisor saying she was in the car.
"I'll drop you at the company first. I have a date later, so you'll have to take a cab to the hotel yourself. Remember the route. I won't be picking you up tomorrow."
"Okay." Sophie didn't think anything was wrong with that.
Having someone pick her up in the first place was already a bit much.
The supervisor sent a message asking who picked her up.
Sophie replied.
The supervisor sent a surprised emoji.
Sophie sent back a question mark.
Supervisor: [Rich kid experiencing real life. I heard his temper isn't great. Be careful, don't provoke him.]
Sophie had a vague sense of that.
She replied: [Thanks for the heads up.]
Putting away her phone, she looked at the scenery on both sides. Different from Silverlight City, the weather here was a bit cooler.
Eric's phone rang.
He held the phone to his ear, driving with one hand.
"Baby... the company sent me to pick someone up. I'll come find you as soon as I drop them at the office... might be a bit late, wait for me... I know, I'm sorry. Go shopping at the mall first. If you see something you like, have the salesgirl wrap it up and put it on my account... Good girl, see you soon."
Sophie kept her eyes on the road.
She didn't like it when people talked on the phone while driving. Always felt it was dangerous.
Fortunately, the call wasn't long.
Half an hour later, Eric stopped the car at the entrance of OG Company. He didn't get out either. "We're here."
"Thanks." Sophie got out, took her suitcase from the trunk.
Before the trunk was fully closed, he'd already hit the gas and driven off.
Sophie gave a light snort and entered the OG Company building herself.
The receptionist received her and took her to the relevant department.
After meeting the department head, it was time to get off work.
They originally wanted to take her to dinner, but Sophie declined, saying they could eat after the project was finished.
They were just being polite anyway, so they didn't insist when she refused.
Sophie took a cab back to the hotel. This business trip wasn't feeling great so far.
She took a shower and sat on the sofa reviewing the work content for this trip. Better to get organized than be criticized.
Her phone suddenly lit up.
Seeing the incoming call, Sophie almost forgot Matthew existed.
Was he home?
Sophie waited until he called a second time before answering.
"Where are you?" Matthew asked.
"On a business trip." Sophie's finger scrolled on the touchscreen. "What's up?"
"Why didn't you say anything?"
Sophie's finger paused.
She sat up straight, a mocking smile on her lips. "Aren't you pretty busy? Didn't want to disturb you."
Silence on the other end for a few seconds.
"When are you coming back?"
"Don't know yet." Sophie thought he might explain, but just like before, he said nothing.
So she didn't want to let him know her schedule either.
Maybe he didn't want to know anyway, just asking out of formality.
"Got it."
Sophie's finger started moving again. "Anything else?"
"No."
"Hanging up then."
This time, Sophie hung up first.
She didn't love him, no need to be all wishy-washy about it.
Work made her forget about Matthew. When she got busy, she even forgot to eat lunch and dinner.
She ordered takeout and ate while working.
She didn't finish the work until before midnight.
Stretching, she lay on the bed. After looking at the computer all day, she didn't want to touch her phone either.
Probably too tired, she fell asleep not long after lying down.
The next day, the alarm woke her up.
She got up, washed up, changed clothes and rushed to OG Company. Not far from the company, she bought a piece of bread.
Walking to the company entrance, she saw Eric's car drive past from the side, a very clean parallel park.
He got out of the car, and as he locked the door and turned around, he saw Sophie.
When he passed by Sophie, he didn't even say hello.
During the meeting with OG, Sophie saw Eric slouched in his chair, playing with his phone, completely disregarding the leadership.
Sitting across from her now, she realized he looked kind of young.
After the OG person in charge finished speaking, he asked Sophie for her thoughts.
Sophie shared her ideas. She spoke confidently and eloquently, radiating light in every gesture.
She was already beautiful, and being so composed at work added even more points.
Only then did Eric put his attention on her.
She wore a white shirt and straight black suit pants, very ordinary clothes, but somehow she made them look seductive.
She had a great figure, curvy and shapely. Her hair was tied up, revealing a delicate and stunning face. Her eyes tilted upward at the corners, creating an indescribable allure.
Her red lips opened and closed, her voice not that bland sweet kind, but with a sexiness that struck straight at the heart.
Even when saying boring work jargon, it sounded pleasant.
Eric secretly took a photo of Sophie with his phone. He sent it directly to their group chat of rich and powerful young men from all over the country.
As soon as the picture was sent, messages started dinging non-stop.
