Chapter 58
Sophie stared at the message, thinking Matthew really needed to be taught a lesson.
Why did he have to provoke her!
Couldn't he just finish eating and leave?
She had already pretended not to see him, but he still had to come over and make his presence known.
Sophie ignored him.
Emily said softly, "He's coming over."
Sophie frowned.
"Hello." Matthew was greeting Emily.
Emily nodded out of politeness.
Matthew stood beside Sophie, looking down at her.
Sophie didn't even lift her head.
"I'll pick you up after work." Matthew said to Sophie.
Sophie acted as if she hadn't heard.
Matthew patiently tapped her shoulder lightly.
"Can I help you?" Sophie asked politely.
Matthew knew she must be upset. He repeated, "I'll pick you up after work."
"No need," Sophie said. "Don't trouble yourself."
"I'll pay the bill in a bit." Matthew didn't continue that topic.
"No need, I can afford it."
Matthew bent down slightly and said softly near her ear, "We'll talk tonight when we get home."
His voice brushed past her ear like a feather, sending tingles spreading outward from her ear.
She wasn't used to him being like this, and couldn't help but lean away. "Bella is waiting for you."
Matthew frowned slightly, seeing distance in her eyes.
He didn't push it and left.
As soon as he left, Sophie picked up her water glass and gulped it down.
Emily couldn't help but laugh. "I really can't figure out what's going on between you two anymore. Just looking at him like this, he doesn't seem that bad. But then again, he is."
Sophie took a deep breath and touched her ear that still carried his scent. "What more does it take to be a jerk?"
"I mean, if he's a jerk, why does he come over and talk to you so openly? But if he's not a jerk, why is he having a meal with his ex-girlfriend over there? What's he even trying to do?"
"Who knows."
Matthew and Bella left first.
When Sophie and Emily went to pay after eating, they were told it had already been paid.
"Who needs that." Sophie rolled her eyes.
Emily walked with her arm linked. "Let him pay. He feels guilty, so you should accept it without any qualms."
"Who needs his money."
"Right, we don't." Emily put her hand on her shoulder as they entered the elevator. "So tonight when you get home, give him a good piece of your mind."
Sophie pursed her lips. "Not worth it."
Emily smiled. "I have a feeling you two really won't be able to get divorced."
"If we don't divorce, how will he explain it to his ex-girlfriend?" Sophie snorted lightly. "Right now, as soon as his ex-girlfriend calls, he immediately goes to her."
"If he wanted a divorce, he wouldn't drag it out. Wouldn't getting divorced directly be better for explaining to her?" Emily analyzed. "Maybe he really has no feelings for that woman anymore."
Sophie said, "Anyway, staying unclear with an ex after breaking up is being a jerk. And also, he and I won't last long. Because neither of us has feelings for the other."
Emily smiled without saying anything.
"Don't smile like that. It's creepy."
"Feelings are something that develop gradually. Maybe they're just not that strong yet."
Walking out of the elevator, Sophie suddenly smiled.
A rather bland smile.
"If he really cared about me, even if he left with Bella just now, he should at least be waiting here for me." Sophie raised her eyebrows. "At the end of the day, he just really has no feelings for me."
Emily was momentarily speechless.
That seemed to make sense too.
Back at the company, the receptionist gave her a delivery package.
Sophie opened it at her desk and realized she had bought this thing when she saw what was inside.
It was the pair of rings she had bought the day before yesterday.
She had originally planned to take a photo and post it on Facebook to compete with Bella, but thinking about it now, it was really childish.
Matthew had already had a meal with Bella, so these things probably looked like a joke to others.
Bella was probably secretly laughing at her.
She threw the rings into her drawer and started working.
Half an hour before the end of work, Matthew called.
Sophie didn't answer.
He sent another message.
Matthew: [Waiting for you downstairs.]
Sophie had no backbone. Just seeing these few words made her heart restless.
With that face and body of his, and imagining how appealing it would sound coming from his mouth, it was hard for her not to be moved.
Sophie was a bit anxious during the last half hour.
When it was time to get off work, Sophie packed up her things and took her bag.
Before leaving, she took out the two rings from the drawer and put them in her bag.
She didn't immediately leave the company after getting out of the elevator. After a few minutes, she walked out.
Across from the company entrance, in a parking spot on the street, she immediately spotted Matthew's car.
As she hesitated whether to walk over, Matthew got out of the car.
He was wearing a white shirt and black dress pants. When he got out, the visual impact was comparable to an international male model.
After several months of taking care of his health, he no longer looked as thin and frail as before. His skin was still fair, but very healthy. His features were already impeccable, and now they were even more defined.
His deep eyes crossed the street, locking directly onto Sophie, and he walked toward her.
Clearly, he had been watching her side from the car, otherwise how could he have gotten out at the first moment.
Sophie admitted that just these few steps he took toward her were like stepping on her heart—the closer he got, the faster her heart beat.
He had the charm to make people fall for him effortlessly.
A terrible thought flashed through her mind.
For a man like this, being a playboy was normal.
Sophie was going crazy.
"Eat at home or eat out?" Matthew asked her.
Sophie pushed away that confused thought from her mind and asked back, "Are you sure you don't have plans tonight?"
Matthew knew what she was talking about.
"I'm sure."
Sophie started walking. "Matthew, you really don't need to humor me."
Matthew followed beside her without saying anything.
Seeing this, Sophie realized she had been presumptuous after all.
How could someone like him humor her?
Coming to pick her up after work today was probably just because Bella didn't have plans with him and he had nothing better to do?
Suddenly, her wrist tightened and her body was pulled back.
"Don't you watch where you're going?" Matthew pulled her into his arms, his tone somewhat harsh.
Sophie snapped back to reality. She had almost been hit by a car just now.
She wasn't scared by almost being hit by a car, but rather by Matthew's shout.
Seeing his gloomy expression, Sophie yelled back at him for no reason, "What are you yelling for?"
Matthew's eyes narrowed slightly, completely not expecting her to be so unreasonable.
Sophie had been holding it in all day, and now being yelled at by him like this, she couldn't help but want to be difficult. "Who asked you to pull me? Even if I got hit and died, it wouldn't be your business."
Matthew's frown deepened, his eyes dark. "Say that again."
