Chapter 157
Both Emily and Sophie were in a bad mood.
That whole night, everyone in the house couldn't sleep.
"They say parents love their children most, so why can't I feel it at all? It's supposed to be the warmest place, so why does it feel suffocating?" Emily lay flat on her bed, calmly expressing the doubts in her heart.
Sophie turned her head to look at her. The moonlight outside filtered through the curtains, and she could faintly see tears glistening in the corners of Emily's eyes.
"They just don't know how to love you the right way." Sophie turned on her side, resting her head on her hand. "People from their generation don't know how to love. They just use what they think is right to control the next generation."
Emily understood. She should be understanding, but she just couldn't accept it.
"I'm going back to Silverlight City tomorrow." Emily also turned her head to look at Sophie. "I'm sorry. I said I wanted you to stay here and have fun for a few more days."
"There's nothing to be sorry about." Sophie didn't mind. "I'm planning to go back to my grandma's house tomorrow to visit."
Emily was surprised. "By yourself?"
"Yeah."
"How about I go with you? I still have vacation time left anyway."
"No need. You haven't had a proper rest in a long time either. Go back and just relax." Sophie didn't want Emily to run around with her. She was already tired, so if she had vacation time, she should rest properly.
"But you need someone with you too." Emily thought for a moment. "Matthew tracked you down here, so he'll probably go back with you."
Sophie hadn't thought about that.
"Since he came all this way to find you, you should ask him what he means by ignoring you for so long. Sometimes you need to ask what needs to be asked. The most important thing between husband and wife is honesty. If he can't give you a reasonable explanation..."
Emily paused here and suddenly laughed. "On one hand, I want to tell you to work things out with Matthew. On the other hand, seeing you hurt makes me want to tell you to just divorce him. How can a person's thoughts be so inconsistent?"
Sophie understood what Emily meant. "When he treats me well, I want to make it work with him too. When he ignores me, I also feel like this marriage is pointless."
Emily sighed. "If marriage is so hard to last a lifetime, why do so many people still need it? Getting married is just something you do in the heat of the moment, right?"
"Acting on impulse." Sophie also let out a long sigh. "I did it to repay a debt of gratitude."
Emily looked at her. "Does he know?"
Sophie answered, "Probably not."
Emily said, "In this day and age, only you would still think about repaying debts of gratitude."
Sophie smiled. "You know very well I had my own motives mixed in with that gratitude. I just didn't achieve my goal."
Emily pulled up the blanket and closed her eyes. "Whatever. If you think you can make it work, then work it out. If not, then don't. Except for life and death, nothing else is that big of a deal."
Emily packed her things early in the morning, and Sophie also got her suitcase ready.
When they came downstairs, Joshua turned around and saw them, then went forward to help with their things.
Nola looked at Emily, wanting to say something but holding back.
Emily didn't even eat breakfast.
"Carson, Nola, thank you for having us these past few days." Before leaving, Sophie made a point to say goodbye to them.
Nola glanced at Emily standing outside in the yard. She held Sophie's hand. "Sophie, you and Emily are good friends. Please talk to her more and tell her to think about what's good for herself."
"I will." Sophie smiled at Emily. "Don't worry, Emily will definitely be fine in the future."
Nola let out a deep sigh.
Sophie didn't want to ride in the same car as Matthew, but Joshua had already put her suitcase in the trunk.
Emily had originally planned to take the train back, just like Sophie, but her suitcase was already in their car too.
"Could you please take me to the station?" With Matthew there, Emily wouldn't feel comfortable in the car.
Joshua glanced at Matthew.
Matthew looked at Sophie.
Sophie said, "I'm going to the station too."
"Where are you going?" Matthew asked.
"Back to my hometown." Sophie didn't hide it.
Hearing this, Matthew told Joshua to go to the station first.
The whole way, none of the four people spoke.
When they arrived at the station, Sophie got out of the car, and Matthew got out too.
He took Sophie's suitcase from the trunk and said to Joshua, "You take Emily back to Silverlight City."
Emily looked at Sophie, then at Matthew.
"Okay." Joshua didn't ask questions and just nodded in agreement.
Sophie went to take her suitcase, but Matthew held onto it.
With one hand on the handle and the other holding Sophie's hand, he walked into the station.
Emily stood there stunned. She looked at Joshua.
Joshua said, "Let's go."
Emily frowned. Seeing Sophie being pulled by Matthew into the crowd, she could only send Sophie a message.
Emily: [Is he going with you?]
At that moment, Sophie was being pulled by Matthew to the ticket counter.
"What are you doing?" Sophie saw him take out his phone, tap it a few times, hand it to the staff, and then collect tickets.
Sophie had no idea when her ID information had gotten into his phone.
"Going with you." Matthew held her hand without letting go. After getting the tickets, he led her to the ticket gate.
The earliest train, business class seats.
The whole time, Matthew never let go of Sophie's hand.
Sophie didn't struggle either. With so many people around, making a scene wouldn't look good.
After getting on the train, Matthew finally let go of her hand. He put the suitcase on the rack and sat down next to her.
Sophie pressed her lips together and glanced at him. He looked back, their eyes meeting.
"I didn't sleep well last night. I'm going to catch up on some sleep first." After Matthew finished speaking, he closed his eyes.
Sophie had noticed the fatigue on his face yesterday. Right now, she had no desire to talk to him anyway, so she just let him be.
She replied to Emily's message. [Yeah.]
Emily: [What is he trying to do?]
Sophie: [No idea.]
Emily: [Then interrogate him properly.]
Sophie smiled a little.
Putting down her phone, interrogate him?
She turned her head to glance at Matthew. He had really fallen asleep.
Sometimes she couldn't figure out what Matthew's feelings for her really were.
Toward her, was it just physical attachment?
The train started moving. Sophie looked out the window and also closed her eyes.
She didn't fall asleep. Halfway through, Matthew covered her with a blanket.
Three hours later, the announcement came that they were arriving at the station.
Only then did Sophie open her eyes.
Matthew had already gotten the suitcase down and was looking at her.
Sophie stood up. Matthew reached for her hand again, but she dodged.
She didn't look at Matthew and walked past him.
Having followed her all the way here, she couldn't shake him off.
After getting off the train and walking out of the station, Sophie took out her phone to call a car.
Matthew had never been to this place and didn't know where her grandma's house was.
A car stopped in front of them. The driver opened the trunk, and Matthew put the luggage in.
Actually, when he closed the trunk, Sophie really wanted to tell the driver to leave quickly and not let Matthew get in the car.
In that moment of hesitation, Matthew had already opened the car door and gotten in.
The car drove from the city to the village. The scenery along the road flashed by. Sophie pointed out a spot and told the driver to stop there.
The road to her grandma's house required walking a small path. Matthew carried the suitcase, following behind her.
